The Twelve
The Aries baby
Aries is the first sign, and it shows. This is the child who decides before they can walk, collides with the world at speed, and forgives it completely about ninety seconds later.

In the first year
Mars arrives with them, and Mars does not wait. An Aries baby lives in verbs: they kick, they arch, they push off, they lunge for the spoon. Long before they can sit up unaided they are trying to, hauling themselves forward against your hand with the expression of someone who has already decided.
The defining thing is not energy, exactly. Plenty of babies are busy. It is the direction of it: outward, and now. An Aries baby who has noticed something wants it in their hands immediately, and the gap between noticing and holding is where most of the early crying lives. They are not frustrated with you. They are frustrated with the distance.
What surprises new parents most is the recovery. A furious Aries baby can go from red-faced and rigid to genuinely delighted inside a minute, with no residue at all. There is rarely a sulk. Whatever it was, it is over, and the next thing has already started.
The toddler years
This is the sign’s loudest chapter, and it helps to know what you are actually watching.
A toddler is a person with enormous wanting and almost no ability, and every child meets that gap. The Aries version meets it at full speed. They will attempt the stairs, the climb, the jump, the pouring of their own drink, and they will attempt it before anyone has offered. When it goes wrong, the noise is immediate and total.
Two things make this stretch easier. The first is that Aries anger is usually about being stopped rather than about the thing itself, so an alternative that still involves going is worth more than a comfort that involves sitting. The second is that these children do not hold on to it. If you can stay unbothered during the eruption, you get the whole child back almost at once, and nothing needs to be repaired.
They also start using the word “self” very early, and they mean it with force. “Self do it” is not a preference. It is close to an identity.
Starting school
Aries children tend to be liked, and they tend to be in trouble, often in the same week.
They answer before the question has finished. They volunteer for everything. They are first into the water, first up the frame, first to say the thing nobody else was going to say. Teachers usually notice a generosity underneath it: an Aries child who has knocked someone over is generally the one who goes back for them.
The real difficulty at this age is repetition. A task they have already understood becomes physically uncomfortable to keep doing, and what looks like defiance is often boredom with nowhere to go. Competition solves more of this than praise does, especially competition against their own previous attempt.
Losing is still hard. Not because they are poor sports by nature, but because they commit completely to the version of events where they win, and reality has to overwrite it in public.
If you are their parent
You will be tired, and you will laugh a lot.
The most useful adjustment most parents make is to stop treating speed as a problem to be slowed down and start treating it as a current to be pointed somewhere. An Aries child who has run before breakfast is a different person at the table. One who has been kept still since waking will find something to collide with by ten.
Be decisive, even when you are unsure. This child reads hesitation as an opening, and then you are negotiating, and negotiating is where the afternoon goes. A firm, slightly boring adult is not a killjoy to an Aries child. It is a wall worth running at, which is a compliment, and it is also the thing that lets them stop.
And do not take the fury personally. It is weather. It arrives, it is genuinely enormous, and then it has gone somewhere else entirely, usually into a game involving a cardboard box.
The two levers
Most evenings with a Aries child come down to these. One list is what brings them back to you, the other is what sends them off.
What settles them
- Movement before conversation: a bounce, a lap walk, anything that lets the body finish the thing it started.
- A decision from you that arrives fast and does not wobble, so there is nothing left to push against.
- Being given the first go, even when the go is tiny and the thing is boring.
What sets them off
- Being held still at the exact moment they have decided to move.
- A long reasonable explanation when they wanted a yes or a no.
- Losing at something they had already decided they had won.
Three small things to try this week
-
Give them the first turn
Not the biggest turn, the first one. Aries children are far less interested in the size of a share than in the order of it. Let them press the lift button, open the door, take the first bite, and a surprising number of arguments never begin.
-
Race the transition, do not announce it
Where another child needs five minutes of warning before leaving the park, this one usually needs a starting pistol. Try "coat, shoes, door, go" as a sprint they can win rather than a change they have to accept, and keep the gap between the count and the going as short as you can manage.
-
End it rather than debate it
An Aries child will out-argue you cheerfully for as long as you are willing to stay in the ring, and both of you will be more upset at the end than at the start. Decide, say it once in six words, and then be boring. The storm that follows is usually shorter than the negotiation would have been.
Read next, with Aries in mind
Are you a Aries as well?
A child is only half of the weather in a house. Read the Aries parent for what you bring into the room, and for the reading of you with a child of every one of the twelve.
Is Aries their Moon?
The Moon sign often shows more plainly than the Sun in the first years. If Aries is where your child's Moon sits, read the Aries Moon for the need underneath, the night and the comfort that lands.
