The Twelve
The Pisces baby
Pisces children pick up whatever is in the air and carry it about as if it were theirs. They are tender, funny and elsewhere, and getting them into a coat can take a quarter of an hour.

In the first year
Jupiter opens Pisces and Neptune dissolves its edges, and a Pisces baby arrives with almost no border between themselves and the room. Sensitive is the word people use. Here is what it actually looks like.
They are frequently unsettled by things nobody else in the room noticed: a change of voice, a visitor’s mood, the general level of noise. A Pisces baby can be fine for two hours in a busy place and then entirely undone with no fresh cause, because the busyness has been accumulating the whole time.
They tend to be dreamy feeders, drifting off mid-feed, easily distracted, and they often love water from the start. The bath works when nothing else does, reliably enough to be a genuine tool.
Sleep can be unpredictable in the first year, with an odd quality of being hard to bring down after a lively day, and many parents of Pisces babies work out sooner or later that the fix belongs earlier in the afternoon rather than at bedtime.
The toddler years
This is when the imagination arrives properly, and it is not a small thing.
A Pisces toddler will play elaborately, at length, inside a scenario nobody else can see. They will be a cat for a fortnight. They will have a conversation with a chair. Interrupting it feels harmless and is, to them, being yanked out of somewhere real, which is why the transition tantrums in this sign so often come from the leaving of a game rather than from the game itself.
The other feature is porousness. A Pisces toddler in a room where somebody is crying may start crying. They mirror distress without meaning to and without much defence against it, and a parent having a hard day will frequently find themselves with an inexplicably difficult child.
Their own upset tends to be flooding rather than explosive: tears that arrive completely and take a while to drain away, and that do not respond to being reasoned with while they are happening.
Starting school
School asks Pisces children to do the thing they find hardest, which is to be in a loud room all day and keep track of what is required.
They are usually kind, well liked, and slightly adrift. Reports mention daydreaming. They may lose things with real consistency, arrive at the wrong place, or have missed the instruction while attending to something more interesting outside the window.
Their strengths are in anything imaginative, anything with a story, and anything that rewards noticing how other people feel, which they do better than almost any of the twelve. Pisces children are frequently the ones who go and sit with someone who is upset without being asked.
The thing to watch is that they take on other children’s states at school and bring them home. A flat Friday afternoon is often somebody else’s week arriving second hand.
If you are their parent
You are the filter this child does not yet have, and most of the work is managing the input rather than the child.
The practical version is unglamorous: shorter days out, earlier quiet, less scheduled at weekends than other families manage, and a consistent low volume at home. It feels like doing less. It produces a noticeably happier child.
Be concrete where they are vague. This sign benefits enormously from an adult who supplies structure without resenting the dreaminess: the visible list, the same place for the shoes, the countdown before the end of the game. Structure and imagination are not opposites here, and the child with both does considerably better than the child with only the second.
And listen to what they tell you about other people. Pisces children are frequently right about a room, a mood, a person who is not quite all right, long before anyone else has noticed, and it is a very good thing to have in a family.
The two levers
Most evenings with a Pisces child come down to these. One list is what brings them back to you, the other is what sends them off.
What settles them
- Lower volume and lower light, sooner than you think is necessary.
- Water: the bath, the sink, the puddle, anything they can put their hands in.
- A story, told rather than read, with them inside it.
What sets them off
- A long busy day with no quiet in the middle of it.
- Being hurried out of something they were deep inside.
- Somebody else being upset nearby, particularly somebody they love.
Three small things to try this week
-
Leave earlier and narrate the leaving
This child is not being defiant at the front door, they are still somewhere else and have to come back first. Ten extra minutes and a running commentary, shoes now, then coat, then door, brings them into the room far more reliably than raising your voice, which mostly startles them into being upset as well as late.
-
Build a quiet hour into a busy day
Pisces children absorb everything around them and have no filter for volume, for crowds, or for the mood of whoever is nearby. A birthday party, a supermarket and a swimming lesson in one day will produce a meltdown in the evening that looks unrelated to any of them. Half an hour of nothing, deliberately scheduled, prevents most of it.
-
Take the invisible things seriously
The imaginary friend, the dream that upset them, the story they are certain happened. Rather than correcting the boundary between real and not real, ask about it. It develops on its own in time, and a child whose inner life is treated as interesting rather than as a mistake keeps telling you about it, which is worth having.

Are you a Pisces as well?
A child is only half of the weather in a house. Read the Pisces parent for what you bring into the room, and for the reading of you with a child of every one of the twelve.
Is Pisces their Moon?
The Moon sign often shows more plainly than the Sun in the first years. If Pisces is where your child's Moon sits, read the Pisces Moon for the need underneath, the night and the comfort that lands.
