The zodiac signs as toddlers
Two to three is the age when a sign stops whispering and starts shouting. Here are all twelve toddlers: the word they say most, the move they make, what sets them off and what brings them back to you.
Every toddler wants more than they can do. That is what being two is. But each sign wants something different, and so each sign falls over the gap in its own way. An Aries toddler crashes into it at full speed. A Taurus toddler sits down in front of it and refuses to move. A Pisces toddler turns it into a story and goes to live inside the story.
This is the age when the Sun sign comes out loudest. In the first year a baby is mostly need, and the Moon sign does most of the talking. By two and three, the child has legs, opinions and about two hundred words, and the Sun has something to work with. You can see the sign in what they reach for, what they shout about and what makes them stop shouting.
Here are the twelve, quickly, and then one by one.
| Sign | Favourite word | Signature move | Meltdown trigger | What wins them back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | “Go.” | Running before the shoes are on | Being stopped mid run | A race they can win |
| Taurus | “Again.” | Going heavy, like a sack of flour | The quiet swap of a cup or a song | The right thing, back, and time |
| Gemini | “What’s that?” | Talking to the whole bus queue | Nothing new to look at | Something new, and a real answer |
| Cancer | “Up.” | Holding on to your leg | A rushed goodbye | Your lap and the usual words |
| Leo | “Watch.” | The show on the sofa | Being laughed at when serious | An audience that stays |
| Virgo | “Fix it.” | Lining things up | The broken biscuit | A job with a finish |
| Libra | “You too.” | Sharing a bite of everything | Shouting in the house | Company and two choices |
| Scorpio | “Mine.” | The long stare from behind your knee | A forced hug | The truth, and space |
| Sagittarius | “Outside.” | The bolt for the far gate | The car seat on a long trip | An open door |
| Capricorn | “I’m busy.” | Carrying the heaviest bag | Failing in front of people | A real job, done in private |
| Aquarius | “Why not?” | Using the colander as a hat | “Because I said so” | A proper reason |
| Pisces | “Pretend.” | Being a cat for a week | Being hurried out of a game | Water, low light, a story |
If your toddler is easy to find in that table, good. If they are half in one row and half in another, read on to the end, because the Sun is only one of three voices in a small child’s chart.
Aries: the toddler who goes first
Favourite word: “Go.” Sometimes “me first”, which is the same word in a coat.
Signature move: The launch. An Aries toddler is out of the door before the shoes are on, up the climbing frame before you have found the bench, and halfway down the slide before the child in front has moved. Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of action, and the body of this child acts first and checks later. You will know the sound of their feet on the stairs better than you know your own name.
Meltdown trigger: Being stopped. Not being told no, exactly, but being held still at the very second they decided to move. The pushchair strap, the hand that catches the hood, the “wait for me” at the kerb. The Aries meltdown is sudden and huge, a red face and a straight back, and it is aimed at the stopping rather than at you.
What wins them back: A race they can win. “Bet you can’t get to the gate before I count five.” The same energy that was fighting the stop now has somewhere to go. Then the best news of all: Aries does not keep the grudge. Two minutes after the storm, they are showing you a stick.
A small scene: the family is leaving the park. Another child might need a five minute warning. The Aries toddler needs a starting line. Say “ready, steady” and they are already running toward the car.
Taurus: the toddler who stays put
Favourite word: “Again.” The same song, the same book, the same walk past the same dog. Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of pleasure, and a good thing is worth having twice. And then twenty times.
Signature move: Going heavy. You pick up a Taurus toddler who does not want to leave, and somehow they weigh twice what they weighed this morning. Every bone goes soft. This is not a trick. It is how a fixed earth sign says no: by becoming part of the floor. (“Fixed” is the modality, the way a sign moves, and fixed signs hold on.)
Meltdown trigger: The secret swap. The blue cup is in the dishwasher, so you hand over the green one and hope. The Taurus toddler looks at the green cup for a long time. Then they look at you. Then it begins, slowly, and it lasts. The same goes for a rushed bath, a scratchy jumper or a song sung with the wrong words.
What wins them back: The right thing, back where it belongs, and time with nobody counting it. A Taurus toddler cannot be hurried out of a mood any more than you can hurry bread. Sit near them. Offer the blanket corner they like. Let them lean on you, which they will, for a surprisingly long time.
What you get in return is a toddler of deep, solid affection. The child who will not move for an hour will also lie on your chest for one.
