Sharing and the fixed signs

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are the holders of the zodiac. Each finds sharing hard for its own reason, because each is holding something different. Find out what your child is guarding, and sharing stops being a daily battle.

If your child finds sharing harder than other children seem to, look at their sign. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are the four fixed signs, and fixed signs hold on. That is their nature, and it is also their gift. But they do not all hold the same thing. Taurus holds the object itself. Leo holds the right to give. Scorpio holds the bond and the private world around it. Aquarius holds the rule, and needs it to be fair.

That is why “come on, share nicely” fails so often with these children. It answers a problem they do not have. Find out what your fixed child is really holding, and you can help them let go of the toy without asking them to let go of the thing that matters.

What “fixed” means

Astrology sorts the twelve signs into three groups, called modalities. A modality describes how a sign moves. Cardinal signs start things. Fixed signs keep things going. Mutable signs change and adapt. There are four signs in each group, one from each element.

The fixed signs sit in the middle of the seasons. Taurus falls in the middle of spring, Leo in the middle of summer, Scorpio in the middle of autumn and Aquarius in the middle of winter, in the Northern Hemisphere year the zodiac grew up with. A season in its middle is settled. It is not starting and it is not ending. It is simply itself, as strongly as it will ever be. A fixed-sign child is like that. Once they have something, a toy, a person, a place or an idea, they settle into having it.

The element tells you what is being held. Taurus is earth, so it holds what you can touch. Leo is fire, so it holds its own warmth and the giving of it. Scorpio is water, so it holds feelings and bonds. Aquarius is air, so it holds ideas and principles. That makes four ways of holding on, and four ways of learning to share. For the whole picture of the three modalities, see cardinal, fixed and mutable signs in children. For the elements, see the four elements before the twelve signs.

The four fixed signs at a glance

Sign What they are holding Being made to share feels like What works
Taurus The object: its feel and its place Having the ground pulled away Warning, time and a few safe treasures
Leo The right to be generous Having the gift taken out of their hands Letting them offer, then noticing it
Scorpio The bond with the thing, and privacy Being exposed in front of others Private things kept private, honest turns
Aquarius A fair rule Being bossed by a rule with no reason A clear rule they helped to make

Taurus: holding what you can touch

Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of pleasure and comfort, and Taurus children love their things in a deep, physical way. The soft rabbit is not just any rabbit. It is a particular softness, a particular smell, the right weight in the crook of an arm. Another child’s hands on it change it.

What it looks like. A Taurus toddler asked to share will often hold the toy tighter and go very still. Pull, and they pull back, slowly and with surprising strength. Insist, and they may lie down on the floor with the toy underneath them. This is not greed. They are protecting something that is part of their world, and Taurus feels its world through the body.

Why it is hard. Taurus does everything at its own pace, and that includes letting go. Being asked to hand a toy over right now is like being asked to stop a meal halfway through a mouthful. The toy may be fine to share in ten minutes. It is not fine to share this second.

What works.

  • Warn first, then wait. “In a little while, it will be Ben’s turn with the digger.” Then wait. Then remind. Then the turn. Taurus can manage a change it can see coming.
  • A few safe treasures. Before a friend visits, let Taurus choose two or three special things to put away somewhere safe. Those are not for sharing, and nobody touches them. Everything else is for sharing. With the most precious things safe, Taurus relaxes about the rest.
  • Swap, do not snatch. Offer the other child something else first, or offer Taurus a swap. A hand that is holding something new lets go of the old thing far more easily than an empty hand.
  • Never pass their things on in secret. If Taurus’s old toys go to a cousin while they are out, they will notice, and it will cost you trust. Ask. Accept a no for now. Ask again in a week.

Once Taurus feels safe, something lovely happens. They become a very generous sharer, especially of food and comfort. The Taurus child who would not hand over the digger is often the one who brings you half their biscuit without being asked. Read more in the Taurus child and the Taurus Moon.

Leo: holding the right to give

Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the Sun gives its warmth freely to everything under it. Leo children are, at heart, very generous. That is exactly why being made to share upsets them so much.

What it looks like. A Leo child can give a favourite toy to a crying friend, all on their own, with real kindness. The same child, told to “share with your cousin,” refuses completely. Push it, and you get a loud, proud scene: the toy held up high, a huge “no,” maybe a stomp out of the room. Adults find this confusing. It seems so unfair after all that lovely giving.

Why it is hard. For Leo, the giving was the point. When Leo offers, they feel big, warm and kind. When an adult orders the sharing, the toy goes and the warm feeling goes with it, and Leo is left feeling small in front of other people. Leo would rather keep the toy than feel small.

What works.

