When the new baby comes: the older child, sign by sign

Every older child has to make room for a new baby. Their sign shows what they are afraid of losing, how the jealousy looks when it comes, and the small job that turns a rival into a big brother or sister.

Star patterns of the signs read in this piece: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces Star patterns of the signs read in this piece: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces Imagem: zodiac.baby

A new baby changes the whole sky of a family, and the older child feels it first. What they feel depends a great deal on their sign. A fire child is afraid of losing first place. An earth child is afraid of losing the order of things: the lap, the routine, the ground under their feet. An air child needs the change explained and wants a say in it. A water child feels the tide of love move away and needs to know it is coming back.

So the real question is not whether your older child will find it hard. Most do, in some way, at some point. The question is what exactly they are afraid of losing. The sign answers that, and once you know the answer, you know where to put your care.

This page goes through all twelve signs: how to prepare each one before the birth, what the first weeks look like, the shape of the jealous moment and the role that helps. It is about the arrival and the months around it. For how two children of different signs get on over the years, read siblings by sign.

The short answer, sign by sign

Older child What they fear losing The jealous moment looks like The role that helps
Aries Being first A sudden shove, a loud demand The fast fetcher
Taurus The lap, the routine, their things Digging in, guarding old toys The keeper of the baby’s things
Gemini Your talk and attention Chatter, interrupting, clever jabs The baby’s translator
Cancer Being your baby Clinging, going back to baby ways The soother, beside you
Leo The spotlight A big show, or a proud sulk The proud presenter
Virgo The known order of the day Worry, fussing, correcting everyone The checker
Libra Fairness and your company Giving way, then sudden hurt The baby’s first friend
Scorpio Their special bond with you A long, quiet sulk A private job and a private time
Sagittarius Freedom and going out Restless, loud, blunt The guide to the world
Capricorn Their place and their usefulness Over-helping, then tears One real job with a clear limit
Aquarius Being treated as themselves Cool distance, odd questions The baby scientist
Pisces The calm of the house Upset by the crying, drifting away The singer and comforter

Look at the Moon sign too, if you know it. The Sun sign shows how the child faces the change in daylight. The Moon sign shows what they need when they are tired and the baby is crying again at six in the evening. A Leo child with a Cancer Moon wants the spotlight and also wants to be carried like a baby. Both needs are real. You can read more in Moon signs and Sun, Moon and rising.

Before the birth: telling them by element

The four elements are the four kinds of energy the twelve signs share: fire, earth, air and water. Each takes the news in its own way.

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) wants the news short and wants something to do. Long talks about feelings bounce off. Tell them plainly, give them a job, and let them be excited out loud. Fire children often love the news at first. The hard part comes later, when the baby turns out to be slow, sleepy and very much in the way.

Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) needs the news concrete and slow. Show them where the cot will go. Tell them, by name, what will stay the same: the same bedroom, the same bath, the same story at night. If something has to change, such as moving rooms or beds, do it well before the birth, so the change and the baby do not arrive together.

Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) needs the facts and the chance to ask. Where is the baby now, how does it get out, why can it not talk, will it like me. Answer honestly and simply. Air children cope with almost anything they understand. What worries them is the thing nobody explains.

Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) needs the story and the promise. They hear the news with their feelings first, and under every question sits the same one: will there still be enough love for me. Say yes, often, in words and in touch. Tell them the story of their own birth, then talk about the new baby as the next part of the same family story.

For all four: tell them yourself, before they overhear it. Children hear far more than adults think. A child who finds out from a conversation in the next room has been left out of the biggest news of their year.

Aries: first is the problem

Before the birth. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars, the planet of action. An Aries child has always been first: first awake, first to the door, first in your arms. Now someone is coming who will get your attention first, every time, just by crying. Do not hide this. Give Aries jobs in the getting ready: carrying the nappies upstairs, choosing the colour of the baby’s hat, racing you to put the cot sheet on. A busy Aries is a happier Aries.

