Double Signs

The double Scorpio child

A double Scorpio child was born with the Sun and the Moon both in Scorpio, so the self they show by day and the need they carry at night go to the same deep place. They watch, they keep things close, and they give their whole heart to the few people who prove they will stay.

A double Scorpio child has the Sun in Scorpio and the Moon in Scorpio as well. The Sun sign comes from the birthday, and Scorpio’s season runs from around 23 October to 21 November. The Moon sign comes from where the Moon stood at the exact moment of birth, and it speaks about the inside of a child: what they need when they are tired, hurt or awake in the dark. Most children have these two lights in different signs. A double Scorpio has both in the same one, so the child you meet in the afternoon and the child who wakes at night are made of the same stuff.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Water is the element of feeling, and fixed means the kind of sign that holds steady and keeps going. In the classical tradition Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and in modern charts by Pluto too, and both are planets of depth and staying power. The Moon here is in what astrologers call its fall, because Scorpio sits opposite Taurus, the sign where the Moon is honoured most. That word needs care. Fall describes how the Moon works in Scorpio, not how much the child feels. In Scorpio the Moon does not float its feelings on the surface. It takes them down deep and keeps them there, safe, until it is sure.

Put in a single sentence, this child is someone who will feel everything all the way down, show it only to the people they trust, and, once they trust you, be yours completely.

Why both lights are in Scorpio

The Sun takes about a month to cross one sign. The Moon is a fast traveller. One full lap of the zodiac takes it roughly 27 days and 8 hours, so it lingers in any one sign for only about two and a half days.

Sharing a sign means the two lights are under 30 degrees apart. That happens only in the few days either side of a New Moon, about two and a half days each way, when the Moon draws level with the Sun and moves past it. A double Scorpio child is a New Moon baby, or very close to one.

For Scorpio, this has real beauty. The New Moon is the darkest point of the Moon’s month, when it cannot be seen at all because it is lost in the Sun’s light. A child of the sign that guards what is hidden was born when the Moon itself was hidden. And the New Moon is a beginning, the moment the Moon’s cycle starts again from nothing. Think of it as a seed underground in the dark, where all the growing begins out of sight. The two lights rose over the horizon together on the day this child arrived.

A birth just before the New Moon came under the old Moon, a last thin curve that shows low in the east before sunrise. A birth just after came under the young Moon, a first fine curve that hangs over the western sky at dusk. Either one makes a New Moon child.

How to find out

  1. Note your child’s birthday. If it falls in Scorpio season, the Sun is in Scorpio.
  2. Look up the New Moon dates for that year. If the birthday is within two or three days of a New Moon, the Moon may be in Scorpio too.
  3. Make a proper chart. Both lights must sit inside Scorpio’s borders, and the Moon changes sign every two to three days. On a day when the Moon was moving into or out of Scorpio, nothing but the exact birth time and place can settle it.

Our guide to reading a child’s birth chart shows how to do the last step, and the moon signs page introduces all twelve Moons.

Scorpio twice over

By day, the Sun shows the direction this child is growing in: their interests, their drive, what they pour themselves into. The Moon holds what they need underneath, and it shows most at night and when they are worn out. The Scorpio child page reads the Sun, and the Scorpio Moon child page reads the Moon. Here, both say the same thing.

What the agreement gives

Focus. A fixed sign holds. With both lights in Scorpio, this child can stay with one thing, one game, one person or one question for a very long time. Where another toddler moves on after two minutes, a double Scorpio child may still be at the same puddle twenty minutes later, finding out exactly what is in it.

Loyalty that does not wobble. When this child chooses a person, the choice is made in the daytime self and confirmed in the night-time need. It does not change because someone more exciting walks in. Being loved by a double Scorpio child is a quiet, steady, total thing.

An honest compass. Both lights read people. A double Scorpio child knows very early who means what they say. That makes them hard to fool and easy to reach, once you understand that the key is the plain truth.

A child who is the same all the way through. This is not the same as a child who shows everything. A double Scorpio child may show very little. But what is underneath does not change between day and night. The rules are the same at both hours: be honest, stay, keep your word. Learn those once and you have the whole map.

What it costs

No light counterweight. A child with a Sagittarius Sun and a Scorpio Moon has a cheerful, open daytime self that lets some air into the depths. A double Scorpio child has depth in the Sun and depth in the Moon. When something hurts, there is no breezy part of the two lights that says “oh well.” Everything is taken seriously, all the way down.

Water doubled, and fixed. Water feels and fixed water keeps. Feelings that would wash through another child can stay in this one for days. A hurt that was never put right is remembered for a long time. Our guide to the four elements shows how water moves, and in Scorpio it moves slowly and deep.

Privacy that can become distance. With both lights in the sign of the closed door, a double Scorpio child can go a long way inside before anyone notices. They are not shutting you out on purpose. They are keeping the feeling safe. But they need a grown up who knows how to wait at the door without breaking it down.

