The Twelve

The Sagittarius baby

Sagittarius children are cheerful, restless and alarmingly honest. They climb out of things designed to keep babies in, and they will tell your friend exactly what you said about her in the car.

In the first year

Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and a Sagittarius baby expands: outward, onward, and out of whatever you have just fastened them into.

Many of them are genuinely easy company: sociable, smiley with strangers, adaptable about routine in a way that makes other parents slightly resentful. They travel well. They are often fine in a noisy restaurant and fine at someone else’s house, and they sleep in the pram.

What they are not fine with is being restricted. The car seat, the highchair, the swaddle, the pram straps: this is the sign most likely to make an early, determined and surprisingly effective attempt to get out of things. Parents of Sagittarius babies often report physical milestones arriving with a bang rather than a progression, because the motivation was not developmental, it was escape.

Their crying tends to be loud, brief and instantly over once the situation changes.

The toddler years

The running starts and does not stop, and it is worth understanding what is driving it.

A Sagittarius toddler is not running away from you. They are running towards the next interesting thing, and they assume you are coming. This is why the standard advice about consequences works poorly and why the practical answer is usually environmental: more space, fewer places they cannot go, and accepting that this child will be at the far end of the park.

Language arrives with a distinctive flavour: declarative, funny, and entirely without filter. Sagittarius toddlers deliver observations about strangers at conversational volume. They are also surprisingly early to notice the big categories, alive and dead, real and pretend, fair and unfair, and to ask about them at bedtime.

Frustration is usually short lived and loud. Boredom is the real enemy, and confinement is its main cause.

Starting school

The classroom is a room, and rooms are the difficulty.

Sagittarius children are usually well liked at school, often funny, and frequently in mild trouble for talking, wandering or answering back with something perfectly true. They tend to be enthusiastic about anything new and quick to lose interest once the novelty has gone, which can read as capability that is not being applied.

They are generous and not remotely cliquey, moving between groups and genuinely not minding who they sit with. They can also be careless with other children’s feelings without meaning any harm at all, and they are usually mortified when it is explained.

What they respond to best is a reason. A Sagittarius child asked to do something because those are the rules will test the rule. Given the actual reason, they will usually cooperate and then argue about it later, cheerfully.

If you are their parent

You will lose them in a shop at least once, and it will not be because they were upset.

The most useful reframe is to stop treating the restlessness as behaviour and start treating it as a requirement. This child needs a certain quantity of space and movement per day, and if the day does not contain it, the evening will contain something worse instead. Parents who build the outing in rather than offering it as a reward have a much easier time.

Do not flatten the honesty. It is going to be socially awkward for about fifteen years and it is one of the best things about them. The work is timing and kindness, not suppression.

And take them places. Sagittarius children remember journeys, new streets, unfamiliar food, the odd building, the long walk. A childhood with a lot of going out in it suits this sign more than almost any other, and it costs nothing but shoes.

The two levers

Most evenings with a Sagittarius child come down to these. One list is what brings them back to you, the other is what sends them off.

What settles them

  • Being outside, in almost any weather, for longer than seems necessary.
  • A real answer to a big question, given seriously, even when the honest answer is that nobody knows.
  • Room to move: a space where the rule is not be careful.

What sets them off

  • Being confined for longer than they can bear, which is usually about half as long as the journey.
  • Being told off for saying a true thing at the wrong moment.
  • A promised outing that quietly turns into staying in.

Three small things to try this week

  1. Get out before you need to

An hour outside in the morning changes the entire shape of the day with this sign, and it is far more effective as prevention than as a rescue at four in the afternoon. Weather is largely irrelevant to a Sagittarius child. Being kept in is not.

  2. Treat the blunt thing as information

When they announce that the dinner is horrible or that Grandma is very old, there is usually no malice in it at all. Handle it in two parts: acknowledge the fact privately, teach the timing separately. Punishing the honesty tends to produce a child who lies rather than a child who is tactful.

  3. Answer the enormous questions properly

Where do people go when they die, why is that man asleep in the street, is God real. Sagittarius children ask these early and they are not being morbid. A short honest answer, including the part where you do not know, is worth a great deal more than a deflection, and they will come back to it with better questions for years.