The first weeks. The first meeting goes best when Aries walks in to find your arms empty. If you can, have someone else hold the baby when the older child arrives, so the first hug is theirs. After that, Aries usually has a burst of interest, and then gets bored. The baby does nothing. It does not race, it does not play, it hardly even looks at them. That boredom is normal, and it is not unkindness.

The jealous moment. It is fast and it is physical. A shove, a pat that is far too hard, a loud “no” the moment you sit down to feed. It comes from nowhere and it is over in seconds. Stay calm, move the baby out of reach and skip the lecture. Aries forgets the moment quickly, and a long talk only gives it more weight.

The role that helps. The fast fetcher. “Can you get me a nappy, quick as you can?” Give Aries tasks that involve speed and moving, and count them out loud. Feeds are the hardest time, because you are stuck in one place and Aries is not. Plan for them: a special box of toys that only comes out at feed time, or a race up and down the hallway that you can watch from the sofa. Read more in the Aries child.

Taurus: please do not move my world

Before the birth. Taurus is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus, the planet of comfort and pleasure. Fixed means it holds on. This child loves things to stay as they are, and a baby is a very big change. Taurus will feel every small change that comes with it. So prepare slowly. Let them touch the tiny clothes, smell the baby soap, sit in the new chair. Do any moving of beds or rooms months ahead, not weeks.

The first weeks. Taurus often seems calm at first, then reacts a week or two later, once it is clear the baby is staying. Keep their day as close as you can to how it was: the same breakfast, the same order at bath time, the same goodnight. Every bit of sameness tells this child the ground is still there.

The jealous moment. Taurus digs in. They refuse to get dressed, refuse to leave the house, or guard their toys with great force, especially their old baby things. “That’s MY blanket” is a very Taurus sentence. Do not pass their old things on to the baby without asking. Ask first, and accept a no. Given time, Taurus often hands them over freely, and it means far more that way.

The role that helps. The keeper of the baby’s things. Give Taurus a basket of the baby’s soft things to look after and fold. Let them decide which blanket is the warmest. Taurus loves to care through touch and objects. And keep the lap free for them: this sign needs physical closeness, so make sure there is a time each day when Taurus sits on you, heavy and warm, with no baby in the way. Read more in the Taurus child.

Gemini: tell me everything

Before the birth. Gemini is a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of words and quick thinking. Mutable means it changes and adapts easily. This child wants to know everything. Read them books about babies, answer every question, and let them talk to the bump. Gemini often loves the idea of a baby and makes up whole stories about it.

The first weeks. Gemini comes to meet the baby full of questions and chat. They will tell everyone at nursery, and probably the man in the shop as well. The trouble starts when they notice that the baby cannot talk back, and that the adults are tired and quiet. Gemini runs on talk, and a quiet, tired house feels empty to them.

The jealous moment. It comes out in words. Non-stop chatter right through the feed, interrupting every phone call, or a clever little jab: “the baby is boring,” “can we give it to Granny.” Do not punish the words. Answer the feeling under them: “It is a bit boring, isn’t it. Babies don’t do much yet. You and I can still talk, though.”

The role that helps. The translator. “What do you think the baby is trying to say?” Gemini loves to speak for the baby, tell the baby what is going on and read it stories. Let them. Talking to the baby is how this sign bonds with it. And keep talking to Gemini during feeds. A feed can be your chat time together, the two of you with the baby in the middle. Read more in the Gemini child.

Cancer: am I still your baby

Before the birth. Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, the light of feeling and home. Cardinal means it starts things and takes the lead. Of all the signs, Cancer often takes most tenderly to a younger child, and also feels the change most deeply. Talk about family a lot. Look at their baby photos together and tell them how you held them. Cancer needs to know their own place in the family story is safe before a new person joins it.

The first weeks. Cancer may be very gentle with the baby, stroking its head, wanting to hold it, worried every time it cries. At the same time, they may cling to you more than ever. Both are true at once.

