Taurus baby gifts and keepsakes
A Taurus baby is ruled by Venus and meets the world through the senses. The right present is good to touch, slow to wear out and easy to love for years. Here is what the bull stands for, and the gifts and keepsakes that carry it.
The best gift for a Taurus baby is one that feels good in the hand today and still feels good in five years. Taurus is an earth sign ruled by Venus, the planet of comfort, beauty and pleasure, and a Taurus baby takes in the world through touch, taste, sound and warmth. Soft, solid, natural and well made will always beat clever, loud and new.
Taurus is also the sign of keeping. The bull does not want a hundred things. It chooses a few and stays loyal to them. So the winning gift is rarely the most exciting parcel at the shower. It is the blanket still being dragged round the house at three, or the wooden box that still holds the hospital bracelet at thirty.
Eight gifts that suit a Taurus baby
- A comfort blanket in a lovely natural fabric. Texture is how this sign says yes or no, and Taurus attaches deeply to one good thing.
- A soft toy bull of real quality. The sign’s own animal, made to be held for years rather than admired for a week.
- A set of solid wooden blocks. Weight in the hand, smooth edges, and something to come back to again and again.
- A music box with one gentle tune. Venus rules the ear as well as the eye, and Taurus loves the same song played the same way.
- A copper or clay handprint keepsake. Copper is the metal of Venus, and a printed hand is the most physical memory there is.
- A Taurus constellation print. The bull’s orange eye and the little cluster of stars on its shoulder look beautiful in ink.
- A rose bush or fruit tree planted for the birth. A living gift from the sign of gardens and good things to eat.
- A home-cooked meal for the parents. Taurus homes run on food, and a new family needs feeding.
What the bull stands for, if you are choosing a gift
Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac. Aries, the first, is the rush of a new start. Taurus is what comes after: the moment you stop running and enjoy what has grown. The bull is strong, calm, patient and very hard to move once it has decided where it stands. In a small child that shows up as a steady, loyal, sensory temperament, which you can read in full in the Taurus child.
Three astrology words explain most of this sign, and each one points straight at a kind of gift.
- Element: earth. The four elements are the oldest layer of astrology. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) live through the real, physical world: things you can hold, routines you can count on. Earth likes gifts with weight and use. The four elements guide explains the whole family.
- Modality: fixed. Each sign also has a way of moving. Cardinal signs start things, mutable signs change things and fixed signs hold things steady. Taurus is the fixed earth sign, the one that keeps. A fixed sign loves a gift that lasts. More in cardinal, fixed and mutable children.
- Ruler: Venus. Every sign has a ruling planet that colours it. Venus is the planet of love, beauty and the good things of the body: soft cloth, sweet music, ripe fruit, a warm room. A Taurus gift should be pleasant to touch and pleasant to look at, in that order.
The Taurus glyph
The glyph is the small written symbol for the sign. The Taurus glyph is a circle with a curved crescent sitting on top of it, like a cup resting on a ball. It draws the head of the bull with its horns curving upwards. Astrologers also read the crescent as the Moon, and it is a fitting picture: the Moon is exalted in Taurus, which means it is at its most comfortable there. If you are designing a card or a print on a computer, the symbol is listed in Unicode as U+2649.
The Taurus reference table
| What | For Taurus |
|---|---|
| Dates | around 20 April to 20 May |
| Figure | the bull |
| Glyph | a circle with a crescent of horns on top |
| Element | earth |
| Modality | fixed |
| Ruling planet | Venus |
| Colours | soft green, rose pink, cream, warm earth browns |
| Zodiac stones | emerald, rose quartz, jade |
| Calendar birthstones | diamond (April), emerald (May) |
| Metal | copper |
| Flowers | rose, violet, poppy |
| Animal | the bull, and by extension the gentle farm cow |
Two lists of stones get mixed up a lot, so it helps to keep them apart. The zodiac stones are the ones astrology gives to the sign itself: for Taurus, the green of emerald and jade and the pink of rose quartz, the two colours of Venus. The calendar birthstones belong to the month on the calendar, and the modern list used by jewellers gives diamond for April and emerald for May. A Taurus baby born between around 20 and 30 April has diamond as the month stone. A Taurus baby born in May has emerald, which sits on both lists at once and makes a very neat keepsake stone.
Copper is the old metal of Venus. Its name even comes, through Latin, from the island of Cyprus, a place long linked with the goddess Venus. It is a warm, rosy metal that deepens in colour over the years, which suits a sign that likes things to grow more loved with age.
Gifts by moment
At the baby shower, before anyone knows the sign for sure
A due date is an estimate, and babies keep their own calendar. A baby due in early May is very likely a Taurus. A baby due near 20 April could arrive as an Aries, and one due near 20 May could arrive as a Gemini. If the due date sits within a week or two of either edge, choose a gift that works on both sides or one that suits the whole earth element.
