Double Signs

The double Aries child

When the Sun and the Moon both sit in Aries, the child who goes first in daylight is the same child who wakes first in the dark. There is no slower self underneath. That makes this little person wonderfully easy to read, and it means the pause has to come from the people around them.

A double Aries child was born with the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Aries too. The Sun sign is the one everybody knows, the sign of the birthday, and it describes who the child is growing into in daylight. The Moon sign describes something more private: what the child needs when they are tired, hurt, frightened or simply too small for the moment. In most children those two answers are different. In this child they are the same answer, given twice.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. It belongs to the fire element, which means warmth, energy and a need to act. It is a cardinal sign, which means it starts things. And it is ruled by Mars, the planet of drive and courage. So a double Aries child begins with the body, feels with the body and recovers with the body, all at speed, by day and by night.

The heart of this child in one sentence: they need to move the moment they feel, and to find that the adult can keep up without trying to slow them down.

Why it happens: a New Moon baby

The Sun moves slowly through the zodiac. It stays in each sign for about a month, and it is in Aries from around 21 March to 19 April. The Moon is much quicker. It passes through all twelve signs in about 27 and a third days, which means it spends only about two and a half days in each sign.

For the two lights to share a sign, they have to be less than 30 degrees apart in the sky. That only happens close to a New Moon, the moment when the Moon catches up with the Sun and the two stand together. In practice a double sign child was born within about two and a half days of a New Moon. A double Aries child is a New Moon baby, or very nearly one.

In astrology the New Moon is a beginning. It is the start of a new cycle of the Moon, the point where the light has not yet started to grow. Around a New Moon, the Moon rises and sets with the Sun, travelling across the daytime sky, close beside it and hidden in its glare. And the New Moon in Aries is the first New Moon of the zodiac year. So this child is a beginning born at the beginning, in the sign of beginnings. Parents often recognise that straight away.

Only the exact birth time and place can confirm the Moon sign, especially if the Moon was changing sign on the day of the birth. If the baby arrived near the start or end of the Moon’s stay in Aries, check it properly with how to read a child’s birth chart or the Moon signs page before you read on.

The sign twice over

The Sun describes the Aries child you see in the park: first up the frame, first to answer, first to cry and first to forget it. The Moon describes the Aries Moon underneath: the need to act on a feeling the second it arrives. In a double Aries, these do not argue. The daytime self and the night-time self want the same thing.

A small note on how the two lights sit in this sign. The Sun is exalted in Aries, which is its seat of honour in the classical tradition: the light is clear, bright and direct here. The Moon in Aries carries no special dignity. It is a guest of Mars, the ruler of the sign, so it borrows Mars’s way of working: quick, honest and physical. This describes how the Moon moves, never how much the child feels. A double Aries child feels as fully as any other child. They just feel fast.

What the agreement gives

Clarity. You always know where you stand. The child’s face, voice and body tell you the whole story within seconds, and nothing is hidden for later.

Strength. There is no tug of war inside. A child whose Sun wants to go and whose Moon wants to stay home can feel pulled in two directions. A double Aries is not pulled. When they choose, they choose all of themselves.

A very readable child. Parents of a double Aries usually learn the signs early. A certain set of the jaw means a decision has been made. A certain kick means a feeling has arrived. Once you can read these, you can often meet the moment before it gets loud.

A clean slate. Fire burns and then it is spent. The double Aries child rarely carries yesterday into today, and that gives the whole family permission to start again each morning.

What the agreement costs

No inner counterweight. In most charts the Moon brings something different from the Sun. An earth Moon would slow the child down. A water Moon would soften the edges. An air Moon would turn some of the heat into words. A double Aries has none of this built in. Nothing inside says wait. The wait has to come from outside: from the rhythm of the day, from the adults and from the other signs in the family.

The element doubled. Fire in the Sun and fire in the Moon means fire in daylight and fire at night. The child who is tired is not quieter. They are often louder, because tiredness takes away the little control a small child has, and what is left is pure Aries.

A short supply of slowness. Waiting rooms, long car journeys, queues and slow mornings cost this child more than they cost most children. Not because they are badly behaved, but because there is no slower part of them to retreat into.

Sun in Aries Moon in Aries In a double Aries
What it describes Who they are becoming in daylight What they need underneath, at night One answer for both
When something is wanted Goes first, tries everything Wants it in their hands now Goes first with total conviction
When tired Still busy, a little rougher Needs to move the feeling Moves even harder, with no quiet mode
After a storm Forgives quickly Does not keep a spent feeling Back to full warmth almost at once
What helps A fast, clear decision Something to do with the body Both, every time

How it shows by age

The first year

The double Aries baby tends to arrive at full volume and stay there. The interesting thing is not the noise. It is how little difference there is between the daytime baby and the night-time baby. Many babies have a sleepy, softer self that appears in the evening. This one wakes up exactly as they went to sleep: alert, clear about what they want and ready to say so.

