Double Signs

The double Pisces child

A double Pisces child was born with the Sun and the Moon both in Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac. By day and by night they are open, tender and full of pictures, and what they need most from the people around them is gentleness with a clear, kind edge.

A double Pisces child was born with the Sun in Pisces and the Moon in Pisces too. The Sun sign is set by the birthday, and Pisces season runs from around 19 February to 20 March. The Moon sign is set by where the Moon stood when the baby arrived, and it speaks for the part of a child that is hardest to see from outside: what comforts them, what frightens them, what they reach for in the night. Usually these two lights sit in different signs and pull a child in two directions. A double Pisces child has them side by side in the same sign, so their outer life and their inner life flow into each other with almost no line between.

Pisces is a mutable water sign. Water signs live by feeling, and mutable means a sign that bends, adapts and changes shape to fit what is around it. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter in the classical tradition, the planet of generosity and growth, and by Neptune in modern charts, the planet of dreams and soft edges. The Moon in Pisces is a guest in their house. It takes on the manners of its hosts: wide open, forgiving, imaginative, and very hard to keep separate from everything nearby.

If you keep only one sentence about this child, keep this: they feel the whole room as if it were their own heart, and they live half in a world of pictures and stories that is completely real to them.

Why both lights are in Pisces

The Sun spends about a month in each sign. The Moon is far quicker. Its trip round all twelve signs takes about 27 and a third days, which leaves it roughly two and a half days in any single sign.

So the Sun and the Moon can only be in the same sign when the gap between them is under 30 degrees, and the Moon closes and reopens that gap in about two and a half days on each side of a New Moon. At the New Moon, the Moon draws level with the Sun, disappears into its light for a short while and then moves on ahead. A double Pisces child was born in that window. They are a New Moon baby, or very nearly one.

For Pisces this carries a lovely double meaning. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, the end of the whole circle, the Sun’s final month before it starts again at Aries at the March equinox. And the New Moon is the very first moment of the Moon’s month. So a double Pisces child holds an ending and a beginning at once: the last sign, at the Moon’s first breath. The two lights came up over the horizon together on their birthday, moving as one.

Arriving just before the New Moon means a slim, fading Moon that rose shortly ahead of the Sun. Arriving just after means a new, thin curve that set soon after it, visible for a little while in the evening. Your child belongs to the New Moon either way.

Checking your child’s chart

Start with a calendar. Find a list of the New Moons for the year your child was born. If the birthday lands within two or three days of a New Moon during Pisces season, your child may be a double Pisces.

Then make the chart properly. Both lights have to sit inside Pisces itself, and the Moon moves on to a new sign every two or three days. The birth time and place are what settle it, and they matter most when the Moon was crossing from one sign to another on your child’s birthday. Our guide to reading a child’s birth chart shows what you need, and the moon signs page explains each of the twelve.

Pisces twice over

The Sun is the self your child is growing into in the light of day: what lights them up, what they move towards, the shape they are taking. The Moon is the need that lives under all of that, and it surfaces at bedtime, in the night and whenever they are tired. You can read the Sun alone on the Pisces child page, and the Moon alone on the Pisces Moon child page. In a double Pisces, the two flow the same way.

What the agreement gives

A great, open heart. Jupiter is the planet of generosity, and with both lights in Jupiter’s sign, this child gives freely. Their snack, their turn, their favourite toy, their sympathy. They feel for the lost dog, the lonely child, the character left out of the story. It is not a lesson they have learned. It is how they are made.

Imagination with no ceiling. Neptune’s sign doubled gives a child an inner world that is full and alive. A cardboard box becomes a boat, the boat becomes a voyage, and the voyage goes on for days. Their games have weather, music, sad parts and happy endings.

Easy forgiveness. Water that bends does not hold on to hurt the way fixed water does. A double Pisces child often lets a bad moment go quickly, and comes back to you with open arms after a cross word. That softness is a gift to the whole family.

A child who goes with the flow. Mutable signs adapt. A change of plan, a new place, a different babysitter: a double Pisces child often slides into it more easily than you expect, at least on the surface.

What it costs

No edge. The Sun and the Moon both live in the most open sign of the zodiac. There is no part of the two lights that says “this is where I stop and you begin.” A child with a Capricorn Sun and a Pisces Moon has a firm daytime frame around the dreamy inner world. A double Pisces child has dream on both sides of the door.

Water doubled, and spreading. Water feels, and mutable water spreads. Feelings in this child do not stay in one place. They soak outwards and they soak in. Somebody else’s sadness, the noise of a busy shop, the tension in a room after an argument: all of it ends up inside this child, mixed with their own feelings, until they cannot tell which is which. Our guide to the four elements explains water’s way of moving.

Easy to overload. With so little filter, a double Pisces child fills up fast. A day that would be fun for another child can leave this one flat, teary and lost by teatime.

Soft edges round time and things. Shoes go missing. The coat is never where it was. Five minutes means very little. This is not laziness. It is a child who lives more in feeling than in the clock.

