Sagittarius baby gifts and keepsakes

Sagittarius is the archer, ruled by Jupiter, and a Sagittarius baby is already looking past you at the open door. The best gifts point outwards: maps, journeys, big skies and the freedom to go and see.

A Sagittarius baby is born under the sign of the archer, and an archer always looks at something far away. These are the babies who travel well, smile at strangers and wriggle out of every strap you fasten. Jupiter, the largest planet, rules them, and Jupiter wants more: more space, more sky, more of the world. A gift for this child works when it opens a door rather than closes one.

So look for gifts that go somewhere, show somewhere or help the family get out more. Maps, journeys, books about far places, keepsakes that collect adventures. And keep them light, because this is not a sign for heavy, precious things that must be guarded. The best Sagittarius gift is the one that comes along on the trip.

The best gifts for a Sagittarius baby, at a glance

  1. A world map print with the birthplace marked. Sagittarius is the traveller of the zodiac, and a map says the whole world is theirs to explore.
  2. An adventure book. A keepsake journal that records every new place the child visits, from the first park to the first sea.
  3. A Sagittarius star print showing the Teapot. The archer’s brightest stars form a teapot shape whose spout points towards the centre of our galaxy.
  4. A pull-along wagon for the toddler years. Every expedition needs supplies, and a Sagittarius toddler will want to take theirs.
  5. A turquoise or topaz keepsake. Both are Sagittarius stones, and both are calendar birthstones in the Sagittarius weeks.
  6. A pewter keepsake. Pewter is mostly tin, and tin is the metal of Jupiter.
  7. Books about journeys and animals of the world. For the child whose first question will be “where does that road go?”
  8. A ticket to somewhere new. A day out, a train ride, a first trip to the sea, given as a gift in itself.

What Sagittarius means, for the person choosing the gift

A handful of facts about the sign will make any gift feel right.

The figure is the archer. Sagittarius is usually drawn as a centaur, half horse and half archer, with a bow drawn and an arrow aimed at the sky. The horse gives speed and the love of open ground. The arrow gives aim: a target far away and the wish to reach it. A Sagittarius baby has both, the restless legs and the eyes on the horizon.

The glyph is the arrow. The Sagittarius symbol is an arrow pointing up and to the right, with a short bar crossing its shaft. It is the simplest glyph in the zodiac to recognise, and it says exactly what the sign is about: aim high, aim far, and let go. It is part of the standard Unicode list of computer characters (code U+2650), so it can be printed, stitched or engraved cleanly.

The element is fire. Astrology sorts the twelve signs into four elements. Fire signs are warm, lively and quick to act. Sagittarius shares fire with Aries and Leo, but its fire is the roaming kind, a campfire that moves on each morning. See the four elements before the twelve signs for how this plays out.

The modality is mutable. Each sign has a modality, its way of moving. Cardinal signs begin, fixed signs hold, and mutable signs adapt. Sagittarius is mutable fire, which makes it flexible, easy-going about change and happiest when life does not stay the same for long. More in cardinal, fixed and mutable children.

The ruler is Jupiter. The ruling planet lends a sign its character. Jupiter is the planet of growth, generosity, good luck and big questions. It gives the Sagittarius child their cheerfulness, their honesty and their early hunger to know why. Jupiter is also the biggest planet in our solar system, which feels right for a child who always wants a bigger world.

Zodiac stone or birthstone: which one to give

People often treat these as one list. They are two.

The calendar birthstone depends only on the month of birth. Sagittarius runs from around 22 November to around 21 December, so a Sagittarius baby has either a November birthstone, topaz or citrine, or a December one: tanzanite, turquoise or zircon.

The zodiac stone depends on the sign. Astrology gives Sagittarius the blue and purple stones of Jupiter: turquoise, lapis lazuli and amethyst, and topaz for its warmth.

The good news is that the two lists cross. A November Sagittarius can have topaz, which is on both lists. A December Sagittarius can have turquoise, which is on both lists too. Turquoise is a particularly happy choice: astrology reads it as a stone for travellers, and few signs love a journey more.

The sign’s plants also have a long history. The seventeenth-century English herbalist Nicholas Culpeper placed the dandelion under Jupiter, and a dandelion clock blown into the wind is about as Sagittarius as a plant can be: hundreds of tiny travellers, all leaving at once.

Gifts by moment

Before the birth and at the baby shower

The sign is only fixed once the baby is born, so a zodiac gift bought months ahead is a gamble. A baby due on 7 December will very likely be a Sagittarius. One due on 23 November could arrive as a Scorpio, and one due around 20 December could just as easily turn out to be a Capricorn. If the due date is close to either edge, born on the cusp explains what to look for.

