Libra baby names
Libra is the sign of the scales, ruled by Venus and born at the autumn equinox, when day and night weigh the same. These names carry fairness, peace, love and grace, and every one has been checked for where it really comes from.
A Libra baby is born between around 23 September and 22 October, under the scales. Venus rules the sign, the planet of love, beauty and getting on with people, and the season opens at the autumn equinox, the one day when light and dark are shared out evenly. A Libra name can hold any of that: fairness, peace, love, grace, the turning leaves, the evening star.
This is also the sign that finds choosing hard, so it seems only right to make the choice easier. Below are ten names to start with, then the threads that make a name feel Libra, then more than fifty names in groups, each with its true origin, its meaning and a plain reason it belongs.
Ten standout Libra names
- Justin (boy). From Latin, built on Justus, “just”. Fairness in a name almost everyone can spell.
- Irene (girl). Greek for “peace”. Old, gentle and quietly strong, like a Libra in a room that has gone tense.
- Vesper (any). Latin for the evening, and the evening star, which is Venus, Libra’s own planet.
- Paloma (girl). Spanish for “dove”. The dove has been Venus’s bird for thousands of years.
- Cosmo (boy). From Greek kosmos, “order”, and also the cosmos flower of October.
- Rosalie (girl). From Latin rosa, “rose”, the flower most often given to Libra.
- Septimus (boy). Latin for “seventh”. Libra is the seventh sign, and it begins in September.
- Bellamy (any). From Old French bel ami, “beautiful friend”. Venus beauty and Libra company together.
- Hannah (girl). Hebrew for “favour, grace”, and spelled the same forwards and backwards, perfectly balanced.
- Adil (boy). Arabic for “fair, honest, just”. Short, warm and exactly the sign.
What makes a name feel Libra
Libra has a small set of threads, and once you can see them you can test any name on your list. A name does not need all of them. One clear thread is plenty.
The scales
Libra is the only sign of the twelve drawn as an object rather than a living thing. Its figure is a pair of scales, and the scales stand for weighing, fairness, balance and justice. The figure has been tied to justice for a very long time: Themis, the Greek goddess of divine law, was often shown holding a pair of scales, and so, in Christian art, is the archangel Michael, weighing souls.
There is a lovely detail hidden in the sky here too. The two brightest stars of Libra still carry Arabic names that mean “the southern claw” and “the northern claw”, from a time when these stars were read as the claws of the scorpion next door. The scales grew out of them. Libra, you could say, took something sharp and made it fair.
So scales names are names of justice, fairness, law and right weighing.
Venus, the planet of love and beauty
Every sign has a ruling planet, which gives it its main character. Libra’s ruler is Venus, the brightest planet in our sky, named by the Romans after their goddess of love and beauty. Venus also rules Taurus, but the two signs use her differently. In Taurus she is about comfort and the senses. In Libra she turns outward, towards other people, and becomes the planet of company, kindness and harmony. You can read how that shows in a small child on the Libra child.
Venus names are names of love, of being beloved, of beauty, of grace. They also include her bird, the dove, and her other face as the evening star, the bright light that appears in the west after sunset. Friday belongs to Venus too: in French it is still vendredi, the day of Venus.
Air, the element
The twelve signs are grouped into four elements, fire, earth, air and water, and each element has its own way of moving through life. Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) live through thought, talk and connection between people. The four elements before the twelve signs explains the four in more depth.
Of the three, Libra is the air that moves between two people: conversation, company, the space in a room where everyone is getting on. So Libra’s air names are less about wind and more about peace, calm and harmony.
The autumn equinox
Each sign also has a modality, which tells you where it sits in its season. Cardinal signs open a season, fixed signs hold its middle and mutable signs close it. Libra is cardinal: it opens autumn in the northern hemisphere, on the day of the equinox, when night and day are close to equal length. The scales and the season agree. (Cardinal, fixed and mutable children has more on how the three modalities show up in a child.)
A Libra baby is born in late September or October: golden light, the first cold mornings, apples, falling leaves. In the southern hemisphere the same dates fall in spring, with blossom and lengthening days. Autumn names suit a northern Libra; a southern Libra might be better served by the peace, love and justice names, or by Aviva, which means “spring”.
Colours, stones and flowers
The colours most often given to Libra in astrology are soft pink and pale blue. The stone usually given is the opal, which shows a different colour from every angle, and the flower is the rose. Separate from the sign, the September birthstone is the sapphire and the October birthstone is the opal, so most Libra babies collect opal twice over.