What the agreement gives What it costs
Long, deep concentration Hard to move on from something once started
Steady loyalty to their chosen people A broken promise lands very hard
A clear sense of who is being honest They notice every small fib, even the kind ones
One set of rules, day and night No lighter part to soften a hurt

How double Scorpio shows, year by year

The first year

Much of the famous Scorpio stare is described on the Scorpio child page. In a double Scorpio baby, look also at what happens after the stare. A new face is studied for a long time, with no smile at all. Then, sometimes days or weeks later, comes a smile that is complete, as if a decision had been made. It usually has.

These babies often hold on hard. The grip on your finger, the hand that closes on your top and will not let go when someone else reaches for them, the face turned firmly into your chest at a family party when the baby is being passed round. They are choosing, and they are clear about it.

When they are upset, it is the cause that matters. A double Scorpio baby who is cross about something is not easily distracted with a rattle. The feeling ends when the thing is put right, or when the right person arrives. Distraction tends to make them more cross, as if they could tell they were being handled.

You may notice that this baby, when they wake in a dark room, sometimes lies quietly looking at you before they make any sound. They are checking. The dark does not seem to frighten them as much as it does some babies. What matters to them is who is in it.

The toddler years

This is when the digging starts, sometimes for real. A double Scorpio toddler wants to know what is underneath: under the stone, inside the toy, behind the panel, at the bottom of the garden. They take things apart. They dig holes and watch insects for a long time. They want to see the inside of the seed.

They also ask the big questions early, and they mean them. Where do babies come from? What happens when you die? Why did the bird stop moving? A double Scorpio child is not frightened by the subject so much as by being fobbed off. A short, true answer at their level settles them far better than a cheerful change of subject.

Their games go deep rather than wide. One game, played again and again, each time a little more serious. One friend, rather than five. One special toy that nobody else is allowed to touch, and an objection, quiet and enormous, if somebody does.

They keep score of fairness. If a sibling was let off and they were not, they will remember, and they may bring it up a week later in perfect detail. It is not meanness. It is a strong sense that things should be put right.

Starting school

The slow, watchful start described on the Scorpio page is often slower still in a double Scorpio child. They may spend weeks at the edge of things, learning who is safe. It can look worrying. Usually it is careful work, and then one or two real friendships form and hold. Our guide to first friendships by sign shows how differently each sign makes its first friend.

At school this child often finds one subject and goes down into it: sharks, volcanoes, the bones inside the body, how bees make honey. The depth they bring can surprise teachers.

They notice which adults mean what they say. A teacher who promises and forgets loses this child’s trust, and a teacher who explains the real reason for a rule wins it. They tend to dislike being made a fuss of in public, at assemblies or in front of the class. Quiet, private praise reaches them much better.

They may also keep school to themselves. That is their right, and it is not a sign of trouble on its own. The story usually comes later, at an odd time: in the car, in the bath, in the dark, when nobody is looking straight at them.

Easy to misread

  • Refusing to say hello or give a relative a kiss looks like rudeness. It is trust that has to be earned. A double Scorpio child has not decided about this person yet, and being made to perform affection feels to them like telling a lie.
  • A long, steady stare that unsettles adults looks like hostility. It is gathering information. This child learns by watching, and the watching is real work.
  • No reaction to a lovely surprise looks like not caring. It is joy happening on the inside. It often comes out later, in private, as a whisper that it was the best day ever.
  • Jealousy when a sibling sits on your lap looks like possessiveness. It is a deep bond checking that its place is safe. Say out loud that it is, and the jealousy loses its sting.
  • A gloomy interest in death, monsters or scary things looks worrying. It is depth. This sign wants to look straight at the hard things, and doing it beside a calm grown up is how they learn the dark can be faced.

When it overflows, and the way back

The storm in fixed, doubled water is like water behind a dam. It builds quietly, often for hours or days, while the child seems sulky, distant or just “off.” Then it breaks, and when it breaks it can be fierce: a fury out of all proportion to the small last straw, or a cold, shut silence that is harder to reach than any shouting.

Because the Moon in Scorpio works through depth, the comfort has to go down to where the feeling is. Jollying along does not reach it. Distraction does not reach it. Being told it is nothing certainly does not reach it. What reaches a double Scorpio child is a grown up who says, once, what they can see, and then stays. “Something has really upset you. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.” Then quiet, and patience.

When the storm has passed, it needs a real repair. If the hurt came from a grown up, an honest apology that names exactly what went wrong builds more trust with this child than almost anything else. “I said I’d play after lunch and I didn’t. That wasn’t fair. I’m sorry.” Our guide to the apology each sign can hear goes further, and how each sign comes back after a big feeling shows the Scorpio way back.