Gemini: the toddler who narrates
Favourite word: “What’s that?” Closely followed by “and then?” A Gemini toddler is ruled by Mercury, the messenger planet, and words are their favourite toy.
Signature move: The running commentary. A Gemini toddler tells the bus queue about the dog, the dog about the bus, and you about everything twice. They pick up two toys, play with both for a minute, drop both and go for a third. They repeat, with perfect timing, the word you said quietly in the kitchen when the jar slipped.
Meltdown trigger: Boredom. A long wait with nothing new to look at, the same toy for too long, a question met with “mm” instead of an answer. Gemini is an air sign, and air needs to move. When nothing moves, the toddler makes something move, usually loudly.
What wins them back: Something new, fast. Turn them to face a different window. Hand them a spoon and a pot lid. Or ask them a question: “What colour is that lorry?” A Gemini toddler in a storm can often be talked down, if you talk about something interesting. They also love a silly made up word, and a meltdown can end in laughter if you say “flibbertigibbet” at the right moment.
Cancer: the toddler who holds on
Favourite word: “Up.” Meaning: carry me, hold me, I want to see the world from your arms.
Signature move: The leg hug. A Cancer toddler wraps around one of your legs at the door of a new place and stays there, watching, until they feel ready. At home they gather people. They want everyone in the same room, teddy included, and they will tuck teddy into bed with great care and a blanket that is a tea towel.
Meltdown trigger: A goodbye that is too quick and too cheerful. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and the Moon is about home, safety and the people who are yours. When the person leaves before the child was ready, the feeling comes out sideways: tears at the shoes, a refused snack, “my tummy hurts”. The upset is real. It just takes the long way round.
What wins them back: Your lap, and the same words every time. A Cancer toddler loves a leaving ritual: two kisses, one wave at the window, the same little phrase. Once the harbour is safe, this toddler sails much further out than people expect. More closeness now brings more confidence later.
Leo: the toddler with a stage
Favourite word: “Watch.” Or “look at me”, said from the top of the sofa, in a crown that was a paper plate this morning.
Signature move: The show. A Leo toddler dances in the kitchen, sings in the trolley and takes a bow after putting their own sock on. Leo is ruled by the Sun itself, and this child shines on purpose. They also like being in charge of games, and they are good at it, handing out roles to the other toddlers like a small, warm director.
Meltdown trigger: Being laughed at when they meant it. You laughed because it was sweet. They saw the laugh and heard “you are silly”. Leo also bursts when someone else gets the clapping they were expecting, or when they are told off in front of other children. The Leo storm is loud and proud: a stamp, a shout, and a turned back.
What wins them back: An audience that stays. Watch the whole song, all four verses. Clap at the end. Give them a job with a bit of glory in it, like carrying the napkins to the table or helping the baby. And hug them. Leo runs on warmth, and a toddler who feels seen again comes back fast and shines twice as bright.
Virgo: the toddler who fixes things
Favourite word: “Fix it.” Also “not like that”, said kindly but firmly about the way you fold a towel.
Signature move: Lining things up. A Virgo toddler puts the cars in a row by size, or by colour, or by a rule that makes perfect sense to them and none to you. They spot the crumb on the floor and pick it up. They notice that you moved the plant. Virgo is ruled by Mercury like Gemini, but here Mercury looks down at the details instead of out at the world.
Meltdown trigger: The broken biscuit. Something is wrong with the thing, and now the thing is ruined. A torn page, a sock seam in the wrong place, a plan that changed without a reason. To an adult it is small. To a Virgo toddler it is a mistake in the world that nobody else is fixing.
What wins them back: A job with a clear finish. “Can you match all the socks?” The sorting calms them. When something goes wrong, say plainly that it has been dealt with: “The page is taped. It’s fixed now. It’s finished.” A Virgo toddler needs to hear that the mistake is over, in so many words.
Libra: the toddler who wants company
Favourite word: “You too.” Come and sit, come and play, come and look. Libra is an air sign ruled by Venus, and for this child almost nothing is fun alone.
Signature move: Sharing a bite. A Libra toddler offers you a soggy piece of their toast, a lick of their lolly, a turn with their spade. They hold hands with two people at once. When two other children fall out, the Libra toddler is the one who brings a biscuit to the one who is crying.
Meltdown trigger: Raised voices, anywhere in the house, even on the television. Also the big choice. “Which one do you want?” in front of a shelf of eight toys is not a gift to a Libra toddler. It is a weight. They look at all eight, then at you, and the face crumples.