Some safe choices for the shower:
- A gift for the senses, not the sign. A really good blanket, a soft toy in natural fabric or a set of wooden blocks suits any baby, and suits a Taurus perfectly.
- An earth gift. A small potted plant for the parents’ windowsill, a wooden toy, a basket in natural willow. Earth gifts sit happily with Taurus and with its earth cousins.
- A promise card. Write in the card that a star print or glyph keepsake will follow once the baby has arrived and the birth time is known. The promise is a gift too, and it lets you get the details right.
If the baby does land on the border, the born on the cusp guide explains how to tell which side of the line the Sun was on. Neighbouring pages for the other side: Aries baby gifts and Gemini baby gifts.
Newborn and naming day
Now the sign is sure, and you can give something that carries it openly. The newborn weeks and a naming day or welcoming party are the time for keepsakes rather than toys.
- A birth-sky print. With the date, time and place of birth, an artist can draw the sky exactly as it was. More on this below.
- An engraved keepsake spoon or cup in silver or copper, with the name, the birth date and the small Taurus glyph. A Venus sign that loves good food deserves a lovely spoon, even if it lives in a cabinet.
- A name keepsake. If the family is still choosing, or has chosen a name with a story, the Taurus baby names guide has names that suit the bull, and a framed name with its meaning makes a quiet, lasting present.
- A welcome blanket with the name stitched in one corner. Choose the softest natural fabric you can find. A Taurus child will know the difference.
First birthday
A first birthday is the moment many families first see the Taurus temperament clearly: the favourite song, the loyal toy, the slow and serious enjoyment of cake. For the main kinds of present that suit each sign at one year old, see first birthday gifts by sign, which also explains the clever trick of buying a second identical comfort object. For the party itself, the earth sign birthday party guide covers the slow pace and the cake moment Taurus loves.
Something those two guides do not cover: the birthday plate. Buy one beautiful plate, mug or bowl, and use it only on the birthday, every year. Taurus is the sign of things done the same way, and a plate that comes out once a year becomes part of what makes it feel like their day. A Taurus child soon checks that it is there before looking at the presents.
The toddler years
Between one and four, a Taurus child grows into the full Venus nature: hands in the soil, nose in the flowers, opinions about the jam. Gifts that suit this stretch:
- A child-sized garden set. A small watering can, a sturdy trowel, a pot with their name on it and seeds that come up fast.
- A play kitchen or a tea set. Venus is the planet of the host, and Taurus loves the ritual of serving and sharing food, even pretend food.
- A small wooden cart or wheelbarrow for carrying things about. The bull likes to move heavy things slowly and with purpose.
- A big, plain box of real materials: wooden spoons, fabric squares in different textures, chunky pegs. Taurus will play with the feel of things for longer than you would guess.
Gifts by kind
Nursery art: constellation, glyph or birth sky
There are three quite different kinds of zodiac print, and each needs different information.
| What it shows | What you need to know | |
|---|---|---|
| Constellation print | the star pattern of Taurus in the night sky | only the sign |
| Glyph print | the written symbol, often with the name and date | only the sign |
| Birth-sky print | the whole sky at the moment of birth: Sun, Moon, rising sign and planets | date, exact time and place of birth |
A constellation print of Taurus is one of the prettiest in the zodiac. The bull’s face is a V of stars called the Hyades, its eye is the bright orange star Aldebaran, and on its shoulder sits the tight little cluster of the Pleiades. Aldebaran’s name comes from Arabic and means “the follower”, because it seems to follow the Pleiades across the sky. That makes a lovely line to write on the back of the frame.
A glyph print is simpler and more modern: the circle and horns, perhaps in copper or soft green ink on cream paper, with the child’s name underneath. It suits a calm room and a fixed sign that likes a clean, settled look.
A birth-sky print is the most personal of the three, and it needs the most care. The Moon moves into a new sign about every two and a half days, so the date matters. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and on where in the world the baby was born, so the exact time matters too. Get the time from the parents, not from memory. A Taurus Sun with a Taurus Moon and a Taurus rising reads very differently from a Taurus Sun with a Gemini Moon, and the print will show which child this is. The Sun, Moon and rising guide explains what the three points mean, and if all of them turn out to fall in the bull, double Taurus is the page to give the parents.
Whichever you choose, frame it in plain wood and keep the colours warm. Taurus rooms should feel like a deep breath.
Personalised keepsakes
Taurus is the sign of things that last, so personalised keepsakes suit it better than almost any other sign. Choose natural materials that age well: solid wood, linen, copper, clay, good paper.
- A wooden keepsake box with the name and glyph carved in the lid.
- A small copper plaque with the full birth details: name, date, time, place and weight.
- A clay print of a hand or foot, made at a few weeks old and fired to keep.
- A linen bag, embroidered with the name, to hold the first pair of shoes when they are outgrown.
