Double Signs

The double Sagittarius child

With the Sun and the Moon both in Sagittarius, the child who runs for the open gate at noon is the same child who wants a window on the sky at night. Freedom is not a phase for them. It is what they are made of, inside and out, and the family's job is to give it a shape.

A double Sagittarius child was born with the Sun in Sagittarius and the Moon in Sagittarius as well. The Sun sign is the one on the birthday card. It describes the person the child is growing into, the self that goes out into the day. The Moon sign describes what sits underneath: the need that shows when the child is tired, upset or alone in the dark. Most children have a Sun and a Moon that want slightly different things. A double Sagittarius wants one thing, from both lights at once.

Sagittarius belongs to the fire element, the element of warmth, energy and spirit. It is a mutable sign, which means it adapts, changes and moves on easily. Its ruler is Jupiter, the largest planet, the planet of growth, meaning and wide horizons. So a double Sagittarius child is fire that travels: bright, cheerful, honest and always looking past the edge of the garden to see what is out there.

The heart of this child, said simply: they need room to roam, a true reason for every limit, and a grown-up who is willing to come along.

Why it happens: a New Moon arrival

The Sun stays in each sign for about a month. It passes through Sagittarius from around 22 November to 21 December. The Moon is the fast traveller of the sky: it goes through all twelve signs in about 27 and a third days, so it stays in each one for only about two and a half days.

The two lights can share a sign only when they are less than 30 degrees apart. That happens only around a New Moon, when the Moon comes round to the Sun and they meet. So a child with the Sun and Moon in the same sign was born within about two and a half days of a New Moon. A double Sagittarius child is a New Moon baby, or very nearly.

In astrology, the New Moon is the seed of a new cycle: the moment before the light begins to grow again. For a Sagittarius it fits well. This is a sign that loves a fresh start, a new road and the feeling that anything could happen next. At a New Moon the Moon is hidden in daylight, rising and setting close to the Sun, so the two lights crossed the sky side by side on the day this child arrived. Two travellers, one road.

The Moon sign is settled by one thing only: the exact time and place of birth. That matters most if the Moon moved into or out of Sagittarius on the birth day. If the baby was born near one of those edges, check it with how to read a child’s birth chart or the Moon signs page.

The archer’s bow, drawn twice

The Sun in Sagittarius gives you the Sagittarius child: cheerful, restless, honest to the point of awkward, and always heading for the door. The Moon in Sagittarius gives you the Sagittarius Moon: a need for space and for reasons that make sense. In a double Sagittarius, the outward child and the inward child agree. What makes them happy at the park is also what settles them at bedtime: openness, honesty and a sense that tomorrow holds something good.

About dignity. Neither light carries a special dignity in Sagittarius. Both are guests of Jupiter, the ruler of the sign, and in the old tradition Jupiter is the most generous of hosts. The Moon in Sagittarius works the way Jupiter works: by widening, by looking for meaning and by turning towards hope. That is a description of how this Moon moves, never of how deeply the child feels. A double Sagittarius feels deeply. They just reach for the light while they feel.

What the agreement gives

Buoyancy. This child bounces back. A disappointment hurts, and then, quite quickly, they find the next good thing. Both lights pull the same way, towards hope.

An open, honest child. What a double Sagittarius thinks, they say. That can be awkward in a queue at the post office. It also means you rarely have to guess what is going on inside.

Easy company on the move. Trips, visits, new places and changes of plan suit this child well. Many double Sagittarius children are at their happiest somewhere they have never been before.

A big, fair heart. Jupiter gives a strong sense of fairness. A double Sagittarius will stand up for a child who was treated unfairly, and will share without being asked.

What the agreement costs

No inner anchor. In many charts the Moon gives a restless Sun somewhere to rest. A Sagittarius Sun with a Taurus Moon, for example, roams all day and loves coming home to the same bed and the same cup. A double Sagittarius has no such anchor inside. The home base, the routine and the ending of the day have to come from the people around them.

Fire that scatters. Fire doubled is a lot of energy. Mutable fire doubled is a lot of energy going in many directions at once. Three games started, none finished. A walk that keeps becoming a longer walk. A question that leads to another question until it is far too late.

Hurt hidden under a joke. Because both lights reach for the bright side, a double Sagittarius child may laugh off something that truly upset them. The laugh is a way through, not a sign that the hurt is small.