The qualities
Libra is fair, kind, sociable, graceful, peace-making, and famous for weighing every option. This is the child who hands over the toy rather than have the fight, and who would rather do almost anything with somebody than alone. A Libra name often sounds smooth and even, with no harsh corners. Names that look good written down matter to this sign, because Venus cares about how things look.

The names
Each group has a short introduction and a table. Gender marks show how a name is mostly used now: girl, boy or any. Every meaning has been checked, and where a name’s history is more tangled than its sound suggests, the table says so.
Names of the scales: fairness and justice
These names go straight to the figure of the sign.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Justin (boy) | Latin, from Iustinus | From Justus, “just” | Fairness, the core of the scales, in a name that has been in English use for centuries. |
| Justine (girl) | French form of Iustina | From Justus, “just” | The same fairness with a French softness that Venus would approve of. |
| Justus (boy) | Latin | “Just, lawful, upright” | The plain Latin word, rare and upright, borne by several early saints. |
| Themis (girl) | Greek | “Law of nature, divine law, custom” | The Greek goddess of divine law, often shown blindfolded with the scales in her hand. |

Names of peace and calm
Libra is the peacemaker of the zodiac. A raised voice anywhere in the house can unsettle this child, and repair after a falling out matters enormously to them. These names carry the peace back.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Irene (girl) | Greek, from Eirene | “Peace” | The Greek goddess who stood for peace. A vintage name that has come quietly back. |
| Frida (girl) | Germanic, a short form of names with fridu | “Peace” | Peace in a short, bright, slightly bohemian name. |
| Solomon (boy) | Hebrew, from Shelomo | From shalom, “peace” | Peace, and the old king remembered for his wise judgements. Scales and peace in one. |
| Shanti (girl) | Sanskrit | “Quiet, peace, tranquillity” | The word repeated at the close of many Hindu prayers. Lovely as a middle name. |
| Paz (girl, sometimes any) | Spanish | “Peace” | One syllable, from Our Lady of Peace. Pairs beautifully with a longer first name. |
| Serena (girl) | Latin, from serenus | “Clear, tranquil, serene” | The calm sky after an argument has been mended. |
Venus names: love and the beloved
Venus is the planet of love, and many of the oldest names in Europe mean simply “loved”. These are the gentlest names on the page.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amy (girl) | English, from Old French Amée | “Beloved” | One of the simplest Venus names there is. |
| Amanda (girl) | Latin | “Lovable, worthy of love” | A Venus name with three easy syllables and Mandy or Ama as nicknames. |
| Mabel (girl) | English, a medieval form of Amabilis | From Latin amabilis, “lovable” | A vintage name, back in fashion, that is pure Venus underneath. |
| Amabel (girl) | English, a medieval form of Amabilis | “Lovable” | The longer, rarer sister of Mabel, with “belle” sitting at the end of it. |
| Carys (girl) | Welsh, from caru | “Love” | A modern Welsh name built on the verb to love. |
| Aiko (girl) | Japanese | “Love, affection” with “child” | A child of love, in two short syllables. (Other character combinations give other meanings, so check the writing if you use it.) |
| Cara (girl) | Italian and Irish | “Beloved” in Italian, “friend” in Irish | Love and friendship at once. Libra wants both. |
| Esmé (any, now mostly girl) | Old French | “Esteemed” or “loved” | Held in high regard, which is how Libra likes the people around them to feel. |
| Mila (girl) | Slavic, from milu | “Gracious, dear” | Short, warm, gracious. Easy in almost every language. |
Venus names: beauty, the evening star and the dove
The other faces of Venus: the goddess of beauty, the bright evening star and the white bird that flew with her.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belle (girl) | French word, and a short form of Isabella | “Beautiful” | The plain French word for beauty, a Venus word. |
| Callista (girl) | Greek, via Latin Callistus | “Most beautiful” | Beauty at full strength, with Callie as a nickname. |
| Freya (girl) | Old Norse, from Freyja | “Lady” | The Norse goddess of love and beauty, Venus’s northern counterpart. |
| Zohreh (girl) | Persian, borrowed from Arabic al-Zuhara | “Venus”, the planet, from a root meaning “to shine” | A name that is literally Libra’s ruling planet. |
| Vesper (any) | Latin, kin to the Greek Hesperos | “Evening”, and the evening star, which is Venus | Venus seen at dusk, low and bright in the west. |
| Harmony (girl) | English, from Greek harmonia | “Harmony” | In Greek legend Harmonia was the daughter of Venus’s Greek counterpart, Aphrodite. The word itself is everything a Libra hopes a room will be. |
