Five kinds of comfort, and who needs which

Most of us comfort a child the way we like to be comforted, which works beautifully about a third of the time. Here are the five things people actually do, and which children each one reaches.

There is a moment, somewhere in the second year, when you realise that the thing that worked on your first child is actively annoying your second.

It is a genuinely disorienting discovery, because comfort feels instinctive. You do the thing that seems obviously kind. And when the obviously kind thing produces a child who pushes you away, the natural conclusion is that something is wrong with one of you.

Usually what has happened is simpler. There are several kinds of comfort, you have one, and this child needs a different one.

The five

Pressure. Being held firmly. Weight, contact, a hand on the back, being squeezed rather than stroked.

Motion. Movement, changing room, going outside, being carried somewhere. The problem is solved by relocating.

Words. Being told what is happening, what will happen, why. Naming the feeling out loud. Explanation as a soothing agent.

Withdrawal. Being left, deliberately and warmly, with the door open. Space without abandonment.

Company. Simple presence. Not doing anything, not saying anything, just the fact of somebody being in the room.

Most adults have a strong preference for one or two of these and reach for them automatically. Almost nobody uses all five.

Who needs which

Pressure: Taurus, Capricorn, and often Scorpio

Earth children in particular are reached through the body. A Taurus child mid-distress is frequently calmed by firm contact long before anything you say lands, and stroking is less effective than steady weight.

Capricorn is similar but more contained. They may not want to be picked up, and will take a hand on the shoulder and then stay leaning against you for some time.

Scorpio takes pressure but only from the right person, and only once they have stopped resisting. Offered too early it is an intrusion. Offered after the peak it works very well.

Motion: Aries, Sagittarius, and Gemini in a specific way

Fire children solve feelings by moving. The tantrum that will not end indoors frequently ends within ninety seconds of being outside, and nobody is more surprised by this than the parent who spent twenty minutes trying to talk it through.

For Sagittarius this is close to absolute. Being taken somewhere is the intervention.

Gemini uses motion differently, as a change of scene rather than an outlet. A different room, a different window, something new to look at, and the mood resets.

Words: Gemini, Aquarius, Virgo

Air children are reached through explanation, and it is remarkable how young this starts working.

For Gemini, talking is the release. They need to say it more than they need to hear it.

For Aquarius, what calms is a reason. Not reassurance, which they find slightly insulting, but an account of why the situation is as it is. Given a good one they frequently just stop being upset, which is disconcerting to watch.

Virgo is the earth sign that belongs in this group. Their distress is often specific and worried, and a clear sentence about what happens next does more than a cuddle.

Withdrawal: Scorpio, Aquarius, Capricorn

Some children need everybody to leave, and this is the hardest kind of comfort for a devoted parent to offer, because it looks exactly like giving up.

A Scorpio child who has closed does not want to be opened. An Aquarius child who has had enough of people wants the room to themselves. A Capricorn who is embarrassed wants to recover in private and come back as though nothing had happened.

The technique that works is leaving without leaving. Go into the next room, stay audible, come back briefly, demand nothing. What they need is the absence of an audience, not the absence of you.

Company: Cancer, Libra, Pisces, Leo

Water children and Libra need presence more than they need technique.

For Cancer the specific person matters enormously. For Pisces it is closeness and lowered volume. For Libra it is simply not being left alone with it. For Leo, company means being watched sympathetically, because the feeling needs a witness.

In all four cases the mistake is doing too much. Sitting down nearby and saying almost nothing is the whole intervention.

The wrong comfort, and what it looks like

This is the useful part, because the failures are recognisable once you know the pattern.

  • Words offered to a fire child mid-storm extend the storm. They hear a new thing to argue with.
  • Motion offered to an earth child feels like being hurried, and they dig in harder.
  • Pressure offered to an air child feels like being trapped when what they wanted was an explanation.
  • Company pressed on a Scorpio or an Aquarius feels like surveillance.
  • Withdrawal offered to a Cancer or a Pisces is experienced as abandonment, and it lands hard.

If your comfort is reliably making things worse, you are probably not doing it badly. You are probably doing the wrong one well.

How to work out which one you have got

Watch what they do when nobody is helping.

The child who goes and finds a blanket wants pressure. The child who leaves the room wants withdrawal. The child who follows you around without speaking wants company. The child who tells you about it eleven times wants words. The child who suddenly wants to go outside wants motion.

Children self prescribe from about two onwards, fairly accurately, and mostly we override it because the prescription is inconvenient or does not look like comfort to us.

When the usual comfort stops working

A child reaches for their own comfort with great consistency, and then one evening they do not. That is not the chart failing. That is the chart telling you something has changed: they are coming down with something, something happened at nursery, or the Moon is moving through a sign that pulls against their own.

So ask, where they are old enough to answer. Offer rather than apply. And treat a sudden change of comfort as the signal it is, because this is a child who has just told you, in the only language they have, that today is different.

One particular transition can carry that difference home. See how Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces return from nursery for three water-sign versions of the same doorway.