Shower gifts that work whatever happens:

  • A world map, unmarked. Any baby can have the world on their wall. Mark the birthplace after the birth, with a star or a pin.
  • A winter sky gift. In the northern half of the world, Sagittarius runs through the darkest weeks before the winter solstice, so a gift of stars, lanterns and night skies suits a late Scorpio, any Sagittarius and an early Capricorn alike. In the southern half of the world, the same weeks are the start of summer, and a gift of long light evenings tells the same story the other way round.
  • A blank adventure book. It fits any child. If this one is a Sagittarius, it will fill faster than any other.
  • A fire element gift. If the parents expect one of the fire signs, warm colours and sun or star motifs suit Aries, Leo and Sagittarius together.

Keep the arrow, the archer and anything engraved until the birth date is known.

Newborn days and the naming day

Once the baby is here, mark the arrival with the sign’s own symbols. A small engraved keepsake with the name, the arrow glyph and the birth date is the classic. In pewter it carries Jupiter’s metal. In silver it shines. Either way, choose something that could travel: a little frame that fits in a bag, a keepsake that can come along to the grandparents’ house.

A Sagittarius naming day gift with real meaning is a birth place keepsake: the name of the town, the date and the map coordinates of the place of birth, printed or engraved together. It records the first point on a life that will cover a lot of ground.

For the name itself, and what it carries, see Sagittarius baby names.

The first birthday

A Sagittarius first birthday often lands close to the busiest weeks of the year. Babies born in December especially can find their birthday folded into the holidays. Give them a birthday of their own. Wrap the present in birthday paper, not festive paper. Keep the birthday gift separate from any December gift. A Sagittarius child cares about fairness, and in a few years they will notice.

For the present, think about the year ahead, when this child will start to walk away from you on purpose. Toys that go outside and go somewhere suit them: a pull-along wagon, a big ball, a first trip to a new park. The guide to first birthday gifts by sign explains why outdoor presents suit Sagittarius so well. For the party, the trick is a small expedition with a clear ending, described in a birthday party for a Sagittarius child.

A good keepsake for this birthday is a one-year map: every place the child has been in their first year, drawn on one page. For a Sagittarius, it is often a surprisingly long list.

The toddler years

From one to three, a Sagittarius child runs towards whatever is interesting and assumes you are following. Gifts for these years should go with them.

A small backpack of their own, packed for “an adventure”, is a big hit. So is a pop-up tent or a play tunnel indoors, which turns the living room into a wilderness. Toys that roll, pull and carry suit the explorer. As language arrives, the questions start, often big ones about life, death, God and the sky, and a few simple picture books that answer “why” questions honestly make a thoughtful gift for this stage.

Gifts by kind

Nursery art: constellation, glyph or birth sky

What is a constellation print? It shows the stars of Sagittarius joined into a figure. It needs only the sign. The archer is a large pattern, but its brightest stars make an easy shape known as the Teapot, with a lid, a handle and a spout. The spout points towards the centre of our galaxy, and the bright band of the Milky Way passes right beside it, so on a dark night away from city lights the teapot seems to be letting off steam. A print that shows the Teapot and a soft band of the Milky Way is a lovely way to give a Sagittarius baby the whole galaxy at once.

What is a glyph print? It shows the Sagittarius arrow on its own. Again, it needs only the sign. The arrow is strong and simple, and it works well in deep blue or purple on a pale wall. Some families like the arrow drawn very large, pointing up and out towards a window. It suits the child.

What is a birth-sky print? It is a chart wheel, drawn for the moment of birth. It shows the Sun in Sagittarius, and also where the Moon was and which sign was rising over the eastern horizon. Of the three kinds, this is the only one that belongs to this child alone. It needs the date, the exact time and the place of birth. The Moon changes sign about every two to three days, and the rising sign moves on roughly every two hours, so the time matters. To understand what the print shows, read sun, moon and rising and how to read a child’s birth chart.

Which one to choose? If you know the birth time, the birth-sky print is the most personal. If you do not, the Teapot print with the Milky Way is the most beautiful, and the map print with the birthplace marked is the most Sagittarius of all.

Personalised keepsakes

Personalise with places. The child’s name with the birth town and its coordinates. A small globe for the shelf with a star where they were born. A name print in the shape of a road sign or a compass. Sagittarius cares less about fine materials than about meaning and a bit of humour, so a keepsake with a joke or a story in it will be loved. Make sure it is easy to carry. This child’s things tend to end up in other rooms, other houses and other countries.

A memory box or a time capsule letter

For Sagittarius, make the memory box a travel trunk. A small suitcase works well. Inside go the ticket stubs, the first beach pebble, the postcard from the grandparents’ house, the map of the first year, a photo from every new place. Sagittarius children love to remember journeys, and a trunk full of them is a story they can unpack again and again.

The letter can be marked: “For the day you set off somewhere far on your own.” Write about the baby who could not bear to be strapped in, who smiled at every stranger, who always wanted to see round the next corner. Tell them you hoped they would go far, and that the door home is always open.

Clothes with the glyph

Choose clothes for movement. The Sagittarius baby is the escape artist of the zodiac, and stiff collars, tight waistbands and fussy fastenings are a fight nobody needs. Soft, stretchy, easy pieces with the arrow glyph in purple or deep blue suit them best. A warm hat with a small arrow on it is perfect for the winter-born Sagittarius in the north, who will want to be outside regardless of the weather.