Day Night The double Sagittarius
Light Sun in Sagittarius Moon in Sagittarius Both in Jupiter’s sign
What it wants The open gate, the next place Room to breathe, a reason, a tomorrow Freedom at every hour
What darkens it Being kept in A rule with no reason Both at once
What restores it Fresh air and a new path An honest answer and some sky Going out, and being told the truth

How it shows by age

The first year

A double Sagittarius baby often brightens the moment the front door opens. Indoors, they may fuss and wriggle. On the doorstep, with air on their face and the street in view, the mood can change in seconds. Many parents of this baby learn to keep the coat by the door and go out more than they planned.

Facing out is often a favourite. A baby carried so they can see the world, rather than the inside of your jumper, may settle sooner, because looking out is itself a comfort. The head turns to the window, to the open door, to the sound of other people far away.

New places can be easier than you expect. A double Sagittarius baby may sleep happily in a travel cot at a friend’s house and wake up smiling in a room they have never seen. Sameness matters less to them than to most babies. Space matters more.

When they start to move, they move away. Not upset, not searching for anyone, just going: round the sofa, under the table, towards the kitchen to see what is happening there. They assume you will follow, and they are usually delighted when you do.

The toddler years

The toddler years are the years of the expedition. A walk to the shop becomes a journey with stops for every dog, puddle and interesting gate. Pockets come home full of stones, sticks and a feather. These are not rubbish. They are what an explorer brings back.

The questions start early and they are big. Why does the Moon follow the car? Where does the river go? What happens when you die? A double Sagittarius toddler asks these at bedtime, in the bath and in the middle of the supermarket, and they want a real answer, even if the real answer is “Nobody knows that yet.”

Their honesty is famous and loud. “That lady has a very big nose.” “Grandad’s house smells.” There is rarely any meanness in it. They have simply noticed something true and said it, in the same breath. The lesson is about when and where, not about the truth itself.

Rules land best with a reason. “We hold hands here because cars come round that corner fast” works far better than “Because I said so.” A double Sagittarius toddler may still argue, but they argue with a reason, not with a wall.

Starting school

At school, the double Sagittarius child is usually friendly with everyone and fixed to no one group. They move between friends easily and rarely take sides in the playground’s small wars, unless something unfair has happened. Then they take a side loudly.

They love new topics and hate repeating old ones. A project on the solar system might grow into a cardboard rocket, a list of every planet’s moons and a request to visit an observatory. The same child may lose their reading folder twice in one week, because the folder was not interesting and the rocket was.

The school trip is often the high point of their year. So is any lesson that goes outside. On days with long hours at a desk, expect the energy to come out on the walk home, all at once. The guide to after nursery for fire signs covers that gate-time burst, and first friendships by sign follows how this child makes friends everywhere.

Easy to misread

What it looks like: ignoring you when you call. What it is: a child already halfway to the horizon. A double Sagittarius at the park is not defying you. They are absorbed in the next interesting thing and simply assume you are coming along. Go to them, touch their shoulder, then speak.

What it looks like: rudeness. What it is: honesty without timing yet. The child said a true thing at the wrong moment. Thank them for telling the truth, privately, and teach the timing at a separate, calm moment. Punishing the truth only teaches them to hide it.

What it looks like: laughing while being told off. What it is: a mood trying to lift itself. Both lights in this chart reach for the bright side, and sometimes that shows up as a nervous giggle in a serious moment. It is not contempt. Lower your voice, keep it short, and check the feeling later.

What it looks like: not able to settle to anything. What it is: mutable fire learning through variety. Three short goes at a puzzle, with a run round the garden in between, may get further than one long sit. The guide to cardinal, fixed and mutable children explains why this child learns by moving between things.

What it looks like: a huge reaction to a small broken promise. What it is: fairness, which Jupiter holds sacred. A trip to the park that was mentioned and then forgotten is not small to this child. It was a promise, and truth matters to them more than almost anything.

When it overflows, and the way back

The storm in doubled fire

Most double Sagittarius storms begin with a door closing. A rainy day kept indoors. An outing cancelled. A game stopped with no reason given. A long journey with the straps on. The feeling is of a cage, and with fire in both lights there is nothing calm inside to wait it out.

This storm often builds rather than bursts. First comes restlessness: jumping on the sofa, running laps of the hall, making noise for no clear reason. Then comes the flare: shouting, throwing, a furious “It’s not fair.” If nobody opens a door, the energy keeps climbing.

The way back

Open a door, as literally as you can. Step into the garden, open a window, walk to the end of the road and back. For a double Sagittarius, fresh air often does in five minutes what talking cannot do in twenty.

Then give the true reason, once, and show what lies beyond it. “We can’t go to the beach today because the car is broken. We’ll go on Saturday, and you can choose where we have lunch.” A limit with a reason and a horizon feels like a map, not a cage. That changes everything for this child.

