Twelve ways to resist bedtime

Every child fights the end of the day. What changes from one to the next is the shape of the fight: the stalling, the second wind, the negotiation, the sudden urgent question about death. Here is the evening, read twelve ways.

Bedtime is the most honest hour of the day. A child who has held it together through nursery, the shops and the end of a biscuit is, by seven in the evening, entirely out of reserves, and what is left is whatever they actually are.

Which is why the same routine, followed identically, produces four completely different evenings in four different houses. It is not that one family has cracked it and another has not. It is that the standard bedtime routine, the one in every leaflet, is built for an average child, and the average child does not live anywhere.

So here are twelve versions of the standoff. Not twelve routines to follow, because a routine is a personal thing and yours is probably fine. Twelve descriptions of what is actually happening in the fifteen minutes before the light goes off, and the one adjustment that tends to shorten it.

One line before the twelve, so it never has to be repeated. We read the evening, not the body. If you are worried about your child’s sleep or their health, that belongs with a doctor or a health visitor, and no reading replaces that conversation.

Aries: the second wind

The Aries evening problem is not tiredness, it is momentum. This child is going at speed right up until they stop, and the stopping has to happen somewhere. If it does not happen before pyjamas, it happens instead of them.

They are also the most likely of the twelve to be genuinely energised by the fight itself. An argument at bedtime wakes an Aries child up.

What tends to shorten it: get the last burst out earlier and deliberately. Something physical after tea, before the bath, that finishes rather than trails off. Then make the sequence fast and non-negotiable. Long gentle wind downs are wonderful for other signs and give this one forty minutes of material to work with.

Taurus: the immovable object

A Taurus child at bedtime is not resisting sleep. They are resisting the interruption of whatever they are currently enjoying, which happens to be everything.

Once they are actually in bed this is frequently one of the best sleepers of the twelve. The whole battle is at the boundary.

What tends to shorten it: warnings you can see. Not five more minutes, which is an abstraction, but the end of this episode, the last page, the water going out of the bath. And then absolute sameness in the order of what follows. A Taurus evening that never varies eventually stops needing to be argued about at all.

Gemini: the mind that will not close

The Gemini bedtime problem lives entirely above the neck. The body is tired. The head is still reporting on the day, and it wants somebody to talk to about it.

This is the child who has four urgent questions, a story they forgot to tell you, and a sudden interest in what happens to the moon in the daytime.

What tends to shorten it: give the talking a slot before the lights go out rather than trying to suppress it after. Five minutes of proper conversation, deliberately ended, empties more of the head than an hour of shushing. The questions will keep coming; answer the first two properly and then say the rest is for tomorrow, which with this sign is genuinely accepted about half the time.

Cancer: the long goodbye

For a Cancer child, going to bed is a separation, and separations are the thing they find hardest. The stalling is usually not about the bed at all. It is about the leaving.

They are also the ones most likely to raise something troubling at the door, because bedtime is when the day’s feelings surface.

What tends to shorten it: an ending ritual that is identical every night and unmistakably final, plus a way of staying connected after you have gone. The same phrase, the same last thing, and something of yours that stays in the room. And take the doorway conversation seriously, briefly, because it is usually real.

Leo: the audience leaves

Bedtime, for a Leo, is the moment the day stops being about them. That is the whole difficulty, and it explains behaviour that otherwise looks like pure stalling.

Expect performance: one more song, watch me do this, the elaborate goodnight to every member of the household.

What tends to shorten it: front load the attention. Ten genuinely undivided minutes before the routine starts, where somebody watches them do something and says so. A Leo who has been properly seen goes to bed far more easily than one who is still trying to be.

Virgo: the checking

The Virgo evening is full of small anxieties, and they arrive at the point where there is nothing left to distract from them. Is the door shut. Is tomorrow a school day. Is the drawing still on the table where they left it.

They may also want the room a specific way, and be genuinely unable to settle until it is.

What tends to shorten it: a short, deliberate checking round, done with them, at the same point every evening. It sounds like it would feed the worry and it usually does the opposite, because it gives the checking a place to happen and a moment to be finished.

Libra: the company problem

A Libra child does not want to be the only one awake. That is most of it.

They will negotiate charmingly, agree with everything you say, and then appear in the doorway. The agreement was sincere; the being alone is the problem.

What tends to shorten it: overlap rather than a clean exit. Sitting in the room while they settle, not talking, for a finite and stated period. Also the sense that they have chosen something about the evening, which for this sign takes almost all the resistance out: which two stories, which pyjamas, offered as a pair.

Scorpio: the closed door

Scorpio children often do not stall. They go to bed and then lie there, awake, with whatever they are thinking about, and you find out about it two days later.

When they do resist, it tends to be about control rather than comfort: an objection to being sent, which is a different thing from an objection to going.

What tends to shorten it: hand over as much of the evening as you can. Let them decide the order of some of it. And be somewhere available afterwards without hovering, because this is the sign that says the real thing at the light switch, once, quietly, and only if you are not waiting for it.

Sagittarius: the day was not enough

If the day did not contain enough outside, the evening will contain a Sagittarius child running the length of the hallway at half past seven.

They also go through a stretch of raising enormous questions at bedtime, about death and God and where the universe stops, which is not a stalling tactic even though it is extremely effective as one.

What tends to shorten it: more daylight and more space earlier, which is the single biggest lever with this sign. And take one big question seriously per night, with a real answer, then close the subject kindly. Refusing to engage at all tends to make it worse.

Capricorn: the responsible one

Capricorn children frequently go to bed without much fuss and then worry about tomorrow.

The visible bedtime is easy. What is less visible is a child running through the things they have to remember, the thing they got wrong today, and the possibility that they will be late.

What tends to shorten it: deal with tomorrow out loud before bed. The bag is packed, the kit is by the door, here is what happens in the morning. A Capricorn child sleeps considerably better once the plan has been said aloud by an adult who is clearly in charge of it.

Aquarius: the unconvinced

An Aquarius child will want to know why bedtime is now. Not as a delaying tactic, or not only as one. They have genuinely not accepted the premise.

They are also the most likely of the twelve to simply operate on their own schedule regardless of what has been arranged, quite calmly, for years.

What tends to shorten it: a real reason, once, that holds up. And as much genuine autonomy inside the routine as you can stand, because this sign complies with a system they had a hand in and resists one imposed on them, and the difference is not small.

Pisces: still somewhere else

The Pisces problem at bedtime is usually the transition into it. They are inside a game, a story, an elaborate internal thing, and being extracted from it is a shock.

The second Pisces problem is accumulation. A day with too much in it does not show up at four in the afternoon. It shows up at bedtime, all at once, as tears about a sock.

What tends to shorten it: longer, slower transitions and a quieter day behind them. Lower the lights earlier than seems necessary. And tell the story rather than reading it, with them in it, which brings this child in from wherever they were more reliably than anything else on the list.

The thing all twelve have in common

Not a routine. A direction of travel.

Every one of these evenings goes better when the adult is visibly not in a hurry, when the sequence is known, and when the child has been properly attended to at some point in the preceding hour. That is it. The rest is adjusting for who is in front of you: more warning for the earth signs, more talking for the air ones, more quiet for the water ones, more running for the fire ones.

Which is exactly what the sky has been telling us all along. There are twelve temperaments, not one average child, and the evening you are having is the evening your child was born to have. Read the sign, and the seven o’clock hour stops being a mystery and starts being a conversation you already know the shape of.