What the agreement gives What it costs
Generosity and real kindness Gives too much away, including their own calm
A rich, living imagination Hard to call back from it to the real room
Quick forgiveness Takes on other people’s moods as their own
Easy with change on the surface Fills up quietly, then overflows all at once

How double Pisces shows, year by year

The first year

The Pisces child page describes the baby who is undone by things nobody else noticed, and who loves water. In a double Pisces baby, watch the face. These babies mirror very closely. Smile, and they smile. Look worried, and a small frown appears. When another baby across the room starts to cry, a double Pisces baby’s lip may wobble too, as if the crying had travelled across the floor and into them.

They are often deeply calmed by music and by the movement of light. Leaves moving outside a window, sunlight on the ceiling, the shadows of a mobile turning slowly: a double Pisces baby can lie and watch for a long time, with a far-off, peaceful look. One particular song, sung or played, can bring them from crying to stillness in a few notes.

They notice when the person holding them is tense. A calm, slow-breathing adult is half the comfort. A rushed or anxious one passes the hurry straight on.

The toddler years

The imagination arrives in full, and the Pisces child page tells you how deep it goes. In a double Pisces toddler, look at how much feeling sits inside the games. The teddy is not just put to bed; the teddy is sad today, and needs a story and a special blanket. The toy dinosaur has a family. The puddle is the sea.

They cry at sad parts of stories, often hard, and sometimes for the character nobody else was worried about: the wolf, the lonely giant, the last biscuit. Do not hurry them past it. Feeling for a story is how this child practises feeling for the world.

They give things away. A double Pisces toddler may hand their new toy to a crying child at the playground and walk off without it. They may hug a stranger’s baby. They may come home without their hat because someone else looked cold. It is lovely, and it is also why they need a grown up who gently keeps track of what is theirs.

After a day with a strong friend or cousin, you may find your child has come home talking like them, walking like them, wanting what they wanted. That is mutable water taking the shape of what it was poured into. By the next morning it has usually washed out, and your own child is back.

Starting school

The dreamy, kind, slightly lost school child is described on the Pisces page. A double Pisces child needs the same help, often more of it, and a few more things besides.

They often find a soft corner of the classroom and claim it: the reading den, the art table, the window seat. That place is a small harbour inside a big, loud day, and it helps to know where it is.

They often know who is sad in the class before the teacher does, and they may spend part of the day quietly looking after that child. That is real kindness, and it also means they come home carrying someone else’s day. A flat, teary afternoon is not always about anything that happened to them.

Friendships can be very close and a little merged. A double Pisces child and their best friend may want the same things, play the same games and feel the same feelings. When the friendship has a bad day, this child feels it in their whole body. Our guide to first friendships by sign shows how water signs bond.

After school, they need a soft landing more than questions. Our guide to the return home after nursery for water signs is written for exactly that half hour.

Easy to misread

What it looks like What it is
Telling stories that never happened Pictures and real life are still blended. A made-up story is often how this child tells you a real feeling. Ask about the story, and you will learn about the feeling.
Not listening when you speak They are somewhere else, inside a game or a daydream. They need to be fetched back gently, by name, with a hand on the shoulder, before the instruction.
Tears with no cause you can find The cause is real but it may not be theirs. A double Pisces child picks up feelings from others and cannot yet tell where those feelings came from.
Being a pushover with other children Jupiter’s open hand. They give because giving feels right. They need help learning that they are allowed to keep something too.
Falling apart after a happy, busy day Too much input. The fun and the noise and the crowds all went in, and now it is coming out. It is a full cup, not an ungrateful child.

When it overflows, and the way back

The storm in mutable, doubled water does not crash like a wave or break like a dam. It spreads, like mist rolling in off the sea, until everything is grey and the child cannot see their way out. They cry, but they cannot say why. Everything is wrong at once: the sock, the drink, the light, the dinner. Or they drift off instead, going vague and far away, curling up somewhere and not answering, because the inner world is quieter than the outer one.

The first step is always the same: turn everything down. Lower the lights, lower your voice, lower the noise. Take away input before you add any comfort. A double Pisces child cannot calm down in a room that is still busy around them.

Then reach them through the things that speak their language. Water is one: a warm bath, hands in a bowl of warm water, the sound of rain on the window. Music is another: the same soft song, hummed. A story is a third. “Once there was a little fish who had swum through a very noisy sea all day, and was so tired…” Many double Pisces children will climb into a story long before they can climb out of a feeling.

When the mist has cleared, and only then, help them sort. “Were you sad, or was the house noisy, or were you missing Granny?” Over time this child can learn to ask that question for themselves, which is one of the most useful things a Pisces child can learn. Our guide to what calms each sign has the water comforts side by side, and tantrums by element shows how the water storm differs from the others.

The night belongs to the Moon

At night the Moon rules, and in a double Pisces child the line between waking and dreaming is thin. They may wake from a dream unsure which world they are in. A frightening picture from a book can follow them to bed. What they usually need is help finding the edges of the real room again: a familiar voice, a low light, their own blanket, a few plain words about where they are and who is with them. That is the need this Moon carries; the way your family meets it at night is yours to choose, and the chart does not hand out sleep rules. Our guides to the moment before sleep and the Moon sign and the night waking look at the water night in more detail.