| Paloma (girl) | Spanish | “Dove” | The dove is Venus’s bird and a sign of peace. Two Libra threads in one name. |
| Jonah (boy) | Hebrew, from Yona | “Dove” | The dove again, in a strong, familiar boy’s name. |
Names of the equinox, September and October
Libra opens autumn in the north. These names hold the season, the month and the number of the sign.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn (girl or any) | English, from Latin autumnus | The season | Libra is the sign that opens it. Best for northern hemisphere babies. |
| Septimus (boy) | Latin | “Seventh” | Libra is the seventh sign, and September, the month it begins in, takes its name from the Latin for seven. |
| Septima (girl) | Latin, feminine of Septimus | “Seventh” | The same number, in a rare and elegant girl’s form. |
| Aster (girl or any) | English, via Latin from Greek | “Star”, and the flower | The aster is the September birth flower, and its name means star. |
| Marigold (girl) | English | The flower, from “Mary” and “gold” | The October birth flower, golden like Libra’s autumn light. |
| Cosmo (boy) | Italian, from Greek Kosmas, from kosmos | “Order, world, universe” | Kosmos meant a beautiful order, and cosmos is also an October birth flower. Balance and the season together. |
Rose, pink, opal and sapphire
Libra’s flower, colour and stones. One honest note sits in this group: Rose does not come from the flower, though it has belonged to it for a very long time.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosalie (girl) | French, German and Dutch form of Rosalia | From Latin rosa, “rose” | The rose, Libra’s flower, in a name that really does come from it. |
| Rose (girl) | Norman French, from a Germanic name | Originally “famous type”, long tied to the flower | The rose has been read into this name for centuries, and it suits a Venus child perfectly as a first or a middle name. |
| Coral (girl) | English, via Latin from Greek | Coral, the sea stone, and the pinkish colour named after it | Libra’s soft pink, warmed up. |
| Opal (girl) | English, ultimately from Sanskrit upala | “Jewel” | The October birthstone and the stone most often given to Libra. A colour for every angle, like a child who can see every side. |
| Sapphire (girl) | English, from Greek sappheiros | The blue gemstone | The September birthstone, in Libra’s pale-to-deep blue. |
Balanced names: palindromes
The scales weigh both sides the same. A palindrome is a word that reads the same forwards and backwards, so these names are, quite literally, balanced. It is a small idea and parents of Libra babies love it.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hannah (girl) | Hebrew | “Favour, grace” | Balanced on the page and graceful in meaning. |
| Anna (girl) | Greek and Latin form of Hannah | “Favour, grace” | The shorter form, with the same mirror shape. |
| Ada (girl) | Germanic, short form of Adelaide and similar names | From adal, “noble” | Three letters, perfectly even. |
| Otto (boy) | German, from Audo | “Wealth, fortune” | A strong, cheerful boy’s palindrome. |
| Elle (girl) | English and French, short form of Eleanor, and French for “she” | “She” | Neat, symmetrical and very pretty written down. |
| Aviva (girl) | Hebrew, a form of Aviv | “Spring” | A balanced name with a meaning made for a southern hemisphere Libra, born in spring. |
Names of grace, gentleness and friendship
The Libra qualities themselves.
| Name | Origin | Meaning | Why it fits a Libra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace (girl) | English, from Latin gratia | “Grace” | The most Libra virtue name there is: kindness with good manners. |
| Clement (boy) | English, from Latin Clemens | “Merciful, gentle” | A fair judge who is also kind. Clem as a nickname. |
| Bellamy (any) | English surname, from Old French bel ami | “Beautiful friend” | Beauty and friendship, the two things Venus in Libra cares about most. |
Choosing well
There is a gentle joke in this section. Libra is the sign that weighs every option, and the parents of a Libra baby often find, for nine months, that they cannot decide either. The method below helps, and it borrows the oldest Libra trick of all.
Narrow it to two
Libra children choose far better from two options than from six, and so do tired parents. Each of you picks a short list of five. Swap lists. Cross off anything you cannot live with. When you are down to a handful, take them two at a time and keep the winner of each pair. You will reach a name faster than any amount of open discussion.
Say it aloud with the surname
Libra names tend to be smooth, so check that the first name does not slide straight into the surname (“Ada Adams” or “Paz Parker” may be more alliteration than you want). Say the full name quickly and slowly, and listen for accidental rhymes.
Meet the nickname early
Amabel will be Bel or Mabs. Septimus will be Sep. Callista will be Callie. Michael will be Mike or Mikey. Decide whether you are fond of the short form, because school will decide for you if you do not.