The jealous moment. Cancer goes back to being a baby. Wanting to be carried, asking for a bottle, talking in a baby voice, crying at the nursery door again. This is not naughtiness. It is a question: is there still room for me to be little? Answer yes. Carry them sometimes. Let them be small for a while. The more freely you give closeness, the sooner Cancer feels safe enough to be big again. If an older child’s eating, sleep or toilet habits change in a way that worries you, take it to your health visitor or doctor. That part belongs with them.

The role that helps. The soother, beside you. Cancer can sing to the baby, stroke its feet, or bring the soft toy when it cries. Do it together, side by side, so Cancer feels part of the care instead of pushed out by it. Read more in the Cancer child, and for the night-time side of this sign, the Cancer Moon.

Leo: who is looking at me now

Before the birth. Leo is a fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun. This child is warm and generous, and needs to be seen. A new baby draws every eye in the room, and Leo knows it before anyone says a word. So prepare Leo as a star in their own right. They are going to be the big brother or big sister, and that is a real title. Let them choose a present for the baby, or make a card to bring to the first meeting.

The first weeks. Visitors are the danger. Everyone comes in, walks straight past the older child and bends over the cot. Ask visitors to say hello to Leo first, and to admire something Leo has made. A grandparent who brings a small present for the older child too is worth their weight in gold to this sign.

The jealous moment. Leo puts on a show. Singing very loudly during the feed, a sudden dramatic fall, being extremely silly in front of guests. Or, when the show does not work, a hurt, proud sulk. Do not tell Leo off for wanting to be seen. See them, quickly and warmly: “I can see you. I love that song. Sing it for me again when the baby is asleep.”

The role that helps. The proud presenter. Leo loves to show the baby to visitors: “This is my sister.” Let them introduce the baby, hold it on the sofa for a photo, and be thanked for it out loud. Leo is very generous when the giving is their own idea. Read more in the Leo child and when a sign needs to be seen.

Virgo: what happens now

Before the birth. Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. This child notices everything and likes to know what comes next. A new baby brings a great many unknowns, so make them known. Tell Virgo who will look after them during the birth, where they will sleep and who will collect them. A clear plan drawn on paper, with pictures, calms this sign enormously.

The first weeks. Virgo is often fascinated by the baby’s care: how the nappies fasten, how warm the bath should be, why the baby’s head needs holding. They can become an expert very fast. They can also worry: is the baby too cold, why is it crying, is it all right.

The jealous moment. It often looks like fussing. Correcting you, getting cross when things are out of place, becoming very fussy about their own clothes or their own cup. The house is messier and less predictable now, and Virgo feels that mess on the inside. Give back one small piece of order that belongs only to them: their own shelf, kept exactly, or their own morning routine, done the same way every day.

The role that helps. The checker. “Can you check the baby’s bag has two nappies and the wipes?” Virgo loves a useful, exact job, and loves being thanked for the detail. But watch that Virgo does not take on the worry along with the job. The grown-ups are in charge of keeping the baby safe, and you can say so, kindly and clearly. Read more in the Virgo child.

Libra: is it fair

Before the birth. Libra is a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, the sign of fairness and company. This child likes the idea of a friend in the house. Talk about the baby as someone Libra will get to know, and talk about fairness too: everybody in the family gets turns.

The first weeks. Libra is often lovely with the baby, lovely with the visitors and very easy to have around. That is exactly the thing to watch. Libra gives way to keep the peace, and in a busy house with a newborn, a child who never asks for anything can go unnoticed for weeks.

The jealous moment. It comes late, and it comes as hurt about fairness: “You always hold the baby.” “It’s not fair.” Sometimes it comes as tears over something small that seems to have nothing to do with the baby at all. Underneath is a pile of giving way that nobody noticed. Thank Libra for being kind. Then ask what they want, and give it to them if you can.

