The Twelve
The Taurus baby
Taurus arrives without urgency and rarely acquires any. This is the child who wants the same blanket, the same route, the same song, and who will outlast you in any argument about it.

In the first year
Venus settles into a Taurus baby the way warmth settles into a room, and the first thing you meet is the calm. The second thing you meet is the will underneath it.
Taurus babies often are easy in the early months: solid, unbothered, content to be held and to watch. They tend to like weight and pressure, a firm hold rather than a light one. They notice texture very early, and they have opinions about it long before they have words, which shows up as a baby who settles instantly in one blanket and complains steadily in another that feels identical to you.
What is less advertised is that this is a baby with an excellent memory for how things go. By six or seven months, many of them have a version of the evening they consider correct, and a deviation from it is treated less as a surprise than as an error. It is not distress, exactly. It is a complaint, lodged patiently, repeatedly, until it is addressed.
They are also, frequently and gloriously, greedy. Food is a real pleasure to this sign from the beginning, and mealtimes can be among the calmest parts of the day.
The toddler years
Everyone warns you about the stubbornness. Almost nobody explains what it actually is.
A Taurus toddler does not dig in because they want to win. They dig in because they have arrived at a position, slowly, and undoing it feels like being asked to undo the ground. This is why the usual toddler tactics fail so completely here. Distraction works on a child whose attention is loose. Counting down from three works on a child who responds to pressure. Neither has much effect on a small person who has simply decided.
What does work is time and warning. Almost every standoff with a Taurus child is really a standoff about pace. Tell them what is coming, let them see it coming, and then let the change happen at the speed of an ordinary thing rather than an emergency.
They are enormously affectionate in this stretch, too, and physical about it. Leaning, climbing on, sitting against. The same sign that will not move for an hour will also lie on you for one.
Starting school
Teachers call Taurus children reliable, which is true and nowhere near the whole of it.
They work through things properly. They are uninterested in being fast and very interested in being finished, and they will keep going long after quicker children have abandoned the task. Handwriting, building, sorting, anything that rewards patience tends to suit them. Being hurried does not, and a Taurus child under time pressure will often slow down rather than speed up, which reads as defiance and is closer to a system overload.
Friendships follow the same pattern. They make them slowly, keep them for years, and are deeply put out by rearranged seating plans. A best friend who moves away is a genuine grief to this sign, and worth treating as one.
Money, possessions and fairness of portion become surprisingly vivid around this age. So does a strong sense of what belongs to whom.
If you are their parent
You will spend a certain amount of your life waiting for this child, and the waiting is the whole technique.
The single most useful shift is to stop reading slowness as reluctance. A Taurus child is not refusing to get in the car. They are still finishing the thing they were doing, and a person cannot be simultaneously finishing and starting. Build the extra ten minutes into the day rather than fighting for them at the door, and a large amount of daily conflict simply evaporates.
Be careful with substitutions and small deceptions. This sign notices the different brand, the shortcut home, the two pages you skipped, and noticing feels to them like being tricked. It costs more trust than it saves time.
And accept the pleasures. Taurus children are the ones who will stop and put their face into a flower, who want to stroke the fabric in the shop, who take the biscuit apart to eat it in the correct order. It is an unusually sensory way to be alive, and a childhood full of it is not a bad thing to have had.
The two levers
Most evenings with a Taurus child come down to these. One list is what brings them back to you, the other is what sends them off.
What settles them
- Something to touch: a particular blanket corner, a smooth stone, the same worn label on the same toy.
- Sameness done properly, so the song, the order and the cup are all the ones they were last night.
- Time that has not been counted out loud, and a grown up who is visibly not in a hurry.
What sets them off
- Being rushed through a change nobody warned them about.
- A substitution made quietly, in the hope they will not notice. They notice.
- Losing physical comfort: wet sleeves, a scratchy seam, a coat done up too tight.
Three small things to try this week
-
Give the warning in sight of a clock they can read
Not five minutes, which means nothing, but a visible unit: when this song ends, when the bath water has gone, when the last page is turned. A Taurus child is not resisting the thing itself. They are resisting the suddenness of it, and a warning they can watch approaching removes almost all of the resistance.
-
Let a comfort object be genuinely theirs
This is the sign most likely to attach hard to one specific object, and the attachment is real rather than a habit to be broken. Wash it on a schedule you control, buy a duplicate early if you can, and resist the urge to upgrade it. The battered one is the one that works.
-
Change one thing, not three
New room, new bed and new bedtime in the same week will cost you a month. Move the bed first, live with it until it is unremarkable, and then move the next thing. Taurus children absorb change beautifully when it arrives alone and slowly, and barely at all when it arrives as a project.
Read next, with Taurus in mind
Are you a Taurus as well?
A child is only half of the weather in a house. Read the Taurus parent for what you bring into the room, and for the reading of you with a child of every one of the twelve.
Is Taurus their Moon?
The Moon sign often shows more plainly than the Sun in the first years. If Taurus is where your child's Moon sits, read the Taurus Moon for the need underneath, the night and the comfort that lands.
