The Moon sign and the four in the morning wake
At four in the morning nobody is their Sun sign. They are pure need, and the old tradition has a specific name for the part of a chart that governs need. It is the Moon, and it is the one worth knowing early.
There is a particular loneliness to the middle of the night with a small child, and it has a lot to do with the sheer number of things you are trying at random.
Held. Put down. Walked. Rocked. Sung to. Fed. Not fed. The light on, the light off. And somewhere in that sequence, usually after twenty minutes, one of them works, and you have no idea why that one, and next week it will be a different one.
This piece narrows the list, because astrology is precise about what a person reaches for when they are past reasoning, and it is not the Sun sign everybody quotes.
Why the Moon, and not the Sun
In the older system, the Sun is what a person is becoming and the Moon is what a person needs.
That distinction is not very interesting when you are describing a colleague. It is extremely interesting when you are describing someone who is nine months old, because a baby is almost entirely made of the second thing. They have needs, instincts, habits and reflexes, and the long project of becoming a person is barely under way.
So a Sun sign reading of a baby is a description of the adult in the distance. A Moon sign reading is a description of the small creature currently awake.
If you want the mechanics, they are in sun sign, moon sign, rising. The short version: the Moon crosses a sign in a little over two days, so you need a birth date and ideally a birth time, and any free chart calculator will tell you in about a minute.
The four kinds of night
Each of the twelve has its own full reading in the twelve Moons. Here are the four elements instead, because at four in the morning the element is doing most of the work and the finer distinctions are beyond everybody involved.
A fire Moon: Aries, Leo or Sagittarius
These children tend to wake up all the way. There is rarely a drowsy middle state. They come up loud, hot and often furious, and the fury is not necessarily about anything.
What tends to help is something that meets the energy rather than trying to damp it immediately: movement, a change of room, being carried rather than held still. Trying to shush a fire Moon into calm from a standing start often extends the whole business, because being contained is the thing they are objecting to.
They also tend to go back down fast once the peak has passed, which is the compensation. Each fire Moon in full: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
An earth Moon: Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn
Earth Moon children are usually the most settled sleepers of the four, right up until something changes, and then they are the most disturbed by it.
New room, new cot, a different sheet, teeth, a holiday. The disruption is real and it is specific to the change rather than general. What helps is physical comfort and sameness: firm contact, weight, the same blanket, the same words in the same order, minimal improvisation.
Avoid the temptation to fix a bad week by trying three new approaches. With this Moon, the new approaches are the problem. Each earth Moon in full: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
An air Moon: Gemini, Libra or Aquarius
These are the ones who wake up and start talking.
An air Moon child frequently surfaces alert and sociable at an hour you find offensive, and what they seem to want is contact of a mental kind rather than a physical one. Quiet talking, being told what is happening, a hand and a low voice, sometimes just the confirmation that somebody is there and awake.
Being held tightly and silently can make it worse rather than better. So can total darkness and silence for the Gemini Moon in particular, who often settles more easily with a little something going on. Each air Moon in full: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
A water Moon: Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces
Water Moon children wake needing a person, and usually a specific one.
This is the Moon most likely to produce the child who will not resettle for a perfectly competent other parent, which is hard on everybody and is not a judgement on anyone’s ability. It is also the Moon most sensitive to the emotional state of whoever arrives, which is a slightly unfair thing to be told at four in the morning, but a tense adult genuinely does prolong this one.
What tends to help is closeness, low light, a soft repeated sound, and a slower pace than you feel like going at. The last of those is the hardest and the most effective. Each water Moon in full: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Where this ends
The Moon tells you what your child reaches for. It does not tell you how to feed them, settle them or arrange their sleep, and neither do we: those decisions are yours, and where you have a concern about your child’s health they belong with a doctor or a health visitor. We read the sky. We do not practise medicine, and we will never pretend the two are the same job.
One practical note
If you do look up the Moon sign, look it up once, write it on something, and then forget the chart for a while.
You are not consulting a chart nightly. You are carrying one fact about your child, the deepest one there is, so that on the fourth wake of the night you reach for the right thing first instead of the thing that worked for somebody else’s baby.
That is a small advantage. At four in the morning, a small advantage is everything.