The role that helps. The baby’s first friend. Libra loves to make the baby smile, to talk to it softly, to be the face the baby looks for. Let them have that bond. And protect Libra’s own time with you. Libra does not like being alone, and a busy parent can feel very far away. A few minutes together, just the two of you, means a great deal to this sign. Read more in the Libra child.

Scorpio: you are mine

Before the birth. Scorpio is a fixed water sign ruled by Mars in the old tradition and Pluto in modern astrology. This child attaches deeply to one or two people and can be fiercely protective of them. A new baby feels like a threat to that bond, and Scorpio senses it long before anyone explains. Be honest. Scorpio will see straight through a bright, cheerful story. Say something true: “Things will change. Some of it will be hard. You and I will still have our time, and I will keep it.”

The first weeks. Scorpio often watches the baby for a long time before touching it. Do not push them to hold it or kiss it. Let them decide when. Scorpio’s love, once given, is strong and lasting, and it cannot be hurried.

The jealous moment. It is quiet, and it lasts. A cold silence, a long sulk, a hard stare at the baby, a refusal to talk about any of it. Scorpio does not blow up and forget, the way Aries does. Scorpio holds it. What helps is a real repair: time alone with you, a promise kept to the letter, and honest words about how things are.

The role that helps. A private job and a private time. Scorpio loves a role that belongs to them alone: the only one who chooses the baby’s bedtime song, or the keeper of a special box of the baby’s first things. And keep one time each day that belongs only to Scorpio and you. Never let the baby take it. Read more in the Scorpio child and the Scorpio Moon.

Sagittarius: are we still going out

Before the birth. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter, the planet of growth and wide horizons. This child needs space and movement. The fear here is practical: will life stop? Will we still go to the park? Tell them plainly that it will not stop. Then make it true.

The first weeks. The early weeks with a newborn are mostly spent indoors, and that is hard on Sagittarius. They can be bored, loud and restless at the worst possible moments. Get them out every day, even if it is with a grandparent or a friend, even if it is only a walk to the shop and back.

The jealous moment. It looks like bad behaviour: running off, being loud while the baby sleeps, saying something very blunt, such as “it’s ugly” or “it smells.” Mostly it is boredom and the feeling of being shut in. Laugh at the honest bits if you can, and give all that energy somewhere to go.

The role that helps. The guide to the world. Sagittarius can show the baby everything: “Look, a bus. Look, a dog.” Let them help push the pram, choose the route of the walk and tell the baby about all they see. This sign wants to share the big wide world, and a little brother or sister is a brand new person to share it with. Read more in the Sagittarius child.

Capricorn: I can help, I can help

Before the birth. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn, the planet of time and responsibility. This child takes the news seriously. They want to know what will be expected of them. Tell them, and keep it small. Capricorn tends to take on more than they are given.

The first weeks. Capricorn may become very grown-up very fast: helping, tidying, being good, never complaining. Tired parents are grateful, and it is easy to lean on this child too much. Watch for it. A four year old who acts like a little manager is carrying more than a four year old should.

The jealous moment. It comes after a long stretch of being good. A sudden flood of tears, a grumpy refusal, or “I don’t want to help any more.” That is the weight showing. Take it off them: “You have been so helpful. You don’t have to help now. Come and sit with me.”

The role that helps. One real job with a clear limit. Capricorn likes responsibility that matters: putting the baby’s socks in the drawer, choosing the baby’s outfit for the day. Give one job, thank them for doing it well, and say clearly which jobs belong to the grown-ups. Then give them permission to be little, and laugh at their dry jokes. Read more in the Capricorn child.

Aquarius: what is it for

Before the birth. Aquarius is a fixed air sign ruled by Saturn in the old tradition and Uranus in modern astrology. This child thinks for themselves and asks unusual questions. They may seem hardly interested in the baby at all, then ask something surprising, such as “will it know it’s a baby?” Answer seriously. Aquarius likes to be treated as a thinker.