Should anything about your child’s sleep, crying or feeding raise a health worry, take it to your health visitor or doctor. The stars describe the heart here, not the body.

What the family brings

With both lights in water, a double Pisces child relies on the rest of the chart, and on the people around them, for fire, earth and air. Every family member adds something to the mix, and some add exactly what this child is missing.

A fire parent or sibling

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius bring direction, energy and a clear “let’s go.” For a child who drifts, a fire sibling can be a bright point to follow: into the park, into the game, out of the daydream and into the day. A Sagittarius parent shares Jupiter as ruler with Pisces, and the two can be wonderfully big-hearted together, full of stories and plans.

The risk is speed and noise. Aries in particular moves faster than a double Pisces child can follow, and loud voices land hard. And a Sagittarius parent, who also dislikes limits, may need to work on purpose at the edges this child needs.

An earth parent or sibling

The earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, bring order you can see: the shoes in the same place, the same tea time, the clear plan for tomorrow. This is often the strongest balance for a double Pisces child, because earth gives water banks to run between. Virgo is the opposite sign to Pisces, and a Virgo parent brings the order, the list and the gentle “first this, then that” which this child cannot yet make for themselves.

The risk is that earth’s correctness wilts them. A sharp comment about the lost glove, the messy drawing or the daydreaming can sink a double Pisces child for an afternoon. Keep the structure, and lose the criticism.

An air parent or sibling

The air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, bring talk, ideas and a cooler step back from the feeling. Air can help a double Pisces child name what they feel, which is the first step to sorting it. A Libra parent’s gentle manner is easy for this child to be near.

The risk is that air answers a feeling with an explanation. “There’s no reason to be sad” makes sense to air and means nothing to this child. Gemini is mutable too, and a Gemini parent with a double Pisces child can find the house drifting from one thing to the next with nobody holding the plan.

A water parent or sibling

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces understand this child at once. A Cancer parent brings a strong, warm home and the rituals that hold it together. A Scorpio parent brings depth and fierce protection. A Pisces parent brings complete understanding and a house full of imagination. The Pisces parent page describes two Pisces under one roof as beautiful and completely unbounded, and the same is true with a double Pisces child: someone has to build the edges on purpose.

The risk with water is that everyone soaks up everyone, and the house’s mood goes round and round. Somebody needs to be the one who lowers the volume, names the feeling and closes the day. For every parent sign with a Pisces child, start at the parents hub.

The rising sign changes the doorway

The rising sign is the sign that was coming up in the east at the very minute your child was born. It shapes their first approach to a new place or a new person, and you need the birth time to know it. For a double Pisces child, it can give the soft centre a very different front door. Our guide to the rising sign in children goes through all twelve.

Fire rising. With Aries, Leo or Sagittarius on the horizon, a double Pisces child enters bright and eager. They run in, join in and look for the fun. People may not believe how sensitive this child is. But the soaking up still happens, and the tiredness still arrives later. A fire rising child may need the quiet hour as much as any double Pisces, and be less likely to ask for it.

Earth rising. When Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn is rising, the softness gets a frame. This child walks in calmly, finds a place and holds it. Earth on the doorway is a real help to doubled water, because it gives the child something firm to stand on in new rooms. With Virgo rising, the opposite sign is on the doorway, and this child can look surprisingly neat and careful for a Pisces.

Air rising. Under Gemini, Libra or Aquarius rising, the entrance is friendly and chatty, full of questions and hellos. This child mixes easily. They also pick up the mood of everyone they chat with, so a social, busy day can empty them faster than it seems from outside.

Water rising. A Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces ascendant pours yet more water into the doorway. This child comes in slowly, stays near you and takes a long time to read the room. With Pisces rising as well, the Sun, the Moon and the doorway all sit in the same open sign, and this child needs the most gentle arrivals of all.

Three things to do this week

Put a quiet half hour after every busy thing. After the party, the swim, the shopping trip: thirty minutes of low light, soft sound and nothing asked of them. It will feel like doing less. For a double Pisces child, it is often the difference between a happy evening and a lost one. Our guide to open-ended afternoons by sign has gentle ideas for that time.

Play “whose feeling is it?” At a calm moment, when nothing is wrong, wonder out loud with them. “I think the man in the shop was grumpy. Did you feel a bit grumpy too, after?” No lesson, no pressure, just noticing. Little by little, this child learns that some feelings belong to other people and can be put down. If you are looking for a gift that helps, something for water play, music or quiet stories suits this child beautifully, and our guide to Pisces baby gifts has more.

Tell them about the night they were born. Tell them that the Moon was new and dark, just beginning, and that the Sun was in the very last sign of the circle. Tell them they arrived where the end meets the start. A double Pisces child will take that story into their imagination and keep it there. If you are still expecting, our list of Pisces baby names gathers names with the softness and depth of this sign.

The other water signs in double form are read on the double Cancer and double Scorpio pages, and the whole set of twelve lives on the double signs page.