Check the initials and the page
Write the initials in a row and look for words. Then write the full name by hand, because Venus cares how things look and so, often, will your Libra.
Call it across a park
Stand at the gate and call the name as if they have run off with a friend, which a Libra child will. Names ending in a soft vowel (Irene, Paloma, Mila) carry well. Very soft names can disappear in a crowd; that is a reason to choose a clear middle name, not to give up the first.
First and middle names that balance
A Libra first and middle name can be a little set of scales: one name for each pan, weighing about the same. Try matching the number of syllables, or putting one name of love beside one of fairness.
- Irene Paloma: peace and the dove, three syllables each.
- Justin Rose: fairness on one side, the Libra flower on the other.
- Rosalie Grace: the rose and the virtue.
- Cosmo Jonah: order and the dove, two even names for a boy.
- Hannah Opal: the balanced palindrome and the October stone.
- Septimus Adil: the seventh sign and the Arabic word for fair.
- Mila Serena: dear and calm.
- Vesper Clement: the evening star and gentleness.
Gentle Libra middle names for almost any first name: Rose, Grace, Paz, Belle, Irene, Opal, Amy, Cara.
Brothers and sisters from other signs
If your Libra baby is joining a brother or sister, or you hope they will be, these links help a set of names sound like one family while each child keeps their own sign.
- With a Taurus sibling: Venus rules both signs. Love names (Amy, Mabel, Carys) or the rose make a natural bridge. See Taurus baby names.
- With an Aries sibling: Aries sits opposite Libra in the zodiac, Mars to Libra’s Venus. A strong Aries name beside a soft Libra one is a very old and good pairing. See Aries baby names.
- With a Gemini or Aquarius sibling: the other two air signs. Names of peace, breeze and conversation suit all three. See Gemini baby names and Aquarius baby names.
- With a Virgo sibling: Astraea links the two signs exactly, since she became the stars of Virgo and the scales are hers. See Virgo baby names.
- With a Scorpio sibling: Scorpio starts the day after Libra ends, and Libra’s stars were once Scorpio’s claws. See Scorpio baby names.
For how the signs share a home, read siblings by sign.
The chart is bigger than the Sun
A Sun sign is only the first layer. Two other placements matter a great deal in a baby’s chart, and either can be Libra even when the Sun sits in another sign.
A Libra Moon
The Moon shows what a child needs to feel safe. A Libra Moon child needs peace between the people around them, and fairness put right when something goes wrong. For a baby with the Moon in Libra and the Sun elsewhere, a peace name makes a lovely middle name: Irene, Shanti, Serena, Paz or Frida. It names the quiet need under the surface.
Libra rising
The rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It shapes how a child first meets people, and Libra rising babies are often the ones strangers stop to smile at, and who smile straight back. A first name with Venus grace (Belle, Bellamy, Grace, Mila) can suit a Libra rising child even if the Sun is in a very different sign. The rising sign in children explains what it shows, and Sun, Moon and rising puts the three together.
If the baby is due near a cusp
The Sun moves from Virgo into Libra around 23 September, and from Libra into Scorpio around 23 October. That moment moves by about a day from year to year, and the full reason is in born on the cusp. Babies are not famous for arriving on the date in the notes either.
If you are due within a week or so of either edge, build a shortlist that works on both sides.
Due in mid to late September (Virgo or Libra): Astraea is the name for this. She is the goddess of justice who became the stars of Virgo, and she holds Libra’s scales. Sapphire, the September stone, and Aster, the September flower, work on both sides of the line. So does Septimus or Septima, since both signs share the month.
Due in mid to late October (Libra or Scorpio): Harmony is a beautiful bridge. In Greek legend Harmonia was the daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, the Greek counterparts of Venus and Mars, and Mars is Scorpio’s traditional ruler, so the name carries both parents. Opal, the October stone, Marigold and Autumn suit both signs too.
Keep one name from the season or element. If you want something only Libra, pair a scales or Venus name with a season middle name. Justin Autumn or Paloma Opal still makes sense if your Libra decides at the last moment to be a Scorpio.
Once the baby has arrived and you know the time and place, you can settle it properly. Until then, a shortlist that bends is the kindest plan.
A name to share
Libra is a sign that does almost nothing alone, and a name is, in the end, something a child shares: with you, with friends, with everyone who calls it across a room. Whatever you choose, pick a name that sounds kind in your voice, because this child will listen to the tone of it long before they understand the word.
For the first year and beyond, Libra baby gifts and first birthday gifts by sign have ideas, and double Libra is there for the baby with the Sun and the Moon both in the scales.
