A Leo baby is born between around 23 July and 22 August, at the height of the northern summer. This is the sign of the lion, and the only sign whose ruler is the Sun. That gives a Leo name a lot of light to draw on. Lions, suns, gold, crowns, sunflowers, and the big warm heart that sits in the middle of it all.

Leo children want to be seen, properly and warmly, and a Leo name tends to be one that can stand in the middle of a room without shrinking. Every name below has a checked origin and meaning. Every one also has a reason that belongs to Leo, not just a general sparkle. Here are ten to start with. After that come the threads of the sign, so you can test any name yourself.

Ten Leo names to start the list

  • Leonie (girl). From the Latin name Leonius, built on Leo, “lion”. A soft, bright way to give a girl the lion.
  • Ravi (boy). Sanskrit, “sun”. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and this name says it in four letters.
  • Orla (girl). Irish, from Órlaith, “golden ruler” or “golden princess”. Gold and a crown together, which is about as Leo as a name can get.
  • Leander (boy). Greek, “lion man”. Grand enough for a lion, with Lee or Leo as an easy short form.
  • Sunniva (girl). From Old English, “sun gift”. A child born in Leo season really is a gift of the Sun.
  • Lev (boy). Russian for “lion”, and in Hebrew it means “heart”. Leo is the sign of the heart, so this one carries both.
  • Samson (boy). From the Hebrew for “sun”. An old, strong name with a lot of warmth in the sound.
  • Aurelia (girl). Latin, from a word for “golden”. The colour of the Leo Sun.
  • Malik (boy). Arabic, “king”. The lion is the king of the beasts, and Leo is the royal sign of the zodiac.
  • Sunny (any). English, “sunny, cheerful”. Simple, happy, and exactly what a Leo baby does to a room.

What makes a name feel like Leo

A Leo name does not have to roar. It needs to carry one of the threads below. Learn them and you can judge any name on any list.

The lion

The figure of Leo is the lion, and “leo” is the Latin word for one. The lion is the king of the animals in almost every telling. It is proud, warm-blooded, loyal to its pride and magnificent when it rests in the sun. It does not need to hurry. It knows it will be noticed.

That is the Leo child at their best: generous, dignified, playful, and glowing when someone they love is truly watching. Names that mean lion are the most direct way in, and there are lion names in nearly every language.

At the heart of the lion in the sky sits its brightest star, Regulus. Its name is Latin for “little king”, and its old names in Arabic and Latin both mean “the heart of the lion”.

The Sun, the ruler

Every sign has a ruling planet that sets its tone. Leo is ruled by the Sun, the centre that everything else turns around. In astrology the Sun is the self, warmth, life, pride and the wish to shine. It is also in its own home here: no sign holds the Sun more naturally than Leo.

This is why Sun names are so right for a Leo. Sol, Ravi, Surya, Shams, Helios, Samson: they are the planet of the sign in a dozen languages. Light names, such as Clara and Lucia, sit close beside them, because the Sun is the great light of the sky.

Fire, the element

The twelve signs belong to four elements: fire, earth, air and water. Leo is a fire sign, with Aries and Sagittarius. Aries is the quick match. Sagittarius is the campfire on the move. Leo is the hearth fire, the one that stays lit at the centre of the house and keeps everybody warm. There is more about this in the four elements before the twelve signs.

Leo is also a fixed sign. Fixed signs hold steady. They keep what they start. So Leo fire is steady fire, a glow rather than a flash, and names with weight and warmth suit it better than names that flicker.

High summer, the season and the months

In the northern hemisphere Leo comes in the hottest, brightest weeks of the year: the last week of July and most of August. Long evenings, gold fields, sunflowers turning their heads, poppies in the hedges. Summer names and August names belong here naturally.

In the southern hemisphere Leo falls in midwinter instead. The lion and the Sun are the same, and a Sun name in the darkest weeks has its own beauty: a light to come home to. If you are naming in July or August south of the equator, you may lean on the Sun and lion threads rather than the summer ones.

Colours, stones and flowers

The colours of Leo are gold, orange and the yellow of sunlight. The stones most often given to the sign are the ruby, the peridot and the onyx. The ruby is the traditional birthstone of July and the peridot the birthstone of August. The flowers of Leo are the sunflower and the marigold, both golden and both turned towards the light. The birth flowers of August are the gladiolus and the poppy.

The heart of the sign

In astrology Leo rules the heart, and the sign itself is heart in the other sense too. Warmth, loyalty, generosity, courage, play, pride and love. A Leo child gives with both hands and needs to be seen back. Names that mean love, joy, light and a big heart carry this, even without a lion in them.

Leo baby names, in themed groups

Each group has a short note and a table. Every meaning has been checked, and where a name has more than one possible root, the table tells you.

That comes to more than sixty Leo names, and every one of them can explain itself.

Names that look Leo but belong elsewhere

Some names turn up on Leo lists because they start with “Leo” or “Le”. They are fine names, but they do not mean what people think.

  • Leonora is an Italian short form of Eleanor. It has no lion in it at all.
  • Leila is a form of Layla, which means “night” in Arabic. Beautiful, but it is the opposite of a Sun name.
  • Leilani is Hawaiian, “heavenly flowers” or “royal child”. The royal meaning could suit Leo, but there is no lion.
  • Roy comes from Gaelic ruadh, “red”. People often link it with French roi, “king”, but that is a later association. If you want the king, Leroy or Rex is the true one.
  • Apollo is often listed as a Sun name, and Apollo was linked with the Sun, but the meaning of his name is unknown. Helios is the name that truly means “sun”.