The first weeks. Aquarius often studies the baby instead of cuddling it. They notice how its hands grip, how it jumps at a noise, the faces it pulls. They may keep a little distance. That is not coldness. It is how this sign comes close: through interest first.

The jealous moment. It can be cool and a little strange. “Can we send it back now?” said calmly at the dinner table. Or a firm no to everything you ask, with no tears at all. Aquarius does not usually rage. It takes a position. Do not argue with the feeling. Explain instead: why the baby cries so much, why you are tired, why things are different for now. A child who understands the reason can live with it.

The role that helps. The baby scientist. Give Aquarius a notebook of baby facts: how many times it sneezed today, what makes it stop crying, the day it first smiled. Ask their opinion about the baby and listen to the answer. This sign feels close to people who take its ideas seriously. Read more in the Aquarius child.

Pisces: the house feels different

Before the birth. Pisces is a mutable water sign ruled by Jupiter in the old tradition and Neptune in modern astrology. This child feels the mood of a room before anyone speaks, so they will feel the change in the house long before the baby comes: the busy adults, the tired faces, the new things in every corner. Tell them a soft story about the baby and let them imagine it. Pisces often has a whole picture of the baby already.

The first weeks. Pisces can be very tender with the baby and very upset by its crying. A crying baby fills the whole house with feeling, and Pisces has almost no walls against it. They may cry too, or drift away into a long game in another room.

The jealous moment. It often looks like being lost: daydreaming, losing things, tears without a clear cause, clinging at bedtime. Pisces is soaking up the strain in the house. Give them a quiet place to go, with a soft light and some music, and some calm time with you there.

The role that helps. The singer and comforter. Pisces can sing to the baby, make up songs for it, or find the soft toy it likes best. This sign heals through kindness and imagination, and being the baby’s comforter turns all that feeling into love. Remember that the comforter needs comforting too. Read more in the Pisces child.

The baby has a sign too

The new baby arrives with a sign of their own, and it shapes how the two children get on. Some pairs settle easily. Fire and air tend to lift each other up, and earth and water tend to grow close and steady. Others take more work, such as a fast fire child with a slow earth baby, or a fixed sign beside a very changeable one. The main pairings are in siblings by sign.

In the first weeks, though, the baby’s sign matters less than the older child’s. A newborn is mostly sleeping, feeding and crying. The older child is the one making sense of a whole new world. Put your reading there first.

If the older child is a fixed sign, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, the hardest stretch may come later, when the baby starts to crawl and grab their things. Fixed signs hold on, and sharing is hard for them in a very particular way. Read sharing and the fixed signs before that day comes.

Your own sign is in the picture too

You are not a plain background in all this. Your sign shapes how you handle a tired, jealous older child. A fire parent may move too fast for an earth child who needs things told slowly. A water parent may feel every jealous moment as their own heartbreak. An earth parent may hold the routine so tightly that there is no room for an air child’s questions. Knowing your own pattern helps you step around it. Read your sign in the parent signs.

What every sign needs

Under the twelve different shapes, three things help every older child.

  1. Their own time with you. Ten minutes a day, just the two of you, doing something ordinary. It does more than anything else on this page. Most jealousy is a worry that there is not enough of you to go round. Showing them, every day, that there is enough is the answer.
  2. No blame on the baby. Try not to say “we can’t, because of the baby” too often. Say “we can’t right now” instead. Then the baby is not the reason the older child loses everything they love.
  3. Room for every feeling. A child can love the baby and also wish it would go away, both on the same afternoon. Both feelings are allowed. Hurting is not, and you can hold that line kindly.

The older child is learning one of the biggest lessons of early life: that love is not a cake, cut into smaller slices with every new person. It is more like the night sky, with room for one more star. When the day gets too much for them, what calms each sign has the comfort that reaches each one, and the family role each sign takes shows the job each child quietly takes on as the family grows.