What wins them back: Company for the ordinary thing, and a choice cut down to two. “Red cup or blue cup?” is a choice they can make. Sit on the floor next to them, doing nothing much. Let them make up after a squabble, because putting things right is how Libra feels safe again. And now and then, help them say what they want, out loud, even when someone else wants it too.
Scorpio: the toddler who watches
Favourite word: “Mine.” Not greedy. Private. My stone, my drawing, my secret place behind the sofa.
Signature move: The long stare. A Scorpio toddler meets a new person from behind your knee and looks at them for a very long time, without blinking, without smiling. Then, one day, they decide. And when a Scorpio toddler chooses you, they choose you completely. They also keep stores: a toy oven full of treasures, a pocket full of shells nobody is allowed to see.
Meltdown trigger: Being made to perform feelings they do not have. “Give Auntie a hug.” “Say sorry like you mean it.” Also a small fib told to make life easier, like “the park is closed” when it is not. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, ruled by Mars and, for modern astrologers, Pluto. It notices what is underneath, and a toddler who catches you in a fib remembers it. The Scorpio storm is often quiet, a hard silent face that lasts.
What wins them back: The truth, said plainly, and space. “We’re going home because I’m tired.” A Scorpio toddler respects that. Then stay close without asking questions. Do not tell the room what they are feeling. Let them come back in their own time, and they will, often by quietly putting their hand in yours.
Sagittarius: the toddler who heads for the horizon
Favourite word: “Outside.” Said at the window, at the door, at seven in the morning and in the rain.
Signature move: The bolt. A Sagittarius toddler does not run away from you. They run toward the far gate, the big tree, the dog three fields away, and they fully expect you to follow. Jupiter, the planet of wide places, rules this sign, and the toddler wants all of the park, not the corner with the swings. They also say exactly what they see, at full volume, about the man in the queue.
Meltdown trigger: Being shut in. The car seat on a long journey, a rainy day indoors with nothing to explore, or worst of all, a promised outing that quietly turns into staying home. The Sagittarius storm is loud and short, like a summer shower.
What wins them back: An open door. Even a walk round the garden in wellies resets this toddler. So does a big question taken seriously: Sagittarius toddlers ask early about the large things, like where the sun goes and whether worms have mums. Answer properly. They feel respected, and the bad mood is forgotten in a minute.
Capricorn: the toddler with a job to do
Favourite word: “I’m busy.” Said with total seriousness by someone who is two and a half and moving pegs from one box to another.
Signature move: Carrying the heaviest bag. A Capricorn toddler wants real work: the shopping, the watering can, the job of closing the gate. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn, the planet of effort and time, and these children often look older than they are. (“Cardinal” means a sign that starts things.) Then, without warning, they tell a joke with a perfectly straight face and wait to see if you got it.
Meltdown trigger: Failing in front of people. The shoe that will not go on while everyone watches. The tower that falls when the big cousin laughs. A Capricorn toddler has an idea of how it should go, and when it does not go that way, the frustration is enormous, and they will often refuse all help.
What wins them back: A real job, and the chance to practise in private. Let them try the shoe again in the hall, alone. Give them something that truly helps, like carrying the napkins or holding the gate. And tell them, often, that they are allowed to be little. A Capricorn toddler who is scooped up and carried like a baby, with no comment at all, is a toddler being given a rest they could not ask for.
Aquarius: the toddler who does it differently
Favourite word: “Why not?” A calm, curious question, and a real one.
Signature move: Using things the wrong way, brilliantly. The colander is a hat. The spoon is a phone. The big box is not a house, it is a machine for posting socks. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn and, for modern astrologers, Uranus, and this toddler sees the sideways answer that nobody else in the family would think of. They are also not very moved by what the other toddlers are doing, which can look like not joining in. It is more like having their own plan.
Meltdown trigger: “Because I said so.” An Aquarius toddler can take a reason, but an order with no reason feels unfair, and they will dig in, often very calmly, for a very long time. They also dislike being told what they are feeling by an adult who is guessing.
What wins them back: A proper reason, given once. “Hats go on heads because hands need to be free on the stairs.” Then let them think it over, alone if they want. Let their odd solution stand when it works. An Aquarius toddler treated as someone who can be persuaded is a much easier toddler than one treated as someone who must obey.
Pisces: the toddler who lives in the story
Favourite word: “Pretend.” As in, “pretend you’re a fish and I’m the sea.”
