Two temperaments, one house

People talk about sibling rivalry as though it were one thing. It is at least four things, and which one you have got depends less on age gap and personality than on the particular collision of two temperaments.

The useful thing about sorting siblings by element is that it stops you asking the wrong question.

The wrong question is which child is causing the problem. In most houses neither is. What you have is a collision between two ways of operating, both of which are fine on their own, and which happen to be incompatible in one specific area.

Here are the four collisions that come up most, and what tends to help.

Fire and earth: the pace war

Aries, Leo or Sagittarius living with Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn.

This is the commonest source of daily friction, and it is almost entirely about speed.

The fire child is ready. They have been ready for some time. The earth child is still finishing, and the more they are hurried the slower they become. The fire child interprets this as deliberate obstruction, which, after the fourth morning, it very nearly is.

What helps: stop making them share a timetable at the pressure points. Get the earth child started earlier rather than trying to make them faster. Give the fire child something to do in the gap, ideally something that involves going out of the door and coming back. And be careful with the language: describing one child as slow and the other as impatient sets both of them up for a decade.

Air and water: the feelings mismatch

Gemini, Libra or Aquarius living with Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.

The air child says the true thing. The water child is devastated by it. The air child genuinely does not understand what happened, because they were simply making an observation and have already moved on.

Then the water child goes quiet, and the air child either does not notice or finds the sulking irritating, and a small event becomes a fortnight.

What helps: teach both directions. The air child needs to learn that some accurate things land like a slap and that an apology costs nothing. The water child needs to learn that it was not intended, which they find genuinely hard to believe. Do not require the water child to stop being hurt as the price of the apology.

Same element, different mode: the mirror

Two fire children. Two earth children. Two water children.

The friction here is not incompatibility, it is competition for the same territory.

Two fire children fight for first. Two earth children fight over possessions and territory with a patience that can last years. Two water children go through complicated cycles of closeness and injury that are impenetrable from outside and extremely intense from inside.

What helps: deliberate separation of domains. Give them different things to be good at, different rooms or corners, different jobs. This is the combination most damaged by comparison, and the comparison does not have to be spoken to be felt. Two Leos in one house need two stages.

Fixed and mutable: the immovable and the elusive

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius living with Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces.

The fixed child has decided. The mutable child has already changed the subject, the plan and the rules of the game.

The fixed child experiences this as bad faith. The mutable child experiences the fixed one as a wall. Neither is wrong. A Scorpio child who has committed to an arrangement will not accept that a Gemini sibling has simply lost interest, and will assume something was done to them.

What helps: make the changes explicit. Announce that the game has changed rather than letting it drift. The fixed child copes far better with a stated change than with an unannounced one, and the mutable child loses very little by saying it out loud.

The pairs that usually run smoothly

Worth knowing, if only to enjoy them:

Fire and air. These two energise each other. The air child has the idea, the fire child does it. The noise level is high and the conflict level is usually low.

Earth and water. A quieter, steadier pairing. The earth child provides the ground, the water child provides the warmth, and they frequently become genuinely close in adulthood.

Cancer and almost anyone younger. This sign takes to a younger sibling with real tenderness, provided they were not displaced too abruptly.

Libra with anybody. Libra adapts, which is lovely and also the thing to watch. A Libra child paired with a strong sibling will accommodate them so completely that nobody notices they have stopped asking for anything.

The three that need naming

A few specific combinations that cause more trouble than their reputation suggests.

Aries and Capricorn. One wants to go now, the other wants it done properly, and both are convinced they are being sensible. Frequently sorts itself out around ten and is hard work before that.

Leo and Scorpio. Both fixed, both intense, one entirely public and one entirely private. The Leo cannot understand the withholding; the Scorpio finds the performance unbearable. They often end up extremely loyal to one another, eventually, after some years.

Gemini and Taurus. The fastest and the slowest, sharing a car. Enough said.

The thing that matters more than any of this

Being seen separately.

Almost every sibling difficulty is made worse by being handled as a unit: the children, the boys, you two. Fifteen minutes alone with each child, doing something ordinary, does more for the relationship between them than any amount of adjudication, because most of what looks like rivalry is two people competing for a resource they are not confident there is enough of.

That is true for all twelve signs, and it is the only piece of advice on this page that works in every house.