Humour comes last, not first. When the feeling has been heard, a silly joke or a story that turns the disaster into an adventure can help a double Sagittarius back into the light. Laugh with them, after you have listened to them.

At night

After dark the Moon takes over, and for this child the Moon is a Sagittarius Moon. Bedtime asks a double Sagittarius to do the hardest thing of all: to stop, in a small room, with the door shut and the day over. Often the resistance is not about tiredness. It is about the horizon closing.

What helps is giving the mind somewhere to go while the body lies still. A story about a journey. One big question to wonder about until morning. A plan for tomorrow, said out loud: “Tomorrow we’ll look for the heron at the pond.” Some double Sagittarius children rest more easily with the curtain open a little, so they can see a piece of sky. If they wake, a calm, cheerful voice and a reminder of something good waiting in the morning is usually enough.

For anything about sleep, waking, feeding or health, your health visitor or doctor is the right person to ask. The chart can describe the need. It does not set the method. The guide to the Moon sign and the night waking follows each of the twelve Moons through a waking at night, and bedtime by the zodiac covers the evening itself.

What the family brings

Both lights of this chart are fire, and the other three elements usually reach this child through the people they live with. Each one can steady the double Sagittarius or send them further. For the basics, start with the four elements before the twelve signs.

A fire parent or sibling

Fire with fire means a family that is always going somewhere. An Aries or Leo parent shares the energy and the love of a day out. A Sagittarius parent shares all of it, including the dislike of routine, so there may be wonderful adventures and very few tidy cupboards. The thing a fire family most often lacks is the boring structure a double Sagittarius secretly leans on. One adult has to build it in. A fire sibling is a willing partner for every expedition, and the two will happily lead each other into trouble.

An earth parent or sibling

Earth gives this child the anchor they do not have inside. A Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn parent offers fixed points: the same breakfast, the same bedtime story, the week said out loud. A double Sagittarius may push against it, and still rely on it more than anyone knows. Virgo, mutable like Sagittarius, can turn plans into lists the child can follow. A Virgo parent helps most when the plan includes a reason and a bit of adventure. An earth sibling is the one who knows where the shoes are when the explorer is already at the gate.

An air parent or sibling

Air feeds fire, and here it feeds the questions. A Gemini, Libra or Aquarius parent loves the endless whys and has answers, ideas and books to offer. Gemini sits opposite Sagittarius, and a Gemini parent can turn the double Sagittarius’s big questions into long, happy conversations. The risk is that nobody stops talking long enough to go to sleep. Air is wonderful company. It also needs an ending.

A water parent or sibling

Water brings depth and the warm harbour to come home to. A Cancer parent makes the return as lovely as the leaving, which teaches this child that coming back is part of the adventure. A Scorpio parent shows that some truths need to be told gently. A Pisces parent shares Jupiter as the classical ruler of their sign, and the two may dream up whole worlds together. A water sibling may be hurt by the double Sagittarius’s blunt words without saying so. Help the honest one learn to look back and check.

The rising sign changes the doorway

The rising sign is set by the exact birth time, and it is the first thing a new person meets: the way the child enters a room. With a double Sagittarius it helps to read the rising sign by its modality, because the question with this child is always how much they move. For the full picture, see the rising sign in children.

A cardinal rising (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn). The doorway starts things. This child walks in and begins: a game, a conversation, a plan for everyone. Aries rising adds speed. Cancer rising adds a moment of checking that home is close. Libra rising adds charm. Capricorn rising adds a surprising seriousness at first meeting.

A fixed rising (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius). The doorway is steady, and it gives the restless fire a frame. Strangers see a calmer, more settled child than the family does at home. Taurus or Scorpio rising may hang back at first. Leo rising walks in shining. Aquarius rising walks in curious and slightly apart.

A mutable rising (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces). The doorway moves as much as the child does. With Sagittarius rising, this is a triple Sagittarius: friendly with everyone, gone round the corner before the coats are off. Gemini rising adds talk. Virgo rising adds a quick careful look before the leap. Pisces rising adds a dreamy, gentle first impression.

The element of the rising sign matters too: an earth or water rising often looks quieter at the door than the fire behind it. To read all three together, start with sun, moon and rising.

Three things to try this week

  1. Get outside before the day gets small. An hour out in the morning, in almost any weather, changes the whole shape of the day for a double Sagittarius. Do it before you need it, not as a rescue at four o’clock.
  2. Give one true reason with every new rule. Short, honest, said once. Then add the horizon: when the thing will be possible, or what you can do instead.
  3. Keep one small promise exactly. Choose something modest, say it, and do it on the day you said. For a child whose both lights live in Jupiter’s sign, a promise kept is a kind of love.