Signature move: Becoming something else, for days. A Pisces toddler is a cat for a week. They speak to the moon through the window and to the chair at the table. Pisces is a mutable water sign ruled by Jupiter and, for modern astrologers, Neptune, and the line between the game and the world is very thin for them. (“Mutable” means a sign that changes and flows.) They also feel the mood of the room before anyone speaks, and when another child cries, they cry too.
Meltdown trigger: Being pulled out of a game too fast. To you it is time for shoes. To them, you just pulled them out of the sea. A long, busy, loud day with no quiet in it does the same. The Pisces storm is a flood, not an explosion: tears that come all at once and drain away slowly.
What wins them back: Water, low light and a story with them in it. A bath, hands in the sink, a puddle. A lamp instead of the big light. “Once there was a little cat who had to put her boots on…” A Pisces toddler can follow a story home when they cannot follow an instruction.
Twelve toddlers in one sandpit
Put all twelve in a sandpit and you see the four elements at once.
The fire toddlers, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, are the loud ones. Aries is digging the biggest hole, fast. Leo is building a castle and telling everyone to look. Sagittarius has left the sandpit to see what is behind the hedge.
The earth toddlers, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, are working. Taurus has found the best bucket and is not giving it up. Virgo is making the sand smooth with the side of a spade. Capricorn is carrying sand from one end to the other because it needed doing.
The air toddlers, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, are talking. Gemini is chatting to three children at once. Libra is sorting out who gets the red spade. Aquarius is using a leaf as a spade and explaining why it is better.
The water toddlers, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, are feeling. Cancer is checking where you are every two minutes. Scorpio is quietly burying something precious in the corner. Pisces is pretending the sandpit is a beach and the sand is the sea and they are a crab.
None of these is the better way to play. They are twelve ways of being two. For more on how each element plays and for how long, see how each sign plays, and for the elements on their own, the four elements before the twelve signs.
Four kinds of toddler storm
Toddler meltdowns follow the element too, which is a useful thing to know at the supermarket till.
- Fire storms are sudden, hot and short. They burn out fast if nobody adds fuel. Give movement, not a lecture.
- Earth storms are slow, heavy and long. The child digs in. Give time, the right object and a warning before the next change.
- Air storms are full of words, or full of noise. The child argues or goes wild. Give a new thing to look at, or a real reason.
- Water storms are floods. The tears take over the whole child. Give closeness, quiet and something soft.
The full reading is in tantrums by element, and what settles each sign afterwards is in how each sign comes back after a big feeling.
When your toddler does not match the portrait
You read your child’s sign and think: that is not my child at all. That happens, and the chart explains it.
The Sun sign is one voice. The Moon sign tells you what comforts a child and how their feelings work, and at two it is still very loud. A Capricorn toddler with a Leo Moon will want a big audience for that serious work. A Sagittarius toddler with a Cancer Moon will run for the far gate and run straight back to check you are there. You can read all twelve Moons in the Moon signs.
The rising sign is how a child meets a new room, the first face they show. A Leo toddler with Scorpio rising may stand behind your knee at the party for twenty minutes before taking over the whole thing. See the rising sign in children, and Sun, Moon and rising for how the three fit together.
And if your toddler was born within a day or so of a sign change, check which side of the line they are really on with born on the cusp. A toddler you were sure was a Taurus might be a very settled Aries.
One more thing. Toddlers grow at their own pace, in talking, walking and everything else. If you are ever worried about how your child is developing, that belongs with your health visitor or doctor, not with the stars.
Quick questions
Which sign is the hardest toddler? None of them. Each sign is hard in its own way and easy in its own way. The Aries toddler wears you out by noon and forgives you by one. The Taurus toddler will not leave the park but will cuddle for an hour. Often the “hard” toddler is simply the one most different from you. For that, see when you and your child are nothing alike, or look up your own sign in the parent readings.
When does the sign start to show? In small ways from birth. But two to three is when it gets clear, because the child now has the words and the legs to act on what they want.
I have two toddlers of different signs. Help. Read the sandpit section again. A fire toddler and a water toddler need different things at the same moment, and that is fine. Give each the comfort that matches their element, and see siblings by sign for how the pairs get on.
Does my toddler’s sign change as they grow? No. The sign stays. What changes is how it shows. The same Aries fire that runs at everything at two finds new doors to run at later. The same Pisces tide that makes a cat for a week keeps finding new stories. The sky gave them their shape on the day they were born, and you get to watch it unfold.