Picture a bath. Most babies take a moment to decide how they feel about the water. A double Aries baby kicks the instant their feet touch it, and the kick is either joy or outrage, with nothing in between. Picture a nappy change. They are already rolling before the clean nappy is open, not to escape you but because lying still is the most boring thing in the world.

You may notice that this baby ignores the toy you hand over and reaches for the one on the shelf. The toy in your hand was your idea. The one on the shelf is theirs. That is Aries in miniature: the wanting must start inside them.

The good news of the first year is the recovery. A furious double Aries baby who is picked up, turned to face the room and given something new to look at is often laughing before you have finished worrying.

The toddler years

The toddler years are when the doubling shows most plainly. A single Aries toddler will sometimes, when very tired, go soft and clingy for a while. A double Aries toddler usually does not. Their tiredness comes out as more push, more speed and a shorter fuse.

Some scenes you may know. A zip that will not close causes a full eruption, followed a minute later by a cheerful request to go outside. A tower of bricks gets knocked down by its own builder, on purpose, with great joy, so it can be built again. Starting is the delight. A scooter is ridden straight at the corner of the path because the corner is there. At the kerb, the hand you hold is pulled hard, not because they want to cross, but because being held still is the hardest thing you can ask of them.

The other thing you will see is fierce loyalty. A double Aries toddler who sees a smaller child pushed at the playground may march over without any hesitation at all. Courage and kindness travel together in this child. They just travel quickly.

Starting school

At school, the double Aries child is usually the first to finish, the first to put their hand up and the first in the line. The doubled fire gives them a lot of energy and very little patience for the middle part of anything.

You may see a pattern with projects: huge excitement on Monday, a flying start, and then a loss of interest by Wednesday when the task stops being new. This is the cardinal signature twice over. Cardinal signs love the opening. A double Aries child does best when a long task is broken into several small starts, each one a fresh beginning.

Friendships are quick and warm. They may fall out with a friend at break time and be best friends again by lunch, without any long talk in between. Other children usually like them, because they bring energy to a game. Sometimes they need help noticing that a quieter friend has not finished being upset yet.

Easy to misread

What it looks like: not listening. What it is: the decision came first. By the time your sentence arrives, the double Aries child has already chosen and their body is on its way. Say the most important word first, the name of the thing, then the rest.

What it looks like: not caring that a friend is hurt. What it is: a feeling that has burned out quickly and moved on. This child often makes up through action instead of words: fetching the friend the best spade, offering the next turn. Watch for the deed. It is the apology. The guide to the apology each sign can hear explains why words alone feel slow to fire.

What it looks like: giving up. What it is: the end of a beginning. A double Aries child has spent their whole fire on starting and needs a new start inside the same task. “Now the second half. Race me.” works better than “You have to finish.”

What it looks like: rough play. What it is: testing strength, which is how Mars says hello. Pushing against a parent’s hands, wrestling a cushion, charging at the sofa: these are ways this child meets the world. Give the push a safe target and keep the rules short.

What it looks like: unbothered by your anger. What it is: they are already over it and assume you are too. When a double Aries child comes back two minutes after a storm with a drawing or a joke, they are not ignoring what happened. They are asking whether you have come back as well.

When it overflows, and the way back

The storm in doubled fire

Every Aries child flares. A double Aries flares without the soft layer that would usually catch it. In a single Aries with, say, a Taurus Moon, the storm hits something heavy underneath and slows. In a double, the fire meets more fire. That is why the storm can look very large very fast.

The pattern is usually short and has two parts. First the flare: noise, red face, stamping, maybe a thrown thing. Then the push: the child needs to do something with the leftover energy, and if nobody offers a way, they find one. Most of what goes wrong happens in the second part, when the adult is still talking and the child is still burning.

The way back

What reaches doubled fire is a channel and a wall, in that order.

The channel is something to do with the body. “Push my hands, as hard as you can.” “Stamp to the door and back.” “Throw the cushion at the sofa.” The feeling needs to travel through the arms and legs before any words can land.

The wall is a clear, calm line, said once. “I won’t let you kick me. Kick the cushion.” No long reason, no raised voice. A double Aries child respects a wall. A wall is something you can push against and know where you are.