Toys and books that suit the Sagittarius temperament

Sagittarius plays to explore, to roam and to find out what is over there. The site’s guide to how each sign plays and the ideas in open-ended afternoons by sign go further. For a Sagittarius baby or toddler, look for:

  • Toys that go places. Pull-along wagons, push trucks, a ball for the park, anything that rolls.
  • Toys that make a new world. Pop-up tents, play tunnels, a big cardboard box with a door cut in it.
  • Animals from far away. Figures of animals from other continents, a jungle set, an ocean set, a desert set.
  • Things that look outwards. A toddler-sized magnifying glass for the garden, binoculars made from cardboard tubes, a picture globe.

For books, choose stories about journeys: a road, a river, a long walk, a boat that sails off the page. Lift-the-flap books that show what is behind the door, around the corner or under the sea suit this curious sign. Funny books are a must. Sagittarius has a big laugh, even as a baby. And keep a book or two of simple answers to big questions on the shelf. This child will ask them early.

Experiences

For a Sagittarius child, an experience is often the best gift of all. Some ideas:

  • A day trip to somewhere the family has never been: a new beach, a new town, a forest.
  • A first train ride, with nothing to do but look out of the window.
  • A morning at a nature reserve, a city farm or a wildlife park with lots of open space.
  • A family stargazing night around August or September. In the weeks around a Sagittarius birthday, the archer’s stars sit close to the Sun and cannot be seen at night. They are best seen in the evening around August and September: low in the south for watchers in the northern half of the world, where it is late summer, and high overhead in the southern half, where it is the end of winter. A card promising “we will find your Teapot together when it comes back” is a gift that keeps for months.

Only promise a trip you will keep. Sagittarius forgives almost anything except a promised outing that quietly never happens.

A gift for the parents of a Sagittarius baby

The parents of a Sagittarius baby will spend a lot of time out of the house, and some of it running. Practical gifts that make going out easier land well: a big, light changing bag, a warm footmuff for the pushchair for winter-born babies, a picnic blanket that folds small, a map of family-friendly walks near home. Offer to come on an outing with them. Another pair of hands at the far end of the park is worth more than most presents.

For something more personal, send the parents to their own sign’s reading with a Sagittarius child on the parent pages. A fellow traveller will enjoy the Sagittarius parent. The full reading of the child is at the Sagittarius child.

What to write in the card

Sagittarius likes a card with some sky in it and a smile. Copy any of these.

  • “Welcome, little archer. Aim high. We will always be here when you come back.”
  • “The whole world just got a new explorer. Welcome to the first day of the journey.”
  • “Born under lucky Jupiter. May every road you take turn out to be a good one.”
  • “To the newest Sagittarius: may your sky be wide and your questions never run out.”
  • “You came in the season of long nights, and you brought the light with you.”
  • “One year old and already heading for the door. Happy birthday, little traveller.” (for a first birthday)
  • “To the parents of a Sagittarius: good shoes, a full bag and a door that is always open.”

What to avoid

Some gifts work against the archer.

  • Anything that holds them in. Outfits with many layers and fiddly fastenings, a costume that takes ten minutes to put on, a sit-still toy that only works in one spot.
  • Precious things that must be guarded. A fine christening gown or a fragile ornament is a lovely keepsake, but it belongs in the trunk, not in daily life. Sagittarius is not careful by nature and should not have to be.
  • Toys with too many rules. A game that only works one way, with an adult saying “no, not like that”, will frustrate a child who wants to try it their own way.
  • Promises that are not kept. A voucher for an outing that never happens does more harm than no voucher at all.
  • Gifts that keep them indoors for hours. A big indoor toy is fine, but if every present on the table needs the house, add one that needs the park.

A single calm note on safety. Stones, crystals, jewellery, small decorative pieces, cushions and decorative blankets are keepsakes for a shelf or a box, never for the cot or the mouth.

If you know the Moon or the rising sign

The Sun sign tells you who the child is in daylight. The Moon sign tells you what they need when they are tired, and it can make a good gift into the perfect one.

A Sagittarius Sun with a home-loving Moon, such as Cancer or Taurus, wants to roam and then come back to something very familiar. A travel-sized comfort object, or a book read the same way every night, sits well beside the map. With a careful earth Moon like Virgo or Capricorn, a gift that adds a little order to the adventure suits them: a tidy backpack with a pocket for everything. With an air Moon, add words and people: a book of questions, a game for two. With a fire Moon, the whole chart is restless and bright, and an experience gift will beat any object.

Read more in the Sagittarius Moon child and on the Moon signs page. If the Sun and Moon are both in Sagittarius, see double Sagittarius.

A gift that opens the door

Every good Sagittarius gift says the same thing in a different way: the world is big, and you are welcome in it. A map, a trunk, a train ride, an arrow on the wall. Give this child room, give them the reason behind the rule, and give them somewhere new to go. They will thank you with a laugh, a question you cannot answer, and the sight of their back as they run off to see what is next.
