Virgo baby names

A Virgo baby is born at harvest, under the maiden who holds an ear of grain, with Mercury as ruler. These names carry her: grain and furrow, careful minds and helping hands, herbs, sapphires and the last of the summer, every one checked at the source.

Virgo runs from around 23 August to 22 September. In the sky it is drawn as a maiden holding an ear of grain, and in the year it is harvest time: fields cut, fruit picked, the light going gold at the edges. The ruling planet is Mercury, the planet of the thinking, sorting, noticing mind. Put those together and you have the Virgo baby, the one who spots the single thing you moved and wants to help you put it back.

A Virgo name can hold any part of that picture. It can mean “maiden” or “grain”. It can belong to a harvest goddess, a healer or a wise counsellor. It can be a herb from the kitchen garden or the blue stone of September. Every name below has been checked for its true origin and meaning, which feels right for this sign in particular. Virgo would want the details correct.

Ten standout Virgo names

  • Cora (girl). From Kore, the Greek word for “maiden”, which was also a name of the harvest goddess’s daughter. The sign’s figure in four letters.
  • Spica (girl). Latin for “ear of grain”, and the name of the brightest star in Virgo, the one the maiden holds in her hand.
  • Demetrius (boy). From Demeter, the Greek goddess of the grain harvest. Dimitri and Demi are close by.
  • Sita (girl). Sanskrit for “furrow”, the line a plough cuts in a field, and the name of a harvest goddess in the Rigveda.
  • Hugo (boy). From an old Germanic word for “mind, thought”. Mercury’s gift to Virgo is a mind that keeps working.
  • Morwenna (girl). Old Cornish for “maiden, girl”, and the name of a Cornish saint. Many people guess it means “sea”. It does not.
  • Ephraim (boy). Hebrew for “fruitful”. Harvest in one warm old name.
  • Prudence (girl). From the Latin for good sense and foresight. The Virgo habit of thinking ahead, as a name.
  • Raphael (boy). Hebrew for “God heals”. Virgo is the sign of care, service and making things well.
  • Kanya (girl). A Thai name meaning “young woman”, from Sanskrit, where kanya is also the name of the sign Virgo itself.

What makes a name feel Virgo

A name does not have to say “Virgo” to belong to the sign. It only needs to catch one of these threads. Learn them once and you can test any name you meet, in any language.

Thread What it is A name might carry
The figure The maiden holding an ear of grain “Maiden”, “girl”, “star”, the star Spica
The ruler Mercury, in its own sign Mind, thought, counsel, a messenger, good judgement
The element Earth, the field ready for harvest Grain, furrow, farmer, fruitful
The season Late summer to the start of autumn August and September names, autumn words
Colours, stones, flowers Navy, brown and green; sapphire; asters and herbs Gem, colour, herb and flower names
Qualities Careful, helpful, modest, precise Help, healing, purity, prudence

The maiden and her ear of grain

The constellation of Virgo is one of the largest in the sky, second only to Hydra. It is drawn as a young woman, often with wings, holding a sheaf or a single ear of wheat. That ear is marked by Spica, a bright blue white star. You can find it by following the curve of the handle of the Plough down towards the horizon on a spring evening in the northern hemisphere.

The Greeks saw her as a few different maidens. One was Astraea, the star maiden of justice, who left the earth and rose into the sky as this constellation. Another was the daughter of Demeter, the grain goddess, whose return each year brings the crops. Either way, she is a careful, clear, capable young woman with the harvest in her hands. “Maiden” names and star names suit her.

Mercury, the ruler

Every sign has a ruling planet that sets its tone. Virgo’s is Mercury, the small, fast planet nearest the Sun. Mercury rules Gemini too, but the two signs use it very differently. Gemini’s Mercury talks. Virgo’s Mercury checks, sorts, mends and improves. In traditional astrology Mercury is both at home and exalted in Virgo, its two strongest positions, which is why this sign’s mind is so sharp and so busy. Names meaning mind, counsel, wisdom or good sense carry Virgo’s Mercury well.

Earth at harvest

The twelve signs fall into four elements: fire, earth, air and water. Virgo shares earth with Taurus and Capricorn. Taurus is earth in spring, soft and growing. Capricorn is earth in winter, stone and mountain. Virgo is earth at harvest, the field when the work of the year comes in. Grain, furrow, fruit and farmer names belong here. There is more about the elements in small children in the four elements.

Late summer into autumn

In the northern hemisphere, Virgo covers the end of August and most of September. Summer is finishing, school is starting, apples are on the trees. It is a season of getting ready, which is very Virgo. August and September names suit the sign, and so do words for autumn in other languages for a late Virgo.

In the southern hemisphere the same weeks are the end of winter and the start of spring. If harvest names feel wrong for a baby born into lengthening days, choose from the maiden, Mercury, the herbs and the qualities instead. Those work wherever you are.

Colours, stones and flowers

The colours most often given to Virgo are quiet ones: navy blue, soft brown, moss green and the colour of ripe wheat. The sapphire, the September birthstone, is the stone most linked to the sign. Early Virgos born in August have the poppy as their birth flower; September babies have the aster. Astrologers also give Virgo the useful plants of the kitchen garden, the herbs that are grown to be used.

The Virgo character

Virgo is a mutable sign. In astrology, mutable signs are the ones at the end of each season, and they adapt, adjust and get things ready for the change. A Virgo child is observant, thoughtful, helpful and precise. They like things done properly and they like to be useful. They can worry, and they tend to be modest about what they do well. You will find much more about the whole child in the Virgo child.

Short and modern Virgo names

If you want something brisk: Cora, Kore, Hugo, Ezra, Sita, Spica, Aki, Demi, Inés, Linus. All short, all with a real Virgo root.

