Sun, Moon and rising, for people holding a baby

Somebody has told you your child is a Leo with a Pisces Moon and Virgo rising, and you would quite like to know what that sentence is doing. Here is the whole thing, without the jargon.

ONE DAY, MIDNIGHT TO MIDNIGHT Sun The same sign all day, and for about a month. A date is enough to find it. Moon A new sign every two and a half days, so it can turn over inside one birthday. Rising Twelve signs in one day, about two hours each. This is why a birth time matters.

Almost everything written about the zodiac for a general audience is about one thing: the Sun sign. It is the one you get from a date of birth, the one in the newspaper, the one people mean when they ask what you are.

It is also, in the older tradition, one of three things that get mentioned first about a chart, and the other two are frequently more useful when the person in question is eleven months old.

The three of them, quickly

The Sun sign is where the Sun was in the twelve slices of the zodiac at the moment of birth. It moves at a stately pace, spending about a month in each sign, which is why a date alone is enough to find it.

The Moon sign is where the Moon was at the same moment. The Moon is the fastest moving body in the traditional set, crossing a sign in a little over two days. A date alone is often not enough, because the Moon can change sign halfway through your child’s birthday.

The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is not a body at all. It is the slice of the zodiac that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. Because the earth turns once a day, this one changes roughly every two hours, and it needs a birth time and a birth place to be worked out at all.

So one of the three is free, and two of them cost you a look at the birth certificate.

What each one governs

The positions above are measured. What follows is what they mean, worked out and refined over centuries of reading people against their own charts, and it holds up.

The Sun is the central character. The drive, the thing a person is organised around, what they are becoming. In an adult this is usually the most visible of the three. In a baby it is arguably the least, because a person of nine months is not yet organised around anything except the next feed. Sun sign descriptions of small children are really descriptions of the temperament the child is growing into.

The Moon is need, comfort, habit and instinct. What settles a person, what they reach for without thinking, how they respond when they are not managing. This is the one that is loud in the first years, because a baby is almost entirely made of need and instinct. If you read one placement for a child under three, read this one, and all twelve are read in full in the twelve Moons.

The rising sign is the approach: the front of the house, the way a person meets a new room, the first impression they give and the manner they arrive in. It is why a chart reading sometimes explains a person other people describe completely differently from how they experience themselves.

Why the Moon is the useful one early

Think about what you actually need to know at half past four in the morning.

Not who this person will become. What settles them. Whether they want to be held tighter or put down, talked to or left in the quiet, walked around the room or kept perfectly still. That is the Moon’s territory in the tradition, and it is the practical question of the first two years.

It is also the placement most likely to explain the child who does not match their Sun sign description at all. A Capricorn baby with the Moon in Gemini will not look much like the serious old soul in the reading, at least not yet. The seriousness is in there, growing. The chatter is what you have got this year.

How to find the other two

You need three things: the date, the time of birth as precisely as you can get it, and the town.

The time is usually on the birth certificate or in the hospital notes. If you only have it to the nearest hour, that is still enough for the Moon most of the time and enough for the rising sign to be narrowed to one or two options.

Then put those three things into any birth chart calculator. There are many, they are mostly free, and you are looking for three lines in the output: the sign the Sun is in, the sign the Moon is in, and the ascendant. Ignore everything else on the first pass. The rest of a chart is genuinely interesting and it will still be there in a year.

We do not calculate charts on this site, and that is a deliberate choice rather than an omission. Doing it properly means handling a birth date, a birth time and a location for a named child, and that is not information we want to be collecting.

What to do with three signs instead of one

The mistake is to average them. People do this constantly, producing a sort of grey composite person who is a bit of everything and therefore a description of nobody.

They are three different registers of the same person, and read that way they are far more useful. Three separate sentences:

  • At the centre, they are becoming a Leo child. Read that one with the long view.
  • When they are tired, frightened or small, they want what a Pisces Moon wants. Read that one tonight.
  • When they walk into a room of strangers, they do it like a Virgo. Read that one at the party.

A child can quite easily be flamboyant at home, overwhelmed at volume, and careful with strangers. That is not a contradiction. That is most people.

If you only ever read one

Read the Sun for who they are becoming, and read the Moon for how to get through Tuesday.

And if the three of them together produce a picture that does not fit the actual child, trust the child. The chart is a description offered by a very old tradition. The person is in the next room, asleep on the wrong way round, and they are the primary source.

When you have the whole wheel in front of you, read a child’s birth chart one pass at a time. To focus on the child’s first way of meeting a new place, follow the rising sign in children.
