Four kinds of weather
Advice about tantrums almost always assumes one kind: loud, sudden, over in ten minutes. Anyone with two children knows there are several. Here are four, sorted by element, with what actually ends each one.
The standard advice on tantrums is reasonable and it describes one weather system. Stay calm, stay nearby, do not negotiate, wait it out, reconnect afterwards. It is good advice for a storm that arrives fast and leaves fast.
The trouble starts when your child has a different weather system. Then the advice does not fail dramatically, it just quietly does nothing, and you conclude that you are handling it wrong.
There are at least four systems. They are usefully sorted by element, because the element describes the shape of the reaction better than the individual sign does.
Fire: the explosion
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
It arrives at full volume with almost no run up. There is often a physical component: throwing, hitting the floor, running. It is loud enough that strangers look, and it is genuinely enormous while it lasts.
It is also, usually, short. Fire tantrums burn the fuel and stop, and the child afterwards is frequently completely fine in a way that the adults find hard to keep up with.
What sets it off: being blocked. Not being told no in the abstract, but being physically or practically stopped at the moment of doing. Losing. Being made to wait when they had already started.
What makes it worse: meeting it with equal volume, which extends it, and long explanations, which give it something to push against. A fire tantrum interrupted by a lecture becomes an argument, and an argument can go on all afternoon.
What ends it: space, a flat voice, very few words, and something to move towards afterwards. Do not attempt reconciliation at the peak. Wait for the drop, which comes on its own, and then be warm quickly. Fire children do not hold grudges and will be baffled if you do.
Earth: the immovable
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
This one is quieter and much longer. The child stops. They sit down, or refuse to move, or simply will not put the shoe on, and they will still be there in twenty minutes. There may be very little noise at all.
It is the least dramatic tantrum and by a distance the most frustrating, because there is nothing to wait out. It does not peak.
What sets it off: being hurried, an unannounced change, or a task that has gone wrong in a way that offends their sense of how it should be. For Virgo in particular, an error made in front of somebody.
What makes it worse: pressure of any kind. Counting down, physical removal, bargaining upwards. Each of these adds something new to refuse.
What ends it: removing the audience and removing the clock. Sit down nearby. Say one short thing and then be quiet for a genuinely long time. Earth children come out of it when the pressure has gone, not when the argument is won, and the single most effective move available is to become visibly unhurried.
Air: the argument
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
Air tantrums are verbal. There is a case being made, at length, with a surprising amount of structure. There may be tears, but there is also a barrister.
They tend to be less physically intense and considerably more exhausting, because the child is engaging you rather than discharging.
What sets it off: an instruction with no reason attached, being contradicted, or, in the Libra case, being caught between two things and forced to choose.
What makes it worse: debating. This is the trap, and it is very easy to fall into because the child is being articulate and it feels rude not to engage. Every counter argument you offer extends the event by several minutes.
What ends it: one reason, stated once, and then a polite refusal to continue. Not a punishment, not silence exactly, just an end to the supply of new material. Air children de-escalate once the conversation stops being available, and they will often return twenty minutes later wanting to discuss it reasonably, which is worth accepting.
Water: the flood
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
This is the one that does not look like a tantrum at all, which is why it is so often mishandled. The child is overwhelmed. They may be sobbing in a way that has no obvious floor to it, or they may have gone completely silent and left the room.
It does not respond to any technique that involves waiting it out at a distance, because the distance is part of the problem.
What sets it off: accumulation more often than a single trigger. Too long a day, too much noise, somebody else being upset, a hurt from three hours ago that has finally surfaced. With Scorpio specifically, a sense of having been treated unjustly.
What makes it worse: being asked to explain while it is happening, being told it is nothing, and being left alone when the leaving was not their idea.
What ends it: presence without demands. Close, quiet, low light, no questions. Water children come back slowly, and they usually tell you what it was about much later and in a completely different room.
The one thing that is true for all four
Nothing you say during it is being processed. That is the case for every child of every element, and it is the reason the standard advice starts with stay calm.
The difference is only in what you do with the not-saying-anything. Fire needs room. Earth needs time. Air needs the debate to close. Water needs a person nearby.
And afterwards, all four need the same thing, which is for it to be over without a post mortem. A short repair, a normal voice, and back to whatever you were doing. The child who is asked to account for their meltdown learns mostly to be ashamed of it, and shame is not a shortcut to self control at any age.
