The Gemini baby

In the first year

Mercury is quick, and it is quick in them from the first week. A Gemini baby watches, and then, almost at once, begins to answer.

In the early weeks they are often the ones scanning the room over your shoulder, more interested in the light fitting than in feeding, breaking off to look at something and then coming back. Parents sometimes worry about this. It is usually just appetite of a different kind.

The noise starts early. Cooing, then babbling of remarkable range and length, conversations held with a curtain, a mobile, their own hands. Many Gemini babies are described as chatty before anyone could reasonably call it speech, and the babble genuinely has the shape of talk: pauses for a reply, changes of tone, apparent punchlines.

They also change mood faster than seems fair. Delighted to furious to delighted inside ninety seconds, with no obvious cause and no apparent memory of the middle bit. This is the first appearance of the twins, and it does not go away. It stops being alarming once you stop trying to find the reason.

The toddler years

This is when the questions arrive, and they arrive in volume.

A Gemini toddler asks why about things that have no why. They ask the same question in four different forms to see whether the answer changes. They interrupt their own question with a better one. Answering properly is worth doing, even when the honest answer is that nobody knows, because what they are learning is that the world is explicable and that you are willing to explain it.

Attention is the defining feature of the stretch. People call it short. It is not short, it is wide. A Gemini toddler will move through six things in twenty minutes and retain something from each, and the parent who keeps steering them back to the first thing is the one who ends up frustrated.

Expect early and inventive language, an ear for anything said in the next room, and a gift for repeating it at the worst possible moment.

Starting school

School tends to suit Gemini children enormously, at least socially.

They talk to everyone. They move between groups rather than settling in one. They are frequently the child who knows what is happening across the whole class, and who tells you about four different friendships on the way home, none of which they seem to rank.

Academically the picture is uneven in a particular way: fast to grasp, slow to finish. A Gemini child usually understands the task before the explanation is over and then loses interest in demonstrating it. Reports mention potential, distraction and talking, in some order, for about a decade.

What helps is variety inside the work rather than pressure on top of it, and an adult who notices that boredom and difficulty look identical from the outside in this child but need opposite responses.

If you are their parent

You will have the best conversations of your life and you will be extremely tired.

The main thing to understand is that a Gemini child’s restlessness is not dissatisfaction. They are not unhappy with the game, the room or you. They are built to move and to sample, and a day that offers some variety is a day this child comes home from happy. A day of one long uninterrupted activity, however lovely, is a day of low grade struggle.

Do not read the two moods as instability. This sign holds contradictory feelings comfortably, in a way that unnerves the adults around them far more than it unnerves the child. They can be genuinely devastated and genuinely fine, ten minutes apart, and both were real.

And be prepared to be quoted. Gemini children repeat things with terrible accuracy, and the sentence they choose will not be the one you would have picked.

The two levers

Most evenings with a Gemini child come down to these. One list is what brings them back to you, the other is what sends them off.

What settles them

• Being talked to, properly, in full sentences, about whatever is actually happening.
• A change of room, a change of window, a change of anything. Novelty does the work that stillness does for other children.
• Having the day emptied out loud at bedtime, so the running commentary has somewhere to go.

What sets them off

• Being left with nothing new to look at for longer than they can bear.
• Having a question ignored, or answered with a noise instead of an answer.
• The same activity extended past the moment they were finished with it.

Three small things to try this week

1. Narrate everything, even the boring parts

   Gemini babies are soothed by language the way other babies are soothed by rocking, and it starts long before they can understand a word. Say what you are doing while you do it. Describe the shopping, the weather, the reason the car has stopped. This is not enrichment for its own sake; for this particular child it is genuinely calming.

2. Offer two things, not one thing for longer

   When attention runs out at minute four, the instinct is to encourage them back to the puzzle. It rarely works. Two shorter activities with a switch in the middle will hold a Gemini child longer in total than one activity with an argument in the middle, and it teaches nothing worse than that variety exists.

3. Empty the head before the lights go out

   The Gemini bedtime problem is almost never a tired body. It is a mind still running the day. Five minutes of deliberate talking, what happened, what was funny, what is on tomorrow, does more than an hour of shushing, because the thoughts are looking for an exit and you have just provided one.
