The Twelve Moons
The twelve Moons
The Sun sign tells you who a child is becoming. The Moon sign tells you what they need tonight: what settles them, what floods them and the particular comfort that gets through. In the first years, before the Sun has had time to grow into itself, the Moon is often the clearest thing in the chart.
Why the Moon, in the early years
In astrology the Moon governs need, nourishment, memory and the body's rhythms. It is the part of the chart that answers when a child is tired, frightened, hungry for closeness or simply overwhelmed. That is most of early childhood, which is why parents so often recognise their baby more readily in the Moon than in the Sun.
Reading the Moon does not replace the Sun. It sits underneath it. A bold Aries Sun with a tender Cancer Moon is one child, not two, and the readings below always end by placing the Moon beside a different Sun. For all three pillars together, see sun, moon and rising.
Finding your child's Moon sign
The Sun stays in a sign for about a month. The Moon is far quicker: it crosses a whole sign in a little over two days and goes round the full zodiac in under a month. So the birthday alone is not always enough.
- Gather three things The date of birth, the time as exactly as you have it, and the place.
- Use any chart calculator Most are free. We do not calculate charts here, because doing it properly means holding a named child's birth details.
- Read one line Look for the Moon in the list of placements. The sign beside it is the Moon sign. If the time is unknown and the Moon changed sign that day, read both Moons and watch which one your child answers to.
Four places the tradition marks
Classical astrology gives the Moon four special places. They describe how the Moon works in that sign, never how much a child feels.
Fire Moons
Feelings arrive fast and leave fast. The comfort that works lets them move.
- The Aries Moon Needs to move the feeling To act on a feeling the moment it arrives, and to find that the adult can meet that speed without trying to slow it down.
- The Leo Moon Needs to be seen warmly To be seen warmly by the people it loves, so that it knows it matters to them for exactly who it is.
- The Sagittarius Moon Needs room and a reason To have room to move and explore, and to understand why things are the way they are, so that limits feel like a map rather than a cage.
Earth Moons
Feelings settle through the body and the known. The comfort that works repeats.
- The Taurus Moon Needs the same, again To know that the familiar things will still be there: the same arms, the same order of the evening, the same soft place to land.
- The Virgo Moon Needs to know what comes next To know what comes next and to have things done properly, so that the world feels orderly enough for the heart to rest.
- The Capricorn Moon Needs something solid to lean on To lean on something solid and reliable, and to be allowed to stop being capable and simply be looked after.
Air Moons
Feelings are understood by being said. The comfort that works answers back.
- The Gemini Moon Needs to say it out loud To put a feeling into words and have someone answer back, so that it becomes something the mind can hold instead of a noise inside.
- The Libra Moon Needs the peace back To feel the peace between the people around it, and to know that fairness will be restored when something goes wrong.
- The Aquarius Moon Needs space to come back To have room to step back from a feeling and return to itself, and to be accepted as its own unusual self rather than squeezed into the usual shape.
Water Moons
Feelings run deep and take in the whole room. The comfort that works is a shore.
- The Cancer Moon Needs to be held close To be close to the people who make home, and to know that closeness will still be there after every separation and every storm.
- The Scorpio Moon Needs someone who stays To trust that the people it loves are completely honest and will stay, so that the deep feelings it guards can safely come up.
- The Pisces Moon Needs a soft place to dissolve To be met with gentleness, and to have a soft, safe place where all the feelings it has absorbed can settle and wash away.
The Moon at night
Night is the Moon's own time, and it is where a Moon sign shows most plainly. For what each element of Moon wants at four in the morning, read the Moon sign and the night waking. For the same twelve read by the Sun, open the twelve signs.