A memory box or time capsule letter
A memory box suits Taurus because this child will one day love holding the actual things: the tiny hat, the hospital band, the first card. Add a few things for the senses, the Taurus way. A sealed frame with a pressed flower from the week of birth. The words of the song you sang most. The name of the first meal the family cooked at home together.
A time capsule letter, to be opened at eighteen or twenty-one, is a gift any adult in the family can give. For a Taurus child, write it through the senses. What the weather was like. What was flowering. In the northern hemisphere, Taurus babies arrive in late spring, among blossom and the first warm evenings; in the southern hemisphere they arrive in mid autumn, with falling leaves and the first fires of the year. Either way, write down the smell of the season. Some prompts that work well:
- What the house smelled like in the first week.
- The first thing that made the baby go quiet and listen.
- The blanket, toy or song the baby chose before anyone else did.
- What everyone ate at the welcome meal.
Clothing with the glyph
Taurus is the sign most likely to reject clothes on feel alone, so the fabric matters more than the design. Choose soft natural fibres, flat seams and no scratchy labels. A glyph embroidered in a small size on the chest of a cardigan, or stitched in one corner of a sleepsuit, feels much nicer than a stiff printed transfer. Buy a size or two ahead, since a good piece will be worn for a long time and handed down after.
Toys and books that suit a Taurus
Choose toys a Taurus child can return to for years rather than toys that do one trick.
- Weighty wooden toys: blocks, stacking rings, a simple shape sorter, animals carved from solid wood.
- Toys for carrying and filling: a basket, a cart, a set of nesting bowls.
- Soft toys of real quality, especially a bull, a cow or a lamb, with a texture worth stroking.
For books, think about the senses and about rhythm.
- Touch-and-feel books with a different texture on every page.
- Cloth books that can be squashed, held and loved hard.
- Books with a repeating line that comes back on every page, so the child can wait for it and join in.
- Books about farms, gardens, food and bedtime, the Taurus subjects: the cow in the field, the soup on the stove, the long, slow walk home.
Experiences
An experience suits a Venus sign when it is full of good sensations and is not rushed.
- A morning at a farm to see the cows and calves, with time to stand and watch rather than tick off every animal.
- A picnic in a meadow or orchard in the birthday season, with a proper blanket and good food.
- A music session where the baby can hear real instruments played close by. Venus loves a voice and a melody.
- A strawberry-picking morning once they are walking, which combines the three Taurus loves: being outside, using the hands and eating.
A gift for the parents of a Taurus baby
Parents of a Taurus baby learn quickly that their child likes things slow, the same and comfortable. The best gift for them supports that rhythm.
- Food. A home-cooked meal, a box of good bread and soup, a freezer filled with dishes they only need to warm.
- Time without hurry. An offer to walk the baby for an hour so the parents can eat a meal sitting down, slowly, together.
- A soft throw for the sofa where the long Taurus cuddles happen. This one is for the grown-ups.
- A second copy of whatever the baby loves most, once it is clear what that is.
If one of the parents is an earth sign too, the house may already run like clockwork, and the Taurus parent page and the wider parents section show how each parent sign meets this child.
What to write in the card
Short, warm, and in the Venus spirit. Copy any of these.
- “Welcome, little bull. May your blankets be soft, your days be warm and your favourite things always within reach.”
- “Born under Venus. Here is to a life full of good food, kind arms and beautiful things.”
- “Take your time, little one. Everything worth having will wait for you.”
- “For the newest Taurus: a steady heart, a strong will and a lap always nearby.”
- “May you always have a garden, a song you love and someone to share the last slice with.”
- “With the Pleiades on your shoulder and Aldebaran for an eye, welcome to the world, slowly and beautifully.”
- “Happy first birthday to our favourite little bull. Same cake next year? We thought so.”
- “To the parents of a Taurus: the waiting is worth it, and the cuddles never end.”
What to avoid
- Toys that do everything at once. Flashing lights, ten sounds and a new mode every minute go against a sign that likes one good thing done well.
- Scratchy or stiff clothes. Formal outfits, tight collars, sequins and rough wool will be refused, often loudly, and the refusal is about comfort, not manners.
- Surprise swaps. Do not “upgrade” a battered comfort toy or replace a loved object with a newer version. Taurus notices, and it feels like a loss.
- A pile of small, cheap gifts. One well-made present will be loved for years. Ten throwaway ones will be ignored, and this sign can tell the difference.
- Gifts that demand speed. Timed games and race-against-the-clock toys come later, if ever. The bull likes to finish.
One calm safety line, said once: stones, crystals, copper pieces, jewellery, small decorative items, cushions and decorative blankets are keepsakes for a shelf or a box, not for the cot or the mouth, and real plants and pressed flowers belong out of reach too.
A gift that stays
A Taurus child keeps things. Not everything, but the right things, for a very long time. Whatever you give, choose it as if it will still be in the house when this baby is grown, because with the bull there is every chance it will be. For the whole earth family, see the zodiac baby gifts hub, where Virgo and Capricorn have pages of their own.