Classic and vintage Virgo names

If you like a name your great grandmother might have answered to: Agnes, Martha, Prudence, Ruth, Augusta, Hugh, Alfred, Conrad, Rosemary, George. Old, steady names suit a sign that likes things well made.

Choosing well

Virgo parents and grandparents tend to research a name thoroughly, which is the right instinct. Here is a short checklist.

Hear it in your own family’s voice

Say the whole name with your surname at the speed you will really use it, especially when you are cross or in a rush. Watch for names that end in the sound the surname starts with (“Hugo Oakley” runs together). Listen for rhymes and for joke combinations a classmate might find.

Decide on the short form now

Most names get cut down. Demetrius will be Demi or Dimi. Prudence will be Prue. Minerva will be Minnie, and Alfred will be Alfie or Fred. Virgo children often care which version is used, and may correct you, so pick one you are happy to hear.

Check the initials

Write all the initials down in a row. Make sure they do not spell anything unfortunate, and check how they look on a label or a name tag.

Try it outdoors

Call the name across a garden or park, loudly, twice. Some soft names (Althea, Morwenna) fall away in the open air, which is fine for a middle name and harder for a first one.

Check the meaning yourself

This matters more for a Virgo than for most. Lots of popular lists give “meanings” that are not true. Harvey, for instance, is often listed as “harvest”, but it comes from an old Breton name built from words for “battle” or “iron” and “eager”. Morwenna is often said to mean “sea”, but it means “maiden”. If a meaning matters to you, look it up in a good name dictionary. Your Virgo will thank you for it one day.

First and middle names that work for a Virgo

A Virgo first and middle name pair can balance the sign’s two sides: the careful mind and the harvest field.

  • Cora Sapphire: the maiden and her stone.
  • Hugo Ephraim: the thoughtful mind and the fruitful year.
  • Spica Ruth: the grain star and the gleaner in the fields.
  • Demetrius Hugh: the harvest and the mind, one long and one short.
  • Agnes Juniper: an old saint’s name with a fresh green one.
  • Ezra Linus: help and flax, both quick to say.
  • Sita Rosemary: the furrow and the herb.
  • Malachi George: the messenger and the farmer.
  • Prudence Aster: good sense, with a September flower.

Gentle middle names for almost any Virgo first name: Ruth, Hazel, Sorrel, Aster, Hugh, Linus, Cora, Stella.

Siblings from other signs

You may want names for brothers and sisters that sound like they belong together, while each child keeps their own sign.

  • With a Leo sibling: Leo comes just before Virgo, and both share August. August and Augusta, and the summer poppy, sit well between them. See Leo baby names.
  • With a Gemini sibling: both signs are ruled by Mercury. A Virgo name of the mind next to a Gemini name of the voice makes a good pair. See Gemini baby names.
  • With a Libra sibling: Libra follows Virgo in September. The aster and the sapphire belong to the month whichever sign the child is. See Libra baby names.
  • With a Taurus or Capricorn sibling: the other earth signs. A spring, a harvest and a winter earth name can make a whole year of children. See Taurus baby names and Capricorn baby names.
  • With a Pisces sibling: Pisces sits opposite Virgo, across the sky. Where Virgo sorts, Pisces dreams. A clear Virgo name next to a soft water name balances the two well. See Pisces baby names.

For how the signs get along under one roof, read siblings by sign.

The chart is bigger than the Sun

Your baby’s Sun sign is only one of three placements that matter most in early childhood. Virgo might sit in one of the other two even if the birthday falls in a different month.

A Virgo Moon

The Moon shows what a child needs in order to feel safe. A Virgo Moon child needs to know what comes next, and calms down when the day runs in a clear order. If your baby has the Moon in Virgo, a Virgo middle name is a quiet way to honour that inner need. Ruth, Prudence, Hazel and Sorrel are good choices, since they are gentle, plain names with steady meanings, the kind this Moon finds restful.

Virgo rising

The rising sign is the one climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and it colours the first impression a child makes. A Virgo rising baby often looks alert, neat and watchful, taking in the details of every new face. A crisp Virgo first name (Cora, Hugo, Spica, Ezra) can suit this child even when the Sun is somewhere much louder. See the rising sign in children and Sun, Moon and rising.

Due near a cusp

The Sun moves from Leo into Virgo around 23 August, and out of Virgo into Libra around 23 September. The exact day shifts a little from year to year, so a due date near either edge leaves the sign open. Babies also have their own views about due dates. Born on the cusp explains how to find out for certain once the time of birth is known.

Due in mid to late August (Leo or Virgo): choose from the August names. August, Augusta and Poppy belong to the month and suit a Leo or a Virgo. For a name with both signs in it, try a Virgo first name with an August middle name, such as Cora August or Hugo August.

Due in mid to late September (Virgo or Libra): use the September names. Sapphire and Aster are both September through and through. Libra is ruled by Venus and Virgo by Mercury, but the sapphire and the starry aster are lovely for either child.

Use the shared season. Autumn words, such as the Japanese Aki in its autumn spelling, work for a late Virgo and an early Libra alike in the northern hemisphere.

When the baby is here and you have the time and place of birth, how to read a child’s birth chart will show you the whole picture.

A name made with care

Virgo children grow up noticing small things, and one day they will notice what their name means and where it came from. It is a lovely gift to be able to tell them the true story: the maiden with the ear of grain, the careful mind, the harvest field at the end of summer. Choose the name that sounds right in your home, check its meaning once, and then let it settle.

For the first birthday, see Virgo baby gifts and first birthday gifts by sign. For a baby with the Sun and the Moon both in the maiden, there is double Virgo.