Then comes the warmth. The moment the storm breaks, go back to normal. No replay, no lecture at the peak. If something needs teaching, teach it later in two sentences, when you are both calm and preferably both doing something else.

At night

Night belongs to the Moon, and in this child the Moon is in Aries too. So the night-time child is not a softer, smaller version. It is the same fast fire in the dark. A double Aries child often goes from deep sleep to a full voice in one step, with no murmur to warn you.

What they need is quick arrival and one steady sentence: “I’m here. You’re safe.” The speed of your coming is the comfort. A long wait reads as nobody coming, and the voice rises to find you. Once the need is met, many double Aries children drop back to sleep fast, which can surprise the adult who was preparing for a long night.

Unfinished business keeps this Moon awake. A fight about the toy box at bathtime, a quarrel with a sibling that ended badly: these are better closed before the light goes off, even with a few words. “That’s finished. Tomorrow is new.” Questions about sleep patterns, waking, feeding or health belong with your health visitor or doctor. The chart reads the need, not the method. The guide to the Moon sign and the night waking reads every Moon in the dark.

What the family brings

A double Aries child has a lot of fire and not much of the other three elements in the two lights. The other people in the house often supply what is missing. The four elements guide, the four elements before the twelve signs, is the place to start if the words are new to you.

A fire parent or sibling

A fire parent (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) understands this child from the inside. The days are full, the outings are many and nobody minds noise. The risk is that nobody in the room brings the pause. Two flares meet and become one bigger flare, usually over who decided first. If you are an Aries parent, your double Aries child is your own speed reflected back, twice. Be the one who stops the escalation, because the child cannot yet. A fire sibling makes a brilliant playmate outdoors and a hard roommate in a narrow hallway.

An earth parent or sibling

An earth parent (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn) brings exactly what the doubled fire lacks: steadiness, routine and a slower clock. This can be the most balancing pairing in the house, and also the most tiring, because the child pushes hardest against the very thing they need. A Taurus parent is a wall the double Aries can run at all day without knocking down, which is a great gift if the parent does not take it personally. An earth sibling gives this child a lesson in waiting simply by being there.

An air parent or sibling

An air parent (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) feeds the fire with talk, ideas and options. Air and fire get on well: the house is lively and full of plans. The useful thing air brings is words for the feeling, offered after the storm, not during. A Libra parent sits opposite Aries in the zodiac and naturally offers two choices instead of one order, which suits a child who hates being told and loves deciding. The risk is too much discussion. A double Aries cannot argue and calm down at the same time.

A water parent or sibling

A water parent (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) brings the soft landing after the fire. Water understands feeling deeply and offers closeness. The trick is timing: closeness during the flare can feel like being held down, while closeness after the flare is exactly right. A water sibling may be hurt by the double Aries child’s speed and volume without saying so. Help the fast one notice the quiet one. The guide to siblings by sign has more on how two temperaments share a house.

The rising sign changes the doorway

The Sun and Moon tell you who the child is and what they need. The rising sign, set by the birth time, is the doorway: how they walk into a new room or meet a new person. In a double Aries, the rising sign is often the first thing that shows something other than fire. Read more in the rising sign in children.

  • A fire rising (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius). Fire all the way through, inside and out. With Aries rising this child is a triple Aries: the entrance is as fast as everything else. Expect them through the door before you are. With Leo rising, the entrance has a little more show; with Sagittarius rising, more wandering off to explore.
  • An earth rising (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn). The doorway is slower than the child. They may stand at the nursery door looking careful and solid, and then become pure Aries once they are inside and feel safe. Strangers will think you have a calm child. You know better.
  • An air rising (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius). The doorway is chat. This child meets the world with questions and remarks, and the fire shows once the talk turns into action. Air rising gives the double Aries a way to say things before doing them, which helps.
  • A water rising (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces). The doorway is watchful or shy. The child may hang back for a minute and hold your leg, then let the fire out once they trust the room. This is not a contradiction. It is a soft door on a hot room.

To put the three together, start with sun, moon and rising.

Three things to do this week

  1. Give one real first every day. Pressing the lift button, choosing the first song in the car, opening the front door. Small, but theirs. A double Aries child with a daily first fights for fewer of them.
  2. Move before you ask for still. Before a meal, a car journey or a story, give five minutes of running, jumping or chasing. The stillness afterwards is easier, because the fire has somewhere to have gone.
  3. Close every day. Before the light goes off, end any quarrel from the day in one short sentence. For a child whose Moon is in Mars’s sign, a finished day is a quiet night.
