You & Them

The Sagittarius parent

Jupiter gives you an expansive, honest, slightly chaotic house with the door open and the car keys by the bowl. Your children see more of the world than most. What some of them need from you is the small, dull, repeated thing.

The parent you already are

Your children have seen things.

Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and in your house that means the world is treated as accessible: the long walk, the unfamiliar food, the trip that other families would have decided was too much trouble with small children. Your children grow up assuming they are allowed to go places, which is a considerable inheritance.

You also answer honestly. Where do people go when they die. Why is that man asleep in the street. Is it real. You do not deflect, you do not lie to make it comfortable, and you say when you do not know. Every child in this list is better off for that, and the water children, who can tell when they are being managed, are better off most of all.

The hour that tests you

It is the small repeated thing.

The same bedtime, the same order, the same cup, the promise kept exactly, the week written down. None of it interests you, and several signs in this list are built entirely out of it. Taurus needs the fixed points. Virgo needs the plan. Capricorn needs to know who is in charge. Cancer needs the goodbye to be the same goodbye.

The second thing is your mouth. You say the accurate thing at the moment it occurs to you, and it is never unkind in intention. A Cancer, Libra or Pisces child will carry it for days and never mention it, and you will have no idea it happened.

What to do with that

Promise smaller and deliver exactly. The outing you mentioned and did not take is remembered far longer than the outing you never mentioned.

Build three fixed points into the week and treat them as immovable, even when something more interesting comes up. You do not need a rigid house. You need enough structure that the children who require it are not constantly bracing.

And check the landing of what you said, particularly with the quiet ones. A short private sentence, later, asking whether what you said this morning came out wrong, will teach them more about repair than a hundred general reassurances.

What you carry into the room

What you give without trying

  • A big world. You take them places, show them things and assume they can cope, and mostly they can.
  • Straight answers, including to the enormous questions most adults deflect.
  • Optimism that is not performed. Your children believe things generally turn out, because they watched you believe it.

Where you catch

  • Bluntness that lands harder on some signs than you would ever intend.
  • Promises made warmly in the moment and forgotten by Thursday.
  • Restlessness. The routine some of these children need bores you, and they can feel the boredom.

You, with each of the twelve

Twelve children, twelve different weathers between you. Find yours, and then read them in full.

  • Fire and fire, and the pair with the highest mileage. You are both out of the door first and you make each other braver. Keep the promised outings literal, decide rather than debate when they push, and burn the energy early so the evening has somewhere to land.

    Read the Aries child

  • They want the same route, the same cup and the same evening, and you were thinking of going somewhere. This child is not dull; they are rooted. Hold their fixed points exactly, give the warning in something they can watch, and go out with them slowly rather than quickly.

    Read the Taurus child

  • Your opposite sign, and a fast, funny, extremely talkative house. They collect the details you skip and ask the question you were avoiding. Both of you say the true thing at the wrong moment, so be the one who models the apology afterwards.

    Read the Gemini child

  • Your honesty is weather to them. A blunt remark at breakfast is still being carried at bedtime, and they will not tell you. Soften the delivery without softening the truth, keep leaving rituals identical, and do not spring a change of plan on this child.

    Read the Cancer child

  • Generous, loud and full of plans. You will both promise the moon and mean it entirely. Deliver a smaller thing reliably rather than a bigger thing vaguely, watch their performance properly, and keep the corrections out of company.

    Read the Leo child

  • They want the detail and you gave them the gist. Your improvised plans make this child anxious, not annoyed. Write the week down where they can see it, keep the small promises exactly, and take their worries seriously for a short, definite moment.

    Read the Virgo child

  • They soften your bluntness and you give them the courage to say what they want. A good pairing. Watch how fast they agree with you: ask what they would choose if nobody minded, and make the unpopular decision yourself.

    Read the Libra child

  • They are private and you are wide open, and neither setting is wrong. Announcing their business to the room costs you real trust here. Keep their confidences absolutely, tell them uncomfortable truths plainly, and give them the door they can close.

    Read the Scorpio child

  • Two arrows, one household, and remarkably little furniture left intact. You will have a wonderful time and nothing will be tidied. Be the one who builds in the boring structure, because neither of you will otherwise, and they still need it.

    Read the Sagittarius child

  • They want the plan, the schedule and the person in charge, and you were going to see how the day went. Say what happens next and then do exactly that. Give them a real responsibility, and tell them out loud that the adults are handling the big things.

    Read the Capricorn child

  • Fire and air, and a house full of ideas nobody else would have had. They will argue the principle and you will enjoy it. Give reasons rather than rules, let the strange interest run, and do not confuse their coolness with disinterest.

    Read the Aquarius child

  • Your volume, pace and honesty all arrive at once in a child with no filter. A big day out becomes tears at bedtime about a sock. Shorten the day, lower the lights early, and let them stay inside the game for ten minutes longer than feels necessary.