  • Ask, do not order. “Your cousin would love a go on the bike. Would you like to show her how it works?” The giving stays in Leo’s hands.
  • Make the offer the big moment. When Leo does share, notice it, warmly and in detail. “You let Mia have the red one. That was kind, and look how happy she is.” Leo grows into the role you notice.
  • Never shame in public. A telling-off in front of friends makes Leo dig in harder. Take them to one side, quietly, and talk there.
  • Give them the host’s job. At a playdate, Leo can be the one who shows the guest the toys and chooses the first game. A Leo in the host’s chair shares far more easily than a Leo who feels pushed out of their own room.

Leo also finds a second kind of sharing hard: sharing your attention, or stepping out of the spotlight so someone else can stand in it. The same rule works. Let Leo hand the spotlight over, rather than having it taken. Read more in the Leo child and when a sign needs to be seen.

Scorpio: holding the bond and the secret

Scorpio is ruled by Mars in the old tradition and Pluto in modern astrology, and both planets carry deep, strong force. Scorpio children love few things, and love them completely. A toy is often tied to a person, a memory or a private world that nobody else is allowed into.

What it looks like. A Scorpio child may simply hide the precious things before anyone arrives. They may take a toy round the corner to play with it alone. If another child picks up something special, Scorpio may go very quiet and very angry, or snatch it back with a speed that shocks the room. They can remember who touched it for days.

Why it is hard. For Scorpio, sharing can feel like being exposed. Their things carry feelings, and letting someone else handle them is a bit like letting a stranger read their diary. Scorpio is also deeply loyal. With the one or two people they trust, they often share easily. The trouble is with everyone else.

What works.

  • Make privacy real. A box, a drawer or a shelf that is Scorpio’s own, and that nobody opens without asking. Adults included. A child whose private things are truly safe can be more open about the rest.
  • Be honest about turns. Do not say “just for a minute” and then let the visitor keep it for an hour. Scorpio remembers, and next time they will not trust the minute. Say a real time and keep to it.
  • Let them choose who to share with. Scorpio often shares happily with a sibling or a best friend and not at all with a new child. That is all right. Trust grows slowly in this sign, and sharing grows with it.
  • Repair, do not just move on. If something special was broken or taken, Scorpio needs it put right: a real sorry from the other child, a mended toy, an honest word. The apology each sign can hear shows what reaches Scorpio.

When a Scorpio child does share a special thing with you, show them it matters. It is a mark of deep trust. Read more in the Scorpio child and the Scorpio Moon.

Aquarius: holding the rule

Aquarius is ruled by Saturn in the old tradition and Uranus in modern astrology. Saturn brings rules and structure. Uranus brings the urge to do things differently. Aquarius children care about fairness in a big, clear way, and they will not accept a rule that makes no sense to them.

What it looks like. Aquarius often does not fight over toys with a lot of feeling. Instead, they argue. “I had it first.” “It’s my house, so it’s my rule.” “Why should she have it, she already had a turn.” They can be calm, logical and completely unmovable. Some Aquarius children share freely with everyone, then refuse hard on one point of principle that nobody else can see.

Why it is hard. Aquarius does not hold the object so much as the system around it. If the system seems unfair, sharing feels like giving in to a bully. “Share because I said so” is the worst possible line for this sign. It is a rule with no reason, and Aquarius resists those on principle.

What works.

  • Give the reason. “When you both have turns, you both get to play. If you keep it, she can’t play at all.” Aquarius listens to reasons.
  • Make the rule together. Ask Aquarius to invent a fair system: a sand timer, turns by counting to fifty, a chart on the fridge. A rule Aquarius helped to make is a rule Aquarius will defend, even against themselves.
  • Keep the rule the same for everyone. If a younger child breaks the rule and nobody minds, Aquarius minds a great deal. Explain any exception out loud.
  • Leave room to change their mind. Aquarius may say no, walk away, think it over and come back with an offer of their own. Let that happen.

Aquarius often shares beautifully with the child nobody else plays with, because to Aquarius that is simply fair. Read more in the Aquarius child and the Aquarius Moon.

A morning with two fixed children

Here is an everyday scene. A Taurus girl and her Leo cousin are on the floor with one toy kitchen. The Taurus child is cooking, slowly, putting every pan in its place. The Leo child wants to run a restaurant, loudly, with customers.

An adult says “share it.” The Taurus child grips the pan. The Leo child shouts. Nothing moves.

Try it the fixed way instead. To Taurus: “In five minutes, your cousin gets a turn with the pans. Which one is yours to keep?” To Leo: “Would you like to be the waiter and bring her food to the customers?” Now Taurus has warning and one safe pan, and Leo has a starring role that he chose. The kitchen gets shared, and nobody was made to feel robbed or small.

What works with every fixed sign

The four fixed signs hold different things, but some things help all of them.