The night belongs to the Moon

A double Scorpio child was born in the dark of the Moon, and the dark is in some ways familiar ground to them. But night is also when the deep feelings come up: the worry from school, the half-understood thing a grown up said, the dream that felt real. When this child calls out, what they usually need to know is whether the person who promised to be there is really there. A promise kept at night, coming back when you said you would, is worth a great deal to this Moon. How your family answers the night is your call; what astrology offers is a reading of what this Moon is asking for. Our guide to the Moon sign and the night waking covers the water kind of night.

Anything that concerns your child’s health, by night or by day, belongs with your health visitor or doctor; the chart has nothing to say about the body.

What the family brings

Both lights in water leaves fire, earth and air to come from somewhere else: the rest of the chart, and very often the family. Each element changes the house this child grows up in.

A fire parent or sibling

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius bring warmth, openness and fun out loud. A fire sibling drags the games out into the daylight, and a double Scorpio child can learn from them that not everything has to be guarded. A fire parent’s honesty is a good match too: fire says what it thinks, and Scorpio respects that.

The risk is pressure. Fire pushes, and a pushed Scorpio digs in. Leo is also a fixed sign, so a Leo parent and a double Scorpio child can hold a standoff for a very long time. Let the child arrive at the party in their own time, and never make them perform.

An earth parent or sibling

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn bring calm, routine and practical truth. Earth holds water in place, and this is often a very good balance. A Taurus parent is especially interesting: Taurus is the opposite sign to Scorpio, and it is where the Moon is exalted, at its most content. A Taurus parent offers exactly the plain, steady, comfortable calm that the double Scorpio Moon is reaching towards. A Capricorn or Virgo parent offers reliability and straight answers, which this child trusts.

The risk is that earth solves the problem and misses the feeling. Before you fix it, say what you see.

An air parent or sibling

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius bring words, ideas and a lighter touch. A double Scorpio child benefits from someone who can help them talk about what is going on, and from a sibling who laughs easily and lets things go.

The risk is breeziness. A joke at the wrong moment, a quick “you’ll be fine,” a promise made lightly and forgotten: these land very hard on this child. Aquarius is another fixed sign, so an Aquarius parent and a double Scorpio child can each wait for the other to give way. Somebody has to, and it should be the grown up.

A water parent or sibling

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces understand this child without needing to be told. A Cancer parent brings tenderness, a Pisces parent brings softness and forgiveness, and a Scorpio parent brings complete loyalty and a nose for the truth. The Scorpio parent page describes two Scorpios in one house as immense loyalty and long silences, and that is exactly the double Scorpio picture too. Be the one who opens the door first.

The risk with water is that everyone goes under at once and nobody says anything. A house of water signs needs one person who speaks the feeling out loud. For every parent sign with a Scorpio child, start at the parents hub. If you and your child feel very different, our guide to when you and your child are nothing alike may help.

The rising sign changes the doorway

The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the sign that was climbing over the eastern skyline when your child was born, and it shapes how they step into new places. You need the birth time to find it. With a double Scorpio, the rising sign can make a very big difference to what strangers see. Our guide to the rising sign in children explains it in full.

Fire rising. Aries, Leo or Sagittarius rising gives this child a bolder front door. They may march in, take the lead or laugh loudly with new people. Everyone says how outgoing they are. Underneath, the trust still has to be earned, and the bond still forms slowly. Do not let the confident start make you careless with promises.

Earth rising. Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn rising gives a calm, solid, slightly reserved entrance. With Taurus rising there is something special: Taurus is opposite Scorpio, so the Sun was near the western horizon, and this child was born around sunset. Earth rising usually makes a double Scorpio seem steady and unbothered, even when the water underneath is moving a lot.

Air rising. Gemini, Libra or Aquarius rising gives a friendly, talkative doorway. This child can chat with anyone about almost anything, except the things that matter most. Those stay deep. Air rising makes them easier to be around in a crowd, and just as private as ever at home.

Water rising. Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces rising adds more water to the entrance. This child watches from the doorway for longer, holds your hand tighter and reads the room very carefully before stepping in. With Scorpio rising too, all three are in one sign, and the whole child is a closed door that opens from the inside.

For how the three work together, see Sun, Moon and rising.

Three things to do this week

Keep one small promise exactly, every day. “I’ll be at the gate at three.” “I’ll come back in five minutes.” Choose something small and keep it to the minute. For a double Scorpio child, each kept promise is a stone laid in the wall of trust, and this week you lay seven.

Give them a box nobody opens. A shoebox, a tin, a drawer: theirs alone, for treasures, drawings and things they want to keep private. Tell them that nobody will look inside, and then make sure nobody does. If you are looking for a present for a Scorpio child, our guide to Scorpio baby gifts has ideas with depth in them.

Answer one big question truthfully. Next time they ask about something hard, give them a short, true, kind answer at their level, without changing the subject. Then tell them they can always ask you. If you are still waiting for your Scorpio baby to arrive, our list of Scorpio baby names has names with the weight and depth this sign suits.