Choosing well

Say it out loud, then say it again

A name is spoken far more than it is written. Run each name on your list through these tests.

  • With the surname. Say it in full, first name to surname, several times over. Leo names often end in a vowel (Leona, Aurelia, Orla, Sunniva), and they flow best before a surname that starts with a consonant. Two strong sounds can crash: Rex Rix is hard work.
  • With the nickname. Leonardo becomes Leo or Nardo. Augusta becomes Gussie. Aurelia becomes Aura or Rae. Leander becomes Lee. Decide whether you like the short form, because it may be the one that sticks.
  • With the initials. Put first, middle and last initials together and check they spell nothing unkind.
  • Across a park. Call it from the back door. Leo, Ravi, Rex and Sol carry well. Sunniva and Solveig need a clear first syllable.
  • The Leo test: does it sound proud when you introduce them? A Leo child will hear their name said to other people all their life. Say “This is…” and then the name. If you feel a little glow, it is a Leo name.

First and middle names for a Leo

A strong Leo pair often puts the lion or the Sun in one name and gold, summer or the heart in the other. A grand first name likes a short middle, and a short first name can carry a grand one.

First and middle The two threads
Leonie Marigold the lion and Leo’s own flower
Aurelia Sol gold and the Sun
Orla Sunniva the golden princess and the Sun’s gift
Clara Augusta brightness and the Leo month
Carys Leona love and the lioness
Leander Rex the lion and the king
August Lev the Leo month and a lion with a heart
Samson Ravi the Sun in Hebrew and in Sanskrit
Lionel Basil the lion cub and the royal herb
Sunny Ari sunshine and a lion, for any gender

For a middle name alone, short Leo words do a lot: Sol, Joy, Rae and Leona for girls; Leo, Rex, Lev and Ravi for boys.

Brother and sister names across the zodiac

If you are naming a second child, or the first child has a name already, look for a thread that ties the two signs together.

  • A Cancer sibling. Cancer is ruled by the Moon and Leo by the Sun. A Sun name and a Moon name side by side is the oldest pairing in the sky. See Cancer baby names.
  • An Aquarius sibling. Aquarius sits opposite Leo: the one and the many, the heart and the crowd. A Leo name and an Aquarius name balance each other well. See Aquarius baby names.
  • An Aries sibling. The Sun is exalted in Aries, which means it is honoured there, almost as much as at home in Leo. So a Sun name suits an Aries brother or sister too. See Aries baby names.
  • A Sagittarius sibling. The third fire sign. Let the lion and the archer share the warmth while each keeps a figure of their own. See Sagittarius baby names.
  • A Virgo sibling. Virgo follows Leo, still in August, so August and Augusta can be shared across the two. See Virgo baby names.

The whole zodiac is on the zodiac baby names hub.

The chart is bigger than the Sun

When people say “he’s a Leo”, they mean the Sun sign. But every chart also has a Moon sign and a rising sign, and either can be Leo when the Sun is somewhere else. Sun, Moon and rising shows how the three read together.

A Leo Moon

The Moon shows what a child needs underneath, when the day has been too much. A Leo Moon needs to be seen warmly, and being overlooked stings more than being told off. If the Sun is in another sign and the Moon is in Leo, a Leo name in the middle place is a quiet way to honour that need: a Rose Clara, a Thomas Leander. Read more on the Leo Moon child.

Leo rising

The rising sign is the first impression, the way a child comes into a room. With Leo rising, they make an entrance. People notice them before they have said a word. Names with presence suit this: Leonardo, Aurelia, Regina, Samson. The rising sign in children explains how to find it from the birth time.

Due near a cusp, or early, or late

Babies arrive when they decide to. If your due date falls in the last ten days of July or the third week of August, your baby may be born a Cancer or a Virgo instead. The exact moment the Sun crosses into the next sign shifts by about a day from year to year. Born on the cusp explains how to check once the baby is here.

The simple answer is a shortlist that works either way.

  • Due around 20 to 24 July (Cancer or Leo). A name that holds the Sun and the Moon together works on both sides: Soleil or Sunniva as a first name with a Moon name in the middle, for example. Ruby, the July birthstone, is also given to Leo as one of its stones.
  • Due around 20 to 24 August (Leo or Virgo). August and Augusta belong to the month whatever the sign. Poppy, the August flower, works on both sides too.
  • If the fire is what you most want to keep. The signs either side of Leo are water and earth, so no single name shares Leo’s element with them. If the fire matters most, choose a Sun or gold name. The Sun touches every chart, wherever it falls.

To see the full chart before you decide, how to read a child’s birth chart takes you through it step by step.

A name to be seen by

A Leo child will hear their name called across playgrounds and stages, read out at birthdays, written on the front of cards. More than anything they will hear it from you, said warmly, in the voice that tells them they are seen. Choose the name you love saying. A Leo always knows the difference.

Once the name is chosen, double Leo is there if the Moon is in Leo too, Leo baby gifts has ideas for the welcome, and the Leo parent is worth a look if the lion runs in the family.