Notice what they are holding, not just the toy. Ask yourself: is this about the object (Taurus), the right to give (Leo), privacy and trust (Scorpio) or a fair rule (Aquarius)? Then answer that.

Warn before every change. Fixed signs dislike sudden endings. “Two more goes, then it’s Sam’s turn” works far better than a toy lifted out of their hands. How each sign ends a game has more on endings.

Keep a few things that never have to be shared. It sounds backwards, and it works. A fixed child with a small, safe store of their own shares the rest more freely.

Let them finish. A fixed child deep in a game is often happy to hand the toy over once the game is done. Let them say when they are finished, inside a fair limit that you set.

Use promises carefully. Fixed signs take their word very seriously. “You promised you’d share” can make them feel trapped instead of willing. And when you promise them a turn later, keep it.

Praise the letting go. Letting go is the hard skill for these signs. When it happens, say so: “That was hard, and you did it.”

If a sharing fight turns into a full storm, the shape of it follows the element. Tantrums by element explains each one, and how each sign comes back after a big feeling shows the way back.

How the cardinal signs share

The cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, begin things. They tend to share by leading.

  • Aries grabs first and lets go fast. An Aries child may snatch a toy, play with it for one minute and drop it, and then happily let anyone have it. The fight is short. What works: turns that move, with a clear start and finish, such as races or “you go, then me.” See the Aries child.
  • Cancer shares easily with family and close friends, and guards against outsiders. A Cancer child may share happily with a sibling, then cling to everything when a new child visits. What works: welcome the guest together, and let Cancer be the host who hands out the snacks. See the Cancer child.
  • Libra shares too easily. Libra hands the toy over to stop a quarrel and is quietly sad afterwards. What works: check that Libra really wanted to give, and protect their turn as firmly as anyone else’s. See the Libra child.
  • Capricorn shares by the rules and wants the rules kept. Capricorn may organise everyone’s turns, sometimes rather firmly. What works: give them a fair system to run, and keep the final say with the adults. See the Capricorn child.

How the mutable signs share

The mutable signs, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, change and adapt. They tend to share by moving on.

  • Gemini shares by swapping. A Gemini child trades one toy for another with great interest and soon loses track of who had what. What works: games with lots of pieces and lots of turns. See the Gemini child.
  • Virgo shares, but cares about how things are used. The trouble starts when another child puts the puzzle pieces in the wrong box. What works: share the toy along with the right way to use it, and keep a few careful things for Virgo alone. See the Virgo child.
  • Sagittarius gives things away freely and forgets them. They may lend a friend their scooter and leave it at the park. What works: praise the generosity, with a gentle word about looking after things. See the Sagittarius child.
  • Pisces gives away too much and feels it later. A Pisces child can hand a favourite toy to a crying friend and then cry about it at home that night. What works: let Pisces be kind, then check in afterwards about how it felt. See the Pisces child.

Notice the pattern. The cardinal and mutable signs often share more easily on the surface, and each has its own catch underneath. The fixed signs show their struggle openly. That is not worse. It is simply more honest.

The Moon and rising can hold on too

A child does not need a fixed Sun to find sharing hard. A fixed Moon, in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, holds on in the private, tired, end-of-the-day part of the child. A Gemini Sun child with a Taurus Moon may swap toys cheerfully all morning, then hold the bedtime teddy with an iron grip at night. A fixed rising sign shows in the first moment of meeting: the child who walks into a playdate and heads straight for their own things to guard them.

The holding is strongest of all in a fixed double sign, where the Sun and the Moon share one fixed sign. A double Taurus or double Scorpio holds on all the way through, by day and by night. To read all three parts of a chart together, see Sun, Moon and rising and the Moon signs.

Two fixed children under one roof

When two fixed children share a house, the same sharing battle can run for years. Each holds on, and neither wants to let go first. A Taurus and a Leo can stand over one toy for a very long time.

What helps is clear ownership. Each child has their own set of certain things, their own shelf, maybe their own colour. Shared things have clear turns and a clear system. And watch for the day a new baby becomes a grabbing toddler, because that tests a fixed older child more than anything. The new baby sibling by sign covers the early months, and siblings by sign covers the pairings as they grow. For shared rooms and shared space, see how each sign learns to share the house.

The gift inside the holding

It is easy to see a fixed child’s holding on as a problem. It is also one of their great strengths.

The child who will not let go of a toy is the child who looks after their things for years. The child who guards a friendship is the friend who stays. The child who holds on to a fair rule is the one who stands up for the child left out. Taurus keeps, Leo gives warmly, Scorpio stays loyal and Aquarius stays fair.

Sharing is something they learn in their own time and their own way. Your job is not to break the holding. It is to show them, again and again, that letting go of a toy for a while does not mean losing anything that matters.
